For a 2D platformer built around discrete directions, start with the keyboard or a controller’s D-pad, then place jump, dash, grab, and other frequent actions where you can press them while steering. Check the game’s own rebinding menu and Steam’s recommended controller layout before adding custom mappings. There is no universally best device, button map, or deadzone setting: keep what already works, change one thing at a time, and retry the same difficult passage.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Checked
Keyboard: arrows or WASD Players who prefer separate directional keys Keep movement and frequent actions reachable at the same time Nov 2026
Controller D-pad Discrete directional movement Digital directional input; action access depends on button positions Nov 2026
Steam Input Gamepad template Players configuring a controller for a platformer Valve identifies the template as suitable for platformers Nov 2026
Controller analog stick Players who prefer a stick or need analog movement Continuous physical movement; mapped behavior depends on the game and configuration Nov 2026

This is a practical starting order, not a measured ranking. Comfort, the game’s control options, and whether you can reliably combine movement with actions matter more than choosing a device by reputation.

What makes a control setup work in a difficult platformer?

A useful setup lets you make the intended directional input and trigger a frequent action without an awkward hand shift. In a demanding section, you may need to keep a direction held while jumping, dashing, or grabbing; a layout that makes those combinations comfortable is usually a better starting point than one with an elaborate mapping scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate two questions when adjusting controls:

  • Can you enter the direction you intend? Unexpected diagonals, missed direction changes, or movement that does not match your input can point to the directional control or its mapping.
  • Can you reach the action while steering? If movement works but a jump, dash, or grab is difficult to trigger at the right time, the button location or the game’s action options may be the more direct issue.

These are diagnostic prompts, not proof that a particular device or setting is at fault. Repeat the same section after each change so you can tell whether that one adjustment helped.

Should you use a keyboard, a D-pad, or an analog stick?

For movement that is mainly up, down, left, and right, the keyboard and D-pad are natural baselines because they provide separate directional inputs; Valve describes the D-pad as digital, with an on/off signal for each direction. A stick can still suit a game mechanic or a player’s preference, but there is no sourced universal accuracy or latency advantage for any of these options.

Input Direction entry What to assess in play
Keyboard Separate keys for directions Whether the chosen keys and action keys can be pressed together comfortably
D-pad Digital directional input Whether you can change direction cleanly, avoid unintended diagonals, and reach action buttons comfortably
Analog stick Continuous physical movement interpreted by the game and mapping Whether it fits the game’s movement and your preference; review mapping or deadzone only when a problem appears

Compare them in the same short passage, not by switching devices and settings all at once. Notice whether a direction is missed or entered unintentionally, whether a held direction can accompany an action, and whether your thumb or hands remain comfortable. A D-pad is a sensible first check for discrete movement; it is not a rule that every player or game should follow.

How should you arrange keyboard controls?

Begin with a familiar arrangement that lets you combine movement and actions. Two reasonable starting layouts are arrow keys for movement with nearby, separate keys for jump, dash, and grab, or WASD for movement with jump on Space and dash or grab on keys the other hand can reach without stretching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting layout: arrow keys

  • Use the arrow keys for movement.
  • Put jump, dash, and grab on separate nearby keys that your other hand can reach.
  • Try holding a direction while pressing each frequent action; move an action if the combination feels awkward.

Starting layout: WASD

  • Use WASD for movement and Space for jump.
  • Place dash and grab where the other hand can reach them without stretching.
  • Check the same direction-plus-action combinations before settling on the layout.

These are starting points, not required bindings. If you already have a familiar arrangement that works, preserving it is preferable to changing it just to match an example. The useful test is whether the keys are reachable together during the actions the game asks you to perform.

Do not assume a different keyboard switch type, polling rate, or rollover specification will fix a difficult section. The supplied evidence does not establish any of those as a universal solution. First establish whether the problem is a key location, a game-specific action, or a directional-input issue.

What should you check on a controller?

Keep movement and frequent actions accessible together. If the game’s default arrangement makes jump or dash uncomfortable while steering, inspect its rebinding options before trying an external remap. If holding an action such as grab strains your hand, check whether the game offers a toggle.

Compare the D-pad and stick in the same section

With a D-pad, check whether you can enter and change directions as intended, and whether unintended diagonals are a concern for your control style. With a stick, check the same direction changes and whether its continuous movement suits the game. In both cases, also judge comfort and whether your thumb can steer while you press jump, dash, or another frequent action. Neither choice is established as objectively superior.

Consider button access, not just the directional control

Controller action access depends on where the face, shoulder, and optional back buttons sit. A controller with back buttons gives you another place for a frequent action, but the location is useful only if it is comfortable to press while steering. For example, 8BitDo documents a D-pad and two back buttons on its Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad and Pro 2 Wired Controller. Those specifications make the models relevant examples, not evidence of a measured accuracy or latency benefit.

The Pro 2 Bluetooth model is documented for Bluetooth and USB use and for Windows and Steam compatibility; the wired model connects by USB. 8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page lists firmware v3.06 or above for the Pro 2 Bluetooth model and v2.06 or above for the SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad. Check the exact model and current compatibility details before relying on a particular configuration; these product specifications do not establish that one controller will improve a player’s performance.

How do you configure Steam Input without making controls harder to diagnose?

Inspect the game’s recommended controller layout first. If it does not fit, check templates or community layouts, then make a personal copy or edit for that game. Valve describes Steam Input as supporting native in-game actions as well as legacy mappings that imitate keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input, so the choice of binding type can affect how the game interprets a control.

  1. Connect the controller and open the game’s controller configuration. Menu names can vary, so look for the configuration associated with that game and controller.
  2. Inspect the recommended layout. Valve identifies its Gamepad emulation template as suitable for platformers, making it the documented baseline to examine.
  3. If needed, inspect templates or community layouts. Choose one only if its actions fit the game and the way you want to play; make a personal copy or edit rather than changing multiple settings without a clear purpose.
  4. Prefer native action bindings when available. Use the game’s action names where the configuration offers them. Legacy mappings can be useful, but they imitate keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input rather than necessarily invoking the game’s native action directly.
  5. Keep input types coherent. Legacy layouts that mix mouse and gamepad input can cause problems in some games, and legacy mapping can lead to prompts that do not match the physical controller. If behavior or prompts become confusing, check for a mixed-input mapping and return to a simpler layout.
  6. Change one control at a time and retry the same passage. This keeps the result interpretable: if the movement or action changes unexpectedly, you know which adjustment to inspect first.

Which Steam Input press types should you use?

Start frequent actions such as jump and dash with Regular Press. Steam Input offers other behaviors, but they change when or how the input fires; add one only to solve a specific need, then verify it in the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Behavior What it changes When to be cautious
Regular Press A straightforward press-and-release action Use as the baseline before adding timing behavior
Long Press Changes activation based on holding the input It can defer or alter an action you expect to trigger with a normal press
Double Press Changes activation based on a second press It can change the timing of an action that needs to happen promptly
Chord Associates an action with a button combination It adds a combination to remember and may compete with another action
Toggle Changes whether an action stays active or switches state Confirm that the game and action behave as expected when the state changes
Turbo Sends repeated activations Repeated input is not the same as a single deliberate press

Mode Shifting can temporarily change an input’s behavior while another button is held. It can solve a specific mapping need, but adds complexity; avoid using it merely because the option exists. A simpler mapping is easier to understand when diagnosing an unexpected jump, dash, or direction.

When should you adjust a deadzone or translate a stick to a D-pad?

Do not begin with a universal deadzone percentage: none is established here. If you are translating analog-stick input into digital directions, inspect Steam Input’s D-pad layout choices and adjust the center deadzone only when you observe missed or unintended input.

A deadzone changes how input near the stick’s center is treated. That makes adjustment a response to a specific observed problem, not a general performance upgrade. Record what is going wrong, change the setting modestly, and retry the same passage; if the symptom persists or a new one appears, reconsider the mapping rather than assuming a particular number is correct for every controller and game.

Where practical, keep a physical D-pad mapped as a D-pad. If you do use an analog stick translated into digital directions, check both the D-pad layout option and the center behavior. The appropriate result depends on the actual controller, game, and mapping; the available evidence does not provide a universal numerical setting.

Can the game’s own rebinding options solve the problem?

Yes. Check the game’s controls before building a more complicated Steam Input layout: a game may expose an action or directional distinction that an external mapping does not address as directly. Celeste v1.4.0.0 is a verified example of that approach.

Its official changelog records granular control rebinding, separate directional bindings for movement and dashing, an Advanced: Crouch Dash bind, and Grab Mode as a toggle option. Those options illustrate why the in-game menu can be more useful than a broad remap when the issue concerns a particular action or the difference between movement and dash direction.

The same changelog says the old hard-coded gamepad Quick Restart shortcut was removed because it could conflict with custom rebinds. The named options are specific to Celeste v1.4.0.0; check the installed version and its current menu before expecting the labels or availability to match. Do not assume another platformer exposes the same controls.

How should you troubleshoot a failed layout change?

Use the symptom to choose what to inspect next, and avoid changing several controls at once. A short repeatable passage makes it easier to tell whether a change addressed the problem.

What you notice What to inspect next
The game shows prompts that do not match your controller Check whether a legacy mapping is imitating a different input type or whether the layout mixes mouse and gamepad input.
A direction is missed or entered unintentionally with a mapped stick Review the D-pad layout and center deadzone; change the deadzone only in response to the observed behavior.
Jump or dash is hard to trigger while steering Check button access and begin with Regular Press before adding timing behaviors.
A held action is uncomfortable Look for an in-game toggle, as Celeste’s documented Grab Mode option demonstrates.
A custom layout creates new confusion Return to the recommended layout or a simpler personal copy, then reintroduce only the change that addresses a specific problem.

How we picked these starting points

The recommendations follow documented input behavior and game options, not comparative performance testing. The order favors simple directional input and the lowest-complexity configuration first: a familiar keyboard arrangement or D-pad, the game’s own rebinding menu, then Steam’s recommended Gamepad template and a targeted personal edit if needed. The analog stick remains a valid preference or game-specific choice, but no universal device advantage, deadzone number, or button map is established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Steam Input layout always change the buttons a game displays?

Not necessarily. A legacy mapping can make the game receive a keyboard, mouse, or gamepad-style input, so the displayed prompt may reflect that input rather than the controller in your hands.

Should I use a community layout if the recommended one is available?

Only if it addresses a specific mismatch in the game’s recommended configuration. Community layouts are alternatives, not evidence that a more complicated mapping will make a passage easier.

Does a controller with back buttons make platforming more precise?

The documented benefit here is an additional button location for a frequent action, not measured precision. Whether that placement helps depends on whether it is comfortable for you to press while steering.
