China’s “artificial sun,” EAST, set a record on January 20, 2025, by sustaining high-confinement plasma for 1,066 seconds. That is a significant fusion-research milestone—not a demonstration of electricity generation or an operating power plant. Later work on plasma density at EAST and a separate divertor prototype at CRAFT add important progress, but neither establishes that commercial fusion power is ready.
What is China’s artificial sun?
“Artificial sun” is a nickname for EAST, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. A tokamak is a doughnut-shaped device that uses magnetic fields to confine extremely hot plasma—the ionized gas in which fusion reactions can occur. EAST is an experimental research facility, not a miniature sun and not a power station.
Fusion aims to release energy by joining light atomic nuclei. Achieving useful power requires more than producing hot plasma: researchers must also confine and control it reliably and sustain the conditions needed for fusion. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) says fusion power generation requires temperatures above 100 million degrees Celsius, stable long-term operation and controllability. CAS’s account of EAST’s 2025 record describes the experiment as a step toward fusion power generation.
What did EAST’s 1,066-second record demonstrate?
On January 20, 2025, EAST sustained steady-state, high-confinement plasma for 1,066 seconds, according to CAS. The institute reported that the device’s previous record was 403 seconds, set in 2023. The result extended the duration of this kind of plasma operation; it did not mean EAST produced electricity for 1,066 seconds.

Long-duration operation matters because a future fusion plant would need plasma conditions that remain stable and efficient over extended periods. CAS director Song Yuntao explained the gap between a research milestone and that goal: “A fusion device must achieve stable operation at high efficiency for thousands of seconds to enable the self-sustaining circulation of plasma, which is critical for the continuous power generation of future fusion plants,”
The 1,066-second result is therefore evidence of progress on sustained plasma operation, not proof that EAST met the thousands-of-seconds requirement Song described. Nor does the reported duration by itself establish net energy production, electricity supplied to a grid or commercial viability.

What changed in EAST’s later density-limit research?
In a report published January 4, 2026, CAS said EAST experiments exceeded a previously recognized plasma-density limit and accessed what the researchers call a “density-free zone.” In magnetic-confinement fusion, plasma density matters because it affects device performance. Exceeding a historic limit had been associated with instability and plasma escaping confinement; the reported work describes experimental control into a new operating regime, supported by a theoretical model.
CAS said the findings were published in Science Advances and involved collaboration with Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Aix-Marseille University, among others. The result provides a physical basis for high-density operation in magnetic-confinement devices. It is a plasma-physics advance, not evidence of ignition, electricity generation or a commercial reactor timeline. CAS’s January 2026 report describes the findings and their significance.

How is CRAFT’s divertor prototype different?
CRAFT, the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology, is a separate Chinese fusion-engineering platform—not another name for EAST. In October 2025, CAS reported that a CRAFT divertor prototype passed expert review and acceptance procedures. A divertor is a subsystem designed to handle heat and particles leaving the plasma, making it an important engineering challenge for a future fusion device.
CAS reported that the prototype demonstrated a steady-state thermal load of 20 megawatts per square meter. It also said the integrated coating could theoretically raise the tritium breeding ratio by more than 3 percent. That percentage is a theoretical potential attributed to the coating design, not a measured improvement in an operating plant. CAS identifies the divertor as one of CRAFT’s 19 key subsystems; prototype acceptance is a component-development milestone, not completion of a fusion power reactor. CAS’s October 2025 account gives the details.

How do the milestones compare?
| Development | What was demonstrated | What it advances | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| EAST, January 2025 | 1,066 seconds of steady-state, high-confinement plasma operation; the prior EAST record was 403 seconds in 2023 (CAS). | Research into sustaining high-confinement plasma for longer periods. | Electricity generation, net energy production or a commercial power plant. |
| EAST, reported January 2026 | Experimental access to a “density-free zone” beyond a previously recognized plasma-density limit (CAS). | Understanding and control of high-density plasma in magnetic-confinement devices. | Ignition, net electricity, commercial viability or a plant schedule. |
| CRAFT divertor prototype, October 2025 | Prototype acceptance and a reported steady-state thermal load of 20 megawatts per square meter (CAS). | Engineering readiness of a divertor component; a coating’s potential breeding-ratio benefit remains theoretical. | A completed power reactor or a demonstrated plant-level increase in tritium breeding. |
Does this mean unlimited clean energy is near?
No. “Unlimited clean energy” describes the ambition often associated with fusion, not an outcome established by these milestones. EAST’s record addresses plasma duration; its later density-limit work addresses plasma behavior; and CRAFT’s prototype addresses component engineering. Each tackles a different challenge, but none alone shows that a fusion plant can produce continuous electricity economically.
The practical significance is incremental but real: longer stable plasma operation, a new reported route to high-density plasma conditions and testing of a heat-facing component all contribute to the broader engineering and physics problem. The distance between those advances and a power station remains substantial, and the sources cited here do not establish when a commercial fusion plant will operate.
