Chess Titans is not included with Windows 10. Microsoft bundled it with several Windows Vista and Windows 7 editions, but removed it from later Windows releases. Microsoft does not provide a current official Chess Titans installer for Windows 10, and there is no verified Microsoft Store installation path.
You can still play it on Windows 10, but the available methods are unofficial: recover the game from a properly licensed Windows 7 installation, or use a third-party Windows 7 Games package. The second option is easier, but it requires careful security checks because the installer is not published or supported by Microsoft.
Is Chess Titans available for Windows 10?
No. Chess Titans was included with Windows Vista and Windows 7 editions such as Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. It was removed from later Windows versions, including Windows 10.
It is not included in Windows 10 installation media, optional Windows Features, or a current Microsoft-supported download. Be cautious with pages claiming to offer an “official Microsoft Chess Titans download.” Microsoft does not currently publish one.

Can you install Chess Titans from the Microsoft Store?
There is no verified current Microsoft Store installation path for Chess Titans. A Microsoft Q&A thread has included a claimed Store link, but its product ID is truncated and users reported that selecting Get did not install anything. The response came from an independent advisor rather than a Microsoft product announcement.
Do not confuse a Store troubleshooting procedure with a Chess Titans download. For example, Microsoft recommends wsreset.exe when the Store itself is not working. That command resets Store data; it does not install Chess Titans.
Ways to play Chess Titans on Windows 10
| Method | Availability | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Recover it from your own Windows 7 installation | Possible if you have a licensed Windows 7 computer or installation | Not a Microsoft-supported Windows 10 installation method |
| Use a third-party Windows 7 Games package | Reported to work | Unofficial; installer safety and compatibility vary |
| Microsoft Store | No verified current route | Do not rely on old or incomplete Store links |
Method 1: Recover Chess Titans from a licensed Windows 7 installation
If you still own a Windows 7 computer or installation containing Chess Titans, recovering your own files is safer than downloading an unknown executable. This does not turn the game into an officially supported Windows 10 application, and you should not use files obtained from someone else’s installation without checking the applicable license.
The practical details vary depending on the Windows 7 edition, installation architecture, and how the files are recovered. Avoid manually scattering copied files into Windows system folders. Chess Titans may depend on the original package’s shortcuts, registry entries, and supporting files, so a simple copy-and-paste often produces an incomplete installation.

Various community packages bundle the classic Windows games for newer Windows versions. Their names are not standardized. A file may have a name similar to Windows7Games_for_Windows10.exe, while another package may use an entirely different setup filename. These packages are third-party, even when a guide calls one “official.” Microsoft does not publish a Windows 10 Chess Titans package.

Before running an unofficial installer
- Download only from a source you have independently assessed. Avoid shortened links, aggressive download buttons, and pages that provide a cracked or modified Windows installer.
- Scan the file with Windows Security or another reputable security product.
- Check the file’s digital signature and reputation where possible. An installer without a Microsoft signature is not automatically malware, but it is not Microsoft software.
- Create a restore point or backup before installation.
- Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force an unknown installer to run.
Reported installation steps
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- If Windows SmartScreen appears, stop and assess the file before proceeding. Some guides describe selecting More info and then Run anyway, but those buttons only bypass the warning; they do not prove that the installer is safe.
- Choose the setup language if prompted, then select Next.
- When the game-selection screen appears, clear every title except Chess Titans if you want to install only the chess game.
- Leave the default installation directory unchanged unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Select Install and allow setup to finish.
The exact screens differ between repackaged installers. A successful setup usually adds Chess Titans to the Start menu, sometimes inside a folder named Games.
How to start Chess Titans
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Chess Titans.
- Select the matching Chess Titans result.
If the package created a classic games folder, open Start and look under Games. Do not move the executable manually after installation; doing so can break shortcuts or registry references created by setup.
Fix Chess Titans if it closes immediately
Some unofficial packages launch and then close because of compatibility problems. Try Windows 7 compatibility mode:
- Right-click the Chess Titans shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
- Choose Windows 7.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game again.
This is a community workaround, not a Microsoft-documented Chess Titans fix for Windows 10.
Fix a missing Start-menu shortcut
If setup finishes but Chess Titans does not appear in Start, the installation may have been incomplete. Common reported causes include running setup without administrator privileges or security software interrupting the installer.

- Restart Windows.
- Check Windows Security’s protection history for a blocked or quarantined installer component.
- Do not restore a suspicious file simply because the game needs it. Verify the installer’s source first.
- Run the original installer again with Run as administrator.
- Allow the setup to complete without moving its files manually.
If Microsoft Store troubleshooting is the problem
These steps are relevant only if you are troubleshooting Microsoft Store behavior—not installing Chess Titans.
Reset the Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter wsreset.exe.
- Select OK.
A blank Command Prompt window normally appears, closes after about ten seconds, and then Microsoft Store opens. Search the Store again afterward, but do not expect this reset to make Chess Titans appear.
Re-register Microsoft Store with PowerShell
If Store registration itself is damaged, Microsoft Q&A guidance has used this PowerShell command:
Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
Run it in PowerShell, not ordinary Command Prompt. At a prompt such as C:\Users\Name>, the command can produce an error saying that Get-AppXPackage is not recognized. Re-registering the Store still does not establish that Chess Titans is listed or installable.

Chess Titans features you will get

Mouse and keyboard controls are supported, along with compatible Windows gamepads.

Unofficial game packages can contain modified executables, adware, browser hijackers, or missing components. A SmartScreen or antivirus warning should not be treated as an inconvenience to bypass. If a download demands that you disable security protection, install unrelated browser software, or run several unknown “fix” tools, cancel the installation.
Also avoid claims that Microsoft officially replaced Chess Titans with a product named “Microsoft Chess.” Chess alternatives may exist in the Store, but the available evidence does not establish that wording as an official Microsoft replacement product.
