Check Point announced Zafrir’s appointment on July 24, 2024, saying he would take over in December. The handover became effective on December 16, 2024, when the company announced that Zafrir was CEO and Shwed was Executive Chairman. Check Point’s July 24 announcement set out the plan; its December 16 announcement confirmed the change.
Who is Nadav Zafrir?
Before joining Check Point as CEO, Zafrir was a co-founder and managing partner of Team8, a cybersecurity-focused venture creation and investment group. Check Point’s appointment announcement also said he established the Israel Defense Forces’ Cyber Command, commanded Unit 8200, and retired from military service as a brigadier general. What changed for Gil Shwed?
Shwed moved from CEO to Executive Chairman of Check Point’s board. He founded the company and had led it as CEO for decades; CRN reported that he had held the CEO role since the company launched in 1993. The company confirmed his new title in its effective-date announcement.

The announcements establish the two leaders’ titles and the handover date, but do not spell out a detailed division of day-to-day authority between the CEO and Executive Chairman. It would therefore be misleading to infer specific operating responsibilities from the titles alone.
Was this Check Point’s first CEO transition?
CRN called the succession Check Point’s “first-ever CEO transition.” That wording is CRN’s description, not a phrase used in the cited Check Point announcements. The company’s primary statements establish that founder and longtime CEO Shwed stepped into the Executive Chairman role and Zafrir became CEO.
What was happening at Check Point when the succession was announced?
In the July 24, 2024 announcement, Check Point reported $627 million in total revenue, up 7 percent year over year, for the second quarter ended June 30, 2024. That is company-reported financial context from the announcement, not evidence that revenue performance caused the leadership change or measured its effects.
