You can read free ebooks on a Kindle in three practical ways: borrow eligible titles from a public library with Libby, download public-domain books from Project Gutenberg, or find zero-price titles in your local Kindle Store. The first two routes are well documented; Kindle Store filters and listings can vary by marketplace, so check the price and terms on the individual title. You can also read Kindle books in Amazon’s free apps without owning a Kindle e-reader.

Compare the free Kindle reading options

Route What you get What you need Availability and compatibility
Libby through a public library A time-limited loan; the title returns according to the library’s loan rules A library card or other eligible library access Libby says most of its books can be read on a Kindle e-reader in the United States. The catalog, availability, and loan period depend on your library; Kindle delivery is not described as universal outside the United States.
Project Gutenberg A free ebook download or online reading; public-domain titles can be retained No library card; use the website and, for Kindle transfer, an Amazon account Project Gutenberg offers browser reading and instructions for sending EPUB3 files to Kindle. Follow its current device-specific directions.
Kindle Store listings A title listed at zero price, if available in your marketplace An Amazon account Listings and availability can vary by marketplace and over time. Check the individual book’s price and whether it is a purchase, loan, subscription offer, or promotion.
Kindle app Reading access to books associated with your Amazon account; the app itself is a reading option, not a source of free books A compatible phone, tablet, or computer and an Amazon account Amazon provides Kindle apps for multiple device types. Books can sync with Kindle devices and apps signed into the same account.

Borrow free ebooks from your library with Libby

Libby is a free app for borrowing ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines from participating public libraries. It is the most useful route when you want current titles without buying them, but borrowing is not the same as keeping a download: library selection, availability, and loan periods apply.

Send an eligible Libby loan to a Kindle

  1. Install Libby and sign in with your participating library card or other library-approved access.
  2. Borrow an available ebook from your library’s catalog.
  3. In Libby, open Shelf → Loans, choose the book, and select Read With → Kindle.
  4. Complete the Amazon handoff by selecting Get Library Book. The loan should then appear on Kindle devices associated with that Amazon account.

Libby says most of its books can be read on a Kindle e-reader in the United States, not that every title can be sent to every Kindle. If the Kindle option is absent, the title or your region may not support Kindle delivery. Check the loan details in Libby, and ask your library which ebook service and compatible reading options it offers.

Download public-domain books from Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg offers more than 75,000 free ebooks, with online reading and downloadable formats. Its catalog is a strong choice for public-domain classics; it is not a way to borrow newly published books from a library.

To read on a Kindle, follow Project Gutenberg’s current Kindle instructions: download the EPUB3 file and upload it through the Send to Kindle page for your Amazon marketplace. Project Gutenberg’s guidance distinguishes newer and older Kindle devices, so use its steps for your particular device rather than assuming every format transfers or displays identically. You can also read supported books in your browser without sending a file to Kindle.

Find no-cost titles in the Kindle Store

Amazon describes browsing the Kindle Store on a Kindle and downloading books into your Kindle library. However, the exact current steps for filtering specifically to books priced at zero are not established here, and store listings vary across Amazon marketplaces. Search or browse your local Kindle Store, then verify the title’s displayed price and offer terms before selecting it.

Do not treat every offer labelled free as a permanent, retained ebook. A title may be a limited-time promotion, a library-style loan, or an offer tied to a subscription. Kindle Unlimited, for example, is a subscription service—not a general free-book source. Check what the listing says you are getting and whether the title remains in your library after any offer ends.

Read Kindle books without buying an e-reader

A dedicated Kindle device is optional. Amazon offers Kindle apps for phones, tablets, and computers, so you can read Kindle books on a compatible device after signing in with your Amazon account. The app gives you a way to read account-linked Kindle books; it does not make paid titles free.

Amazon says Kindle books sync across Kindle devices and apps signed into the same account. On a Kindle, open Home and then Library to find your books. If a title is missing, connect to Wi-Fi and sync the device, then confirm that it is registered to the Amazon account used to get the book.
