Choose the workflow that puts AI beside the material you actually write from. Use ChatGPT for Word when you want a sidebar to work with the open document, ChatGPT Work when you want it to create or edit a connected Google Doc, and Notion when your source material already lives in its pages and databases. Google also offers Gemini inside Docs, while eligible Microsoft 365 users can use Copilot in Word. These are different workflows, not interchangeable versions of the same feature.
How the workflows differ
The main distinction is where the writing happens and what material the assistant can draw on. ChatGPT for Word works in a Word sidebar with the open document. ChatGPT Work can act on a connected Google Doc when the account and settings permit it. ChatGPT’s Notion integration is centered on searching and referencing connected Notion content. Gemini and Copilot are separate tools built into their respective editors.

ChatGPT in Microsoft Word
OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Word opens in a sidebar inside Word. You can ask it to draft from notes or source text, summarize the open document, revise selected text for a particular audience, reorganize sections, adjust headings and formatting, or flag unclear language and inconsistent terminology.

Access and usage
OpenAI says the add-in is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, but a Microsoft 365 administrator must allow it in a managed organization. The help page describes Word usage as token-based pricing at the API rates for the model used; plan limits and usage allowances also apply. The add-in’s chats are separate from ChatGPT conversation history, and ChatGPT memory and skills do not carry over.
Limits to plan for
- It works with the open document but cannot automatically consult other local files.
- Complex formatting, tables, and charts may need manual adjustment.
- OpenAI cautions that generated changes can be mistaken or unintended. Check facts, figures, citations, and edits, and save a copy before making substantial changes.
ChatGPT and Gemini in Google Docs
Create or edit a native Google Doc with ChatGPT Work
OpenAI documents a ChatGPT Work workflow for creating or editing native Google Docs. Connect the relevant Google Workspace app, ask ChatGPT Work to create or edit a document, choose the account or file if prompted, approve the requested action, then review the result in Workspace.

Whether this is available depends on the plan, Workspace settings, file type, and product surface. Administrators control which apps and actions are available, and you need access to any linked files. Creating a template does not alter the original linked Google file.
Use Gemini’s tools inside Docs
Google’s April 22, 2026 announcement describes “Help me create” for formatted first drafts and “Help me write” for editing text in a document. Google says Workspace Intelligence can draw on Drive, Gmail, Chat, and the web for context. That is Google’s description of its product; the announcement does not establish that every capability is available to every account, or that Gemini and ChatGPT Work have identical access or behavior.

ChatGPT with Notion
The OpenAI Notion integration page describes using connected Notion content to search and reference pages, find decisions and specifications, draft meeting notes, FAQs, and status updates, and update pages and database properties as work changes.
This workflow is most relevant when the useful context is already maintained in Notion rather than gathered in an individual document. What ChatGPT can access depends on the connected account and its permissions; the integration’s described use cases do not establish a quality comparison with Docs or Word.

Copilot in Microsoft Word
Microsoft’s Copilot in Word can draft from a prompt, outline, notes, or referenced file; rewrite selected text; summarize a document or answer questions about it; and, where available, use files, email, and meetings for context. Microsoft’s separate Edit with Copilot in Word page describes in-place creation, editing, refinement, and formatting, and says that rollout is for users with a Premium Copilot license.
An eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Copilot license is required, and organization settings can affect availability. Check the eligibility and features for your own account before choosing Copilot on the assumption that it is included.

Which workflow should you choose?
- Choose ChatGPT for Word if you prefer Word and want a sidebar to work with the open document. Keep a review step for factual edits and formatting.
- Choose ChatGPT Work with Google Docs if you want ChatGPT to create or edit a native Google document and your account, connected app, and Workspace settings allow the action.
- Choose Gemini in Docs if you want Google’s documented draft and editing tools within Docs; verify that the features described are available to your account.
- Choose ChatGPT with Notion if decisions, specifications, and other source context are organized in Notion pages or project databases you can connect.
- Choose Copilot in Word if you want Word’s own AI workflow and have the required license and organization access.
