Install it from the Visual Studio Marketplace, open its Codex panel, sign in with a supported ChatGPT authentication method, and give it a small, reviewable task. Codex can use the file you have open and code you select, propose edits, and show a diff before you accept anything. Larger jobs can be delegated to Codex Cloud and brought back into your local workspace for review.
What “ChatGPT in VS Code” means now
OpenAI’s in-editor product is named OpenAI Codex, not “ChatGPT Coding” or another similarly named community extension. OpenAI describes Codex as an AI agent that helps write, review and ship code. The official Marketplace listing describes a panel where you can chat, edit files and preview changes, with an option to delegate larger jobs to Codex Cloud.
Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, but usage limits vary by plan. Your editor must be VS Code or a supported VS Code-compatible fork, and the client must offer a supported sign-in path. Availability, entitlements and authentication choices can change, so follow the options shown by the installed client rather than relying on an old tutorial.
Before you install
Use a compatible editor
Install a current desktop build of Visual Studio Code, or use a compatible fork supported by OpenAI. OpenAI’s repository identifies VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf as editor targets. A browser chat tab alone cannot inspect your local files or apply a local diff.

Open a real project folder
Open the repository or project directory in VS Code, not just an individual file. If VS Code asks whether you trust the folder, choose the option appropriate for code you obtained and understand. Do not grant an agent access to an untrusted repository merely to test the extension.
Have an authentication method ready
The normal first-run flow asks you to sign in with ChatGPT. If your client offers API-key authentication, use the current instructions shown by the client; OpenAI’s repository notes that API-key use requires additional setup. A ChatGPT subscription and API billing are different account paths, so do not assume an API key is required for the standard ChatGPT sign-in.
Install and sign in
- Open VS Code and select the Extensions view from the Activity Bar, or use the Extensions command in the Command Palette.
- Search for OpenAI Codex. Verify that the publisher and listing are the official OpenAI entry before installing; similarly named extensions are not the product described here.
- Select Install, then reload VS Code if the client requests it.
- Open the new Codex icon or panel. Select the sign-in action and complete the browser or in-client steps.
- Return to VS Code and wait for the panel to show that the session is ready. If the panel shows a different authentication option, follow that client-specific setup rather than pasting credentials into a chat prompt.
OpenAI also documents an experimental VS Code Agent Host Codex route that can be enabled in settings. In a given window, only one Codex implementation appears when that preference replaces the extension target. If you enable the experimental route and the normal panel disappears, check the Agent Host preference and disable it to return to the extension implementation.

- “Explain this function and identify one edge case it does not handle.”
- “Add a unit test for the selected method, following the existing test style. Do not change production code.”
- “Suggest a minimal fix for this error and show the files you would change before editing.”
- Open the file containing the relevant function.
- Select the smallest code region that defines the question. A method, failing branch or configuration block is usually better than an entire repository.
- Describe the outcome, constraints and validation command. For example: “Add a test for the selected parser method. Use the existing test framework, do not add dependencies, and run the parser test suite.”
- Ask Codex to explain its plan before making a multi-file change.
- Read the response, inspect the proposed diff and reject unrelated edits.
- Run the project’s formatter, linter and tests yourself. Accept the change only after those checks pass or you understand the failure.
What context Codex can use
The IDE extension can use the file you have opened and code you have selected. That context makes a short prompt more precise: selecting a method tells Codex which implementation and surrounding imports matter. It does not mean every file, secret, terminal history or external service is automatically part of every request. Tell the agent which additional files or commands are relevant, and avoid selecting credentials, private keys or tokens.
Make context deliberate
- Open the implementation and its nearest test before asking for a test change.
- Select the failing branch when requesting a minimal bug fix.
- Name the expected command, framework and compatibility target.
- For cross-file work, list the files Codex may change and ask it to explain dependencies first.
- Remove secrets from sample configuration and prompts.
Local editing versus Codex Cloud
Codex gives you two useful working surfaces. Local work keeps the agent in your open workspace, where you can see and review a diff immediately. Cloud delegation gives a larger job a managed Codex Cloud environment; you review the resulting task and hand it back to the local editor for finishing work.

Choose local mode when you need tight feedback or the task touches sensitive local state. Choose Cloud when the work is well specified, can be reviewed later and does not depend on an interactive local-only setup. In both cases, treat the generated patch as proposed code, not as proof that the implementation is correct.
Using Codex in Cursor, Windsurf and other forks
OpenAI describes the extension as working in VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks. Install the official OpenAI Codex entry through that editor’s extension marketplace or supported installation flow. Menus and trust prompts can differ from stock VS Code, and an experimental Agent Host integration may be available only in a particular editor version. If the extension cannot appear, check that the fork supports VS Code extensions, that the editor is current, and that you have not enabled a setting that replaces the extension with another Codex host.

How to review an AI-generated change
- Read the diff one file at a time. Look for edits outside the requested scope, changed defaults and removed validation.
- Check error paths, empty input, permissions and backward compatibility—not only the happy path.
- Run the repository’s documented tests, formatter and linter. If no command is documented, inspect the project scripts before choosing one.
- Exercise the changed behavior with a focused manual or integration check.
- Keep the change small enough to revert. Commit or create a separate branch before a broad refactor.
Troubleshooting
The extension is missing or a similarly named result appears
Search for the exact name OpenAI Codex and verify the official publisher. Update VS Code or your fork, then restart the editor. Marketplace availability can differ by editor build.
The panel is installed but sign-in does not complete
Finish the browser authorization and return to the same editor window. Check that your organization allows the selected authentication route. If you are using an API key, follow the client’s additional setup; do not assume ChatGPT-plan access and API access are interchangeable.
Codex changes the wrong code
Open and select the exact method or configuration block, name the allowed files, and request a plan before editing. A repository-wide prompt without file context leaves more room for an unintended interpretation.
Tests fail after accepting a patch
Read the first failing assertion and compare it with the requested behavior. Ask Codex to explain the failure without editing, then make a separate, narrow correction. Re-run the same focused test before the full suite.

The expected Codex panel disappeared
Check whether the experimental Agent Host Codex setting is enabled. That preference can replace the extension target, and only one implementation appears in a window. Disable the preference or use the host you intentionally selected.
Cloud work does not match the local project
Confirm that the delegated task received the intended repository state, setup commands and files. Reopen the result locally, inspect every change and run local checks before merging.
