Microsoft separates personal Copilot from work-and-school Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, while ChatGPT is OpenAI’s standalone chatbot with its own plans, models, projects, and memory controls.
For most people, ChatGPT is the better general-purpose AI assistant. Copilot is a stronger fit when you work in Microsoft 365, need answers grounded in company files, or want AI built into Microsoft apps. The right choice depends on where your data and daily work already live.
ChatGPT and Copilot: the short version
| Area | ChatGPT | Microsoft Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | General questions, writing, coding, analysis, brainstorming, and custom workflows | Web-assisted answers and Microsoft 365 work |
| Personal entry point | chatgpt.com or the ChatGPT app | copilot.microsoft.com, bing.com/chat, copilot.com, or copilot.ai |
| Work or school entry point | ChatGPT under your organization’s plan, if provided | Microsoft 365 Copilot, its app, Edge, Outlook, or Teams |
| Office integration | Works with uploaded files and projects | Native integration with Microsoft 365 apps and organizational content |
| Web search | Available according to the current ChatGPT experience and plan | Copilot Chat can use Bing web search when enabled |
| Consumer paid plan | ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly | Personal Copilot access varies by Microsoft account and subscription |
| Administration | Controlled by the ChatGPT workspace or account plan | Microsoft 365 administrators can control app availability, web search, retention, and policy behavior |
These are not two versions of the same service. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s product. Copilot is Microsoft’s product family, with different behavior depending on whether you sign in with a personal Microsoft account or a Microsoft Entra work or school account. Microsoft’s Copilot account and access documentation describes these distinctions.
What happened to Bing Chat?
Microsoft no longer uses Bing Chat as the current product name. The personal service is called Microsoft Copilot. You may still reach it through Bing, including bing.com/chat and bing.com/copilotsearch, but those addresses lead to Microsoft’s Copilot experience.

Microsoft also uses Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot for work and school accounts. A Microsoft Entra account uses Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Chat rather than the standalone personal Copilot app.
The Microsoft 365 app began being renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot on January 15, 2025, according to Microsoft’s app transition documentation. Its current web address is m365.cloud.microsoft; office.com and microsoft365.com redirect automatically.
ChatGPT versus personal Microsoft Copilot
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is usually the more flexible option for an individual user. Typical uses include:
- Rewriting and summarizing text in a chosen style
- Explaining technical subjects
- Writing and debugging code
- Analyzing uploaded documents and data
- Creating reusable custom workflows
- Organizing longer jobs in Projects
ChatGPT lets you choose among available models or reasoning levels, upload relevant files, create a project with its own context, and request a particular response format. It does not automatically understand your Microsoft 365 files, Outlook mailbox, Teams conversations, or company permissions unless you use an appropriate business integration and provide access.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft Copilot
Personal Microsoft Copilot is a conversational AI companion for people using personal Microsoft accounts. It is available from the Copilot website, Bing, supported Microsoft apps, and Copilot apps.
Copilot is a natural fit if you use Edge or Bing and want answers that can be grounded in current web information. However, do not assume personal Copilot has the same file and application access as Microsoft 365 Copilot. These names describe different account contexts, not merely different buttons for one chatbot.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate comparison
For work and school users, the more meaningful comparison is often ChatGPT versus Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, not ChatGPT versus personal Copilot.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is built into the Microsoft 365 environment. Depending on your license and organizational configuration, it can work alongside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, PDFs, and other Microsoft 365 content. That makes it useful for tasks such as:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Summarizing a long email thread in Outlook
- Finding decisions or action items in Teams conversations
- Drafting a Word document from existing business material
- Analyzing a workbook in Excel
- Creating or revising a PowerPoint presentation
- Answering questions about content you are permitted to access
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat may be available at no additional cost to users with a qualifying Microsoft 365 license. A separate Microsoft 365 Copilot license provides additional functionality. Availability depends on your organization’s licensing and policies.
ChatGPT can still be better for open-ended writing, coding, research planning, and tasks that do not depend on Microsoft’s permission system. Microsoft 365 Copilot is better when source material is already inside your organization’s Microsoft 365 environment.

Web search and current information
Both products can answer questions from their underlying language models, but web access is not the same as model knowledge. For current prices, software changes, travel information, news, product availability, or live events, check whether the answer actually used web sources.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat can use Bing web search to ground an answer. An administrator controls this with the Allow web search in Copilot policy in the Cloud Policy service for Microsoft 365 or through Copilot Control System settings in the Microsoft 365 admin center. If web search is disabled, Copilot Chat does not send queries to Bing; it uses only its underlying model.
GCC and DoD environments have different behavior: web search is available, but it is turned off unless the administrator configures Allow web search in Copilot, according to Microsoft’s administration guidance.
For either chatbot, treat web-grounded output as a starting point. Open cited pages, check dates, and verify important claims. A confident answer is not proof that information is current or correct.
Which has the better model experience?
There is no permanent winner based simply on model branding. Both companies change models, limits, and interfaces, and Microsoft’s model availability is not automatically the same as OpenAI’s ChatGPT availability.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes document the current model-picker labels: Instant, Medium, and High; Pro plans also have Extra High, Pro Standard, and Pro Extended. On the web, the picker appears in the message composer; on iOS and Android, it appears at the top of the conversation.
To configure automatic switching, use Model picker → Configure and look for Auto-switch to Thinking. OpenAI also documents the related control under General → Settings.
Older guides referring to Thinking – Standard, Thinking – Extended, Thinking – Heavy, or Thinking – Light are out of date. Those labels changed to Medium, High, and Extra High, while Light was removed.
Do not rely on old articles claiming GPT-4o is selectable in the normal ChatGPT picker. OpenAI’s model retirement notice says GPT-4o and several other models were retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, and GPT-5.1 variants on March 11, 2026. Some models may remain available through the API, but API availability is separate from ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly. To subscribe, open ChatGPT and choose Profile icon → Upgrade Plan → Get Plus. To manage the subscription, use Profile icon → Settings → Account.

Use the same email address or sign-in provider that you used when purchasing. Signing in with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or email and password can create or open different ChatGPT accounts. This is a common reason for being charged while still seeing the Free plan. On iOS or Android, try Settings → Restore purchases.
Plus does not include OpenAI API credits. API usage is billed separately, and Plus is not unlimited: message caps can vary with system conditions and demand, as explained in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus help page.
Copilot and Microsoft 365 subscriptions
Personal Copilot access and Copilot features inside the Microsoft 365 Copilot app depend on the account and subscription. For personal accounts, Copilot Chat inside the Microsoft 365 Copilot app requires Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium and is limited to primary account holders.
For work and school accounts, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat may be included for users with a qualifying Microsoft 365 license, while the separate Microsoft 365 Copilot license adds more functionality. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat has no API; Microsoft directs customers needing extensibility toward Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot Studio. See Microsoft’s Copilot FAQ.

Files, projects, memory, and privacy
ChatGPT Projects
Projects are available on ChatGPT Free as well as paid plans. OpenAI’s September 2025 release notes documented limits of up to five file uploads per project on Free, 25 on Plus, Go, and Edu, and 40 on Pro, Business, and Enterprise.
Projects are useful when a task spans multiple conversations. You can keep source files and related chats together instead of repeatedly explaining the same background. ChatGPT also supports a separate project-only memory setting. With it enabled, the project can use conversations within that project while excluding saved memories from outside it, and project information does not carry into future chats outside the project.
Personal Memory must be enabled first. The documented prerequisite path is Settings → Personalization → Memory.
For a one-off conversation, use Temporary Chat. Temporary Chats do not use existing memories or create new ones, and uploaded files are not saved to ChatGPT’s Library.

Microsoft 365 Copilot’s major advantage is its connection to work data under Microsoft 365 permissions. Its usefulness is therefore tied to how your organization stores files, manages access, and configures Copilot.
With Enterprise Data Protection, prompts and responses are logged, retained, and available for audit, eDiscovery, and Microsoft Purview capabilities. Microsoft says this data is not used to train foundation models and is not available to OpenAI, according to Microsoft’s Copilot FAQ. That protection is valuable for business oversight, but it also means a work Copilot conversation should not be treated like a private personal chat.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Browser and application support
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat supports Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. The Copilot side-pane experience is available only in Microsoft Edge.
In Edge, Copilot controls are located at Microsoft Edge → Settings → Appearance → Copilot and Sidebar → Copilot. There you can find options such as Show Copilot button on the toolbar and Allow Microsoft to access page content. The second setting matters if you expect Copilot to summarize or discuss the page currently open in Edge. See Microsoft’s Copilot management documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

In Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, open Chats in the left navigation, select a conversation, and choose … More. Available actions include Rename, Move to notebook, and Delete.
Microsoft 365 Copilot also has a personalization control at … Settings and more → Chat settings → Personalization → Chat history → Off.
Turning off Chat history personalization deletes inferences Copilot made from previous chats. Microsoft says the data is removed from the Copilot system after 30 days; turning the setting back on during that period prevents deletion. See Microsoft’s chat history documentation.
Organization retention and compliance policies may still apply. In a business account, deleting a visible chat does not necessarily override audit, eDiscovery, or retention requirements.

Users sometimes conclude that Copilot is broken when it has actually been restricted by an administrator.
The Pin Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat setting no longer controls visibility in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app worldwide as of January 28, 2026, outside the EEA and Switzerland. For tenants in the EEA and Switzerland, the change began July 25, 2025. Setting Copilot Chat not to pin can remove it from places such as Outlook and Teams, but users may still access it directly at m365.cloud.microsoft/chat.
To manage the Copilot app, an administrator uses Microsoft 365 admin center → Integrated Apps → Copilot. The administrator can allow installation for All users in the organization or only for Specific users/group in the organization.
Blocking Copilot through Integrated Apps is broader than unpinning it. It can block Copilot in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, Teams, Outlook, and Copilot Chat on the web, including for users who have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. A blocked user may still see Chat in the app navigation, but opening it displays a message saying Copilot Chat is unavailable because of organizational policy.

Microsoft recommends against trying to block Copilot by filtering selected domains, URLs, IP addresses, or network protocols. Because Copilot is integrated into Microsoft applications, network-level blocking can cause unpredictable failures or interfere with other application access. See Microsoft’s administration guidance.
Which chatbot is better for common tasks?
| Task | Better default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Writing a blog post or email from scratch | ChatGPT | Flexible conversational workflow and reusable project context |
| Summarizing a Word file you upload | Either | ChatGPT handles uploaded files; Copilot is more convenient when the file is already in Microsoft 365 |
| Working with a company’s SharePoint or OneDrive content | Microsoft 365 Copilot | Designed to operate within Microsoft 365 permissions and organizational context |
| Excel or PowerPoint work | Microsoft 365 Copilot | Native app integration reduces copying and pasting |
| Coding and debugging | ChatGPT | A general-purpose coding partner not tied to Microsoft 365 workflows |
| Research starting from current web pages | Copilot or ChatGPT | Choose the search and citation workflow that gives you verifiable sources |
| Outlook and Teams summaries | Microsoft 365 Copilot | It can be integrated into the applications where those conversations occur |
| A private, isolated one-off conversation | ChatGPT Temporary Chat | Temporary Chat does not use or create memories and does not save uploaded files to the Library |
How to choose
- Choose ChatGPT if you want one flexible assistant for writing, coding, analysis, brainstorming, and uploaded documents.
- Choose personal Microsoft Copilot if you prefer Microsoft’s web and Edge ecosystem and want a convenient Bing-connected assistant.
- Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot if your work happens in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive and your organization has enabled it.
- Use both if your work divides naturally: ChatGPT for drafting, reasoning, and coding; Microsoft 365 Copilot for finding and transforming material already stored in Microsoft 365.
For an organization, make the decision based on governance first. Check whether web search is enabled, what data the assistant can access, how prompts are retained, and which administrators can disable the service. For an individual, start with the tools you already use and test the same real tasks in each product rather than relying on generic benchmark claims.
FAQ

Microsoft no longer uses Bing Chat as the current product name. The personal service is Microsoft Copilot, available through copilot.microsoft.com, Bing, copilot.com, and copilot.ai.
Is Microsoft Copilot the same as ChatGPT?
No. They are separate products from Microsoft and OpenAI. Both can use OpenAI models, but their model availability, applications, account types, data access, pricing, and administrator controls are different.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which is better, ChatGPT or Copilot?
ChatGPT is generally the better standalone assistant for writing, coding, analysis, and flexible projects. Microsoft 365 Copilot is usually better for work involving Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?
No. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, but OpenAI API usage is billed separately. Plus may also impose message caps that vary with demand and system conditions.
Why was I charged for ChatGPT Plus but still see the Free plan?
You may have signed in to a different ChatGPT account using another authentication method. Google, Apple, Microsoft, and email/password sign-ins can lead to different accounts. On mobile, try Settings → Restore purchases, and confirm the account matches the one used to subscribe.
Can Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat search the web?
It can use Bing web search when the organization allows it. Administrators control this with the Allow web search in Copilot policy. If the policy is disabled, Copilot Chat uses only its underlying language model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use the standalone Copilot app with a work Microsoft account?
No. Microsoft says the standalone personal Copilot app does not work for commercial users signing in with a Microsoft Entra account. Those users should use Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Chat instead.
Does ChatGPT have projects on the Free plan?
Yes. Projects are available on ChatGPT Free. OpenAI documented up to five file uploads per project in its September 2025 release notes; paid plans support higher limits.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT is the better all-round chatbot for most individual users. It is flexible and useful for writing and coding, and supports projects, file uploads, model controls, and Temporary Chats.
Microsoft Copilot is the better choice when Microsoft 365 is the center of your work. Microsoft 365 Copilot can use the applications and organizational content your team already relies on, subject to licensing and administrator policy. Treat “Bing Chat,” personal Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, and Microsoft 365 Copilot as related but distinct services—not interchangeable names for one AI.
