ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each let consumer users limit some use of conversations for model improvement, but none of the controls described here should be read as a guarantee that no copy is retained or no safety review can occur. The practical differences are what happens to future chats, whether they remain in ordinary history, and how long the provider says temporary or off-setting chats may be kept. This comparison reflects the providers’ documentation accessed October 7, 2026; business, education, API and managed-workspace accounts can have different terms.
How the controls compare
Model improvement, visible chat history, temporary retention, human review and memory are separate questions. The table summarizes the consumer controls described by each provider; the retention periods are provider-stated limits or defaults, not independent measurements of every data copy a company may hold.

What each setting actually changes
ChatGPT: opt out without hiding regular chats
For an eligible personal account, Improve the model for everyone controls model-improvement use of new conversations; it is not a history-deletion control. Memory is separate, so review its settings independently if your concern is whether ChatGPT remembers details for later conversations. OpenAI says model training is off by default for Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API offerings, but that does not settle workspace retention or administrator access; those are governed by the relevant product and organization policies. Temporary Chat changes more than the training toggle: the chat is excluded from ordinary history and memory creation or updates, with a stated safety-retention period of up to 30 days. It is not an absolute isolation mode: personalization can still be used if chosen, and information sent through a GPT action is subject to the recipient’s policy. Claude: distinguish the consumer opt-out from incognito
Claude’s consumer model-improvement setting applies to new chats and coding sessions, but Anthropic says it cannot undo training already underway or alter models already trained. That makes it a forward-looking control, not a way to retract material already incorporated. Safety-flagged conversations remain a stated exception for trust-and-safety use. Incognito is the separate option for keeping a chat out of Claude history and memory as well as excluding it from training. It does not necessarily remove profile-based preferences from the interaction. Feedback is another exception to consider: Anthropic says a conversation linked to a rating may be retained for up to five years. Gemini: Keep Activity affects future use and Activity visibility
Keep Activity is the setting to check for future model-improvement use and whether chats appear in Gemini Activity. With it on, the default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months; Google says users can configure this to three months, 36 months or indefinite. (Google Gemini Apps Help, “Gemini Apps Privacy Hub”)
Turning Keep Activity off does not mean immediate deletion: Google says chats may remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours to respond and protect Google, users and the public. Google also says that data reviewed by service providers may be kept for up to three years and is not deleted when a user deletes Activity. Human review and feedback are separate privacy questions
Google explicitly says human reviewers may assist with service and safety purposes even for chats made with Keep Activity off or in Temporary Chat. Its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub advises: “If that setting is on, don’t enter data that’s confidential or that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve its services.” The guidance concerns Keep Activity and Google’s human-review discussion; it is not a claim that every chat is reviewed.
Feedback can also change how a conversation is handled. OpenAI warns that submitting feedback may make the associated conversation eligible for training; Anthropic describes longer retention for chats tied to ratings; Google says feedback can affect use even with Keep Activity off. Treat a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or other feedback submission as distinct from simply using the service under its ordinary setting.

Choose controls by the outcome you need
- To limit model-improvement use of future chats: review ChatGPT’s Improve the model for everyone, Claude’s model-improvement setting, or Gemini’s Keep Activity control. Check that the account is a consumer account if relying on these descriptions.
- To keep a conversation out of ordinary chat history: use ChatGPT Temporary Chat or Claude incognito; for Gemini, use Temporary Chat or turn Keep Activity off to keep future chats out of Activity. These options still have the provider-stated service, safety or retention qualifications above.
- To limit personalization or memory: inspect memory and activity controls separately from model-improvement controls. ChatGPT’s training and Memory settings are distinct; Claude incognito is not saved to Claude memory; Gemini Temporary Chat is intended not to remember or personalize from that conversation.
- Before entering sensitive information: open the service’s current privacy or data settings, check the applicable account and workspace rules, and consider whether the information needs to be sent at all. Do not assume a temporary mode prevents provider-side retention, safety handling or third-party processing.
Is one service the most private?
There is no supported overall winner without defining what matters most. A person prioritizing a short stated temporary-chat retention period may weigh Google’s up-to-72-hour window differently from the 30-day periods stated for ChatGPT Temporary Chat and Claude incognito. Someone prioritizing history separation, memory behavior, reviewer access or account-level administration may reach a different conclusion. These are different policies and scopes, not a measured privacy-effectiveness ranking.
