OpenAI’s Help Center says eligibility is determined through SheerID. Before starting, sign in to the ChatGPT account you want the offer applied to and check how any existing subscription is billed.
Who can get the offer?
The promotion is for current full-time and part-time college and graduate students enrolled at eligible degree-granting institutions in the United States. SheerID determines whether your enrollment and school qualify. Depending on the institution, it may check trusted records, ask you to sign in through your school, or request documents.
The email you use with SheerID can differ from the email on your ChatGPT account. The offer is applied to the ChatGPT account signed in during the claim flow, so confirm that it is the intended account before you begin.

How to claim four free months of ChatGPT Plus
- Open OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer page in a web browser or mobile web browser.
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you want the promotion applied.
- Follow the on-screen SheerID prompts to verify your student status. Provide school sign-in details or enrollment documents if requested.
- Return to the offer flow and complete activation. If prompted, provide a valid payment method.
- Review the offer and billing details shown before finishing. Claim the promotion by October 31, 2026.
OpenAI says the promotion applies to the account signed in during the claim flow. It cannot move the promotion to a different account after it has been applied.
Existing subscriptions and billing
New subscribers and existing monthly ChatGPT Plus subscribers billed directly by ChatGPT may qualify if they meet the student requirements. A subscription billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play cannot receive the promotion while it remains store-billed.

Canceling the promotion
If you cancel, Plus access continues through the end of the current monthly billing period. When cancellation takes effect, any promotional months still remaining are forfeited. The offer can be redeemed once, so review the cancellation terms before acting if you want to use all four free periods.

What to do if verification or activation fails
- SheerID cannot verify you: OpenAI directs students to SheerID support for help with school listings or document review.
- You verified but the offer did not apply: Confirm you are signed in to the same ChatGPT account used during verification, reopen the offer, and select “Claim free offer.”
- You used the wrong account: Check carefully before starting; OpenAI says it cannot move the promotion after it has been applied.
