There is no evidence-backed overall winner. ChatGPT Images 2.5 is a strong option for creating and iteratively editing images inside ChatGPT. Google Gemini, using Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image), is worth considering when you want Google’s advertised web-grounded image generation, rapid revisions, or in-image text translation. For understanding an image you upload, the available evidence does not establish that either service is more accurate. Choose by task, then check the result.
What are you comparing?
These tools cover two different jobs: making or editing images, and interpreting images you provide. A model can be useful for one without being the best choice for the other. This comparison is based on the providers’ official consumer-product descriptions, not an independent, controlled head-to-head test. Their capability statements are product claims, not proof of comparative accuracy.
OpenAI calls its current consumer feature ChatGPT Images; its September 8, 2026 announcement calls the release ChatGPT Images 2.5. Google identifies Nano Banana 2 as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image in its February 26, 2026 announcement. This is a comparison of the consumer app experiences described by the companies, not API model names, pricing, or developer service levels.
Which is better for creating images?
Both can generate images from prompts. ChatGPT Images includes templates and aspect-ratio controls. Nano Banana 2 is presented by Google as an image-generation model with output controls. The available sources do not establish a reliable quality ranking, so the better fit depends on whether a particular tool produces the style, layout, and details you need.

For a fair personal comparison, enter the same prompt in both products and assess the actual output against your requirements. If the task depends on a specific location, product, or current real-world detail, check those facts separately rather than treating a plausible-looking image as verification.
Which is better for editing a photo?
Both services describe editing uploaded or generated images and support follow-up changes. ChatGPT lets you describe an edit in text or select an area to change. OpenAI cautions that the selection highlight is not always precise and that the edit may affect pixels outside it. Inspect the whole image after a localized edit, not just the selected region.

Google describes multi-turn editing, blending photos, and maintaining subjects across edits. OpenAI says Images 2.5 better preserves subjects in reference photos and follows instructions more reliably across turns. These are respective company claims, not independent comparative findings. If keeping a person, pet, or object recognizable matters, use the same reference image and the same sequence of follow-up edits in each product, then compare the results yourself.
Which handles text in images better?
Google explicitly advertises text rendering and translation or localization within images for Nano Banana 2. OpenAI lists text creation among ChatGPT Images’ capabilities, while its Images 2.5 announcement emphasizes editing and sharper details. Neither description is a guarantee of error-free lettering.

For a poster, label, or graphic where exact wording matters, test the precise copy, language, and size you plan to use. Proofread every character before publishing or printing; small text and non-Latin scripts can be especially challenging for image interpretation, and generated lettering may need correction.
Which is better for current or specific real-world references?
Google says Nano Banana 2 can use Gemini’s world knowledge and real-time information and images from web search to depict specific subjects. OpenAI’s announcement describes live web-search data as available to Images 2.0 thinking mode; that is a distinct version and mode, not a blanket statement about every Images 2.5 generation.

If a visual depends on a named place, event, or time-sensitive reference, try the same request in both and independently verify any factual details. Web grounding can inform a depiction, but it does not make the generated image documentary evidence.
Which is better for understanding an image you upload?
ChatGPT supports image-input questions about photos, documents, diagrams, screenshots, and charts. OpenAI’s image-input guidance also lists concrete limitations. The Google sources reviewed here focus on creating and editing images; they do not establish a comparable current accuracy result for image understanding. That is not enough evidence to declare ChatGPT more accurate, or Gemini less capable, for visual analysis.

OpenAI says ChatGPT may be less reliable with specialized medical images; small or rotated text; text in non-Latin alphabets; graph elements distinguished by color or line style; precise spatial localization; panoramic or fisheye images; exact object counts; and image metadata. It resizes images and does not process original filenames or metadata. Treat answers about small chart labels, counts, positions, or fine details as suggestions to verify—not precise measurements. Do not rely on image interpretation as a substitute for medical judgment or other consequential expert review.

How to run a useful side-by-side test
- Choose one prompt, one reference image, and one follow-up edit request for both products.
- Include tasks relevant to your use: exact text in a graphic, a localized photo edit, preserving a subject across multiple edits, or a question about small text or a chart.
- Use the same wording and input files, and note the app, available model or mode, account tier, date, and region. Feature access and rollout can vary.
- Judge the outputs yourself. Check text character by character, inspect areas outside an edit selection, and verify factual claims separately.
Availability and what the published figures mean
OpenAI’s help page says ChatGPT Images is available on all ChatGPT tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. It describes “Images with thinking” as available on Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability coming. Because access and rollout can change, check the current app and plan details before relying on a particular feature.
Google describes Nano Banana 2 as available across Google products, including the Gemini app. Its announcement also discusses Nano Banana Pro as a separate option for eligible Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Exact access and controls may depend on product, subscription, and rollout.
OpenAI says Images 2.5 generates images with up to 50% lower latency than Images 2.0. That is OpenAI’s own comparison and does not compare it with Nano Banana 2. Google reported more than 5 billion images generated by Nano Banana as of October 13, 2025; that is a usage total, not a quality, accuracy, or speed benchmark. Neither figure establishes which service is better for your task.
