Yes—ChatGPT Free includes limited access to OpenAI’s deep research feature. It is not unlimited, and OpenAI’s current plan comparison does not state a numeric Free allowance. “Deep research” is OpenAI’s name for its multi-step research tool; it is separate from ordinary ChatGPT Search.
What OpenAI made available to Free users
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT pricing page lists Deep Research as “Limited” on the Free plan. That establishes access with a restriction, not unrestricted use. The page does not publish a numeric Free quota in the plan comparison reviewed on October 5, 2026.
OpenAI gave a specific figure in an update dated April 24, 2025: Free users received five deep research queries per month. The same announcement listed 25 queries per month for Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, and 250 for Pro users. OpenAI said those increases were enabled by a lightweight version powered by a version of o4-mini; after a user reached the full-version limit, queries would automatically switch to the lightweight version. Those are figures and behavior from that dated announcement, not confirmed current quotas. Check the current plan page or ChatGPT interface for the limits that apply to your account.
What deep research does
Deep research is designed for a question that benefits from multiple steps of online research and synthesis. OpenAI describes it as a ChatGPT capability that finds, analyzes, and combines online sources into a report. Its help documentation says the resulting reports include citations or source links, which readers can follow to verify the supporting material.
#1 Best Overall
It is distinct from ordinary ChatGPT Search. Search is a separate feature for finding current information on the web, and OpenAI says it is available across Free and paid plans subject to plan usage limits. Having Search does not mean a user has unlimited deep research access.
How to check whether you can use it
- Open ChatGPT and start a new chat. Look for Deep Research among the available tools or modes; labels and availability can vary as OpenAI updates the interface.
- Select Deep Research and enter your question. Use it for a task requiring several sources and a synthesized report, rather than a quick lookup.
- Review the completed report’s citations or source links. Open relevant sources to check details and context before relying on the answer.
- Check the in-product notice if a limit appears. Your available usage and any fallback behavior are governed by the limits currently applied to your account, which may differ from figures in an older announcement.
Why connected apps may not appear
Deep research can use connected apps only when the app supports the feature and is available to the user and workspace. Access may also depend on role, region, workspace configuration, provider permissions, and account authorization. OpenAI’s Deep Research help documentation describes these conditions; an unavailable app does not by itself mean the core web-research feature is unavailable.

The headline is accurate only with an important qualification: Free users have limited access to ChatGPT deep research, not unlimited free use. OpenAI’s April 24, 2025 announcement is the source for the five-query monthly figure, while its current pricing comparison reviewed October 5, 2026 confirms limited Free access without stating a number. Usage limits and app availability can change, so rely on the current account interface and plan information rather than treating the older quota as permanent.
