Chasing Innovation’s Dory Explore adds a joystick remote, a close-range metal detector and a small collection net to the standard Dory underwater drone. It can help an operator inspect a target and try to retrieve it, but the detector’s reported range is only about 5 cm (2 inches)—so this is not a drone that scans a wide area for buried treasure.
What the Dory Explore upgrade includes
In a report published December 30, 2024, New Atlas described the Dory Explore as a standard Dory bundled with three physical accessories: a joystick remote, metal detector and small collection net. The net clips onto the detector when needed. The joystick remote, which the report said was optional for the standard Dory, is included with Explore.
The detector can be removed by undoing screws, but New Atlas said Chasing Innovation did not officially recommend removing it. The report characterized the Explore as otherwise technically identical to the standard Dory.
How the treasure-hunting feature works—and its limits
The detector’s reported range is about 5 cm (2 inches), according to New Atlas. That makes it a close-inspection aid: the pilot must bring the drone very near an object before the detector can alert them. The operator then has to use the camera feed to maneuver the drone and net into position. Recovering buried objects would require particularly precise piloting, the report cautioned.

- DORY EXPLORE treasure-hunting photography and videography underwater drone, metal detector & net bag, Bluetooth RC, uncovers the secrets of the ocean and experience underwater Adventure (Mint Green)
In practical terms, Explore is suited to checking a suspected target at close range, not sweeping a large area from a distance. The metal detector and net add a way to attempt collection, but they do not make the vehicle an autonomous search or retrieval system.
Explore versus the standard Dory
| Feature | Dory Explore | Standard Dory |
|---|---|---|
| Joystick remote | Included, according to New Atlas’s December 30, 2024 report. | Reported as an optional accessory. |
| Metal detector | Included; reported detection range is about 5 cm (2 inches). | Not included in the standard package described by New Atlas. |
| Collection net | Included; clips onto the detector when needed. | Not included in the standard package described by New Atlas. |
| Technical platform | Reported as otherwise technically identical to the standard Dory. | Baseline configuration. |
The meaningful difference is the included control and treasure-hunting accessories, rather than a reported change to the drone’s core specifications. The added detector and net also mean more hardware to manage, while the detector’s short range makes careful positioning central to any retrieval attempt.

Reported Dory specifications
New Atlas’s December 2024 report listed the following product specifications. They are reported figures, not independent test results.
| Specification | Figure reported by New Atlas (2024) |
|---|---|
| Weight | 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) |
| Maximum depth | 15 m (49 ft) |
| Thrusters | Five: three vertical and two horizontal |
| Maximum forward speed | 1.5 knots |
| Spotlights | Two, rated at 250 lumens each |
| Recording | Up to 1080p at 30 frames per second, recorded to the buoy’s 16 GB internal memory |
| Reported runtime and charge time | 35 minutes to four hours of runtime after a three-hour simultaneous charge; battery use varies with speed and spotlight use |
| Phone-to-buoy wireless communication distance | Up to 15 m |
How the tether and phone connection work
The Dory is connected by an electrical cable to a surface buoy. The phone app communicates wirelessly with that buoy, rather than directly with the submerged drone. New Atlas reported a maximum wireless communication distance of 15 m between the phone and buoy. The tethered arrangement is an important part of how the system operates; the wireless link does not mean the drone is untethered.
