Chandra and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveal different parts of the Galactic Center because they observe different kinds of light. Chandra detects X-rays from extremely hot gas and compact sources; Webb detects infrared light that can pass through dust and show stars, gas, and changing emission near Sagittarius A*. Together, their observations provide complementary clues about the crowded region around the Milky Way’s central black hole—not a direct picture of the black hole itself.
What is the difference between Chandra and Webb?
The key difference is wavelength. Chandra is an X-ray observatory, while Webb observes infrared light. These bands reveal distinct conditions and sources, so neither telescope is a replacement for the other.

NASA’s Galactic Center composite uses Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer; it is not a Chandra-and-Webb image. NASA describes the Chandra layer as showing gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and outflows from the central black hole. The assigned blue and violet colors encode X-ray data; they are not the colors a person would see with unaided eyes.
What does Chandra show at the Galactic Center?
Million-degree gas and energetic sources
X-rays trace high-energy conditions. In the Galactic Center, Chandra observations show hot gas as well as numerous point sources. This makes the observatory useful for studying energetic processes and identifying X-ray-emitting objects in an exceptionally crowded field.

The scale of Chandra’s deep view
NASA’s 2026 release describes a deep Chandra image covering about 60 light-years and combining 86 observations with more than three million seconds of exposure. It contains more than 3,300 detected X-ray sources. Those figures describe that image and field; they are not a count of every object in the Galactic Center. What does Webb reveal about Sagittarius A*?
Webb’s infrared observations can follow changing light close to Sagittarius A* through a dusty, crowded environment. NASA’s NIRCam material combines observations at 2.1 and 4.8 microns. In the displayed sequence, a point of light brightens and dims, with faint flickers and brighter flares; about nine hours of observations are compressed into a 30-second time-lapse. The sequence shows variability in the surroundings, not the black hole’s surface. Details are in NASA’s Sagittarius A* observations and light curve.

Sagittarius A* is the Milky Way’s central supermassive black hole, with a mass of approximately four million Suns according to NASA’s overview of the Galactic Center. That is contextual information, not a mass measurement made by the Chandra image or Webb sequence described here.
Can Chandra and Webb observations be compared directly?
They can be compared as observations of related activity, but their signals are not interchangeable. X-rays and infrared light arise from different physical processes, and a composite image can combine data from multiple observatories. The visible colors in such an image are assigned to represent measurements in otherwise invisible wavelength bands; they do not mean that a single telescope captured a full-color photograph.

A 2019 study analyzed more than 100 hours of simultaneous Spitzer infrared and Chandra X-ray data and identified four modest flares. It reported a tentative 10–20-minute X-ray lead, but the 99.7% confidence interval included zero. The result therefore remained statistically consistent with the infrared and X-ray changes occurring at the same time; it does not establish a reliable lag between Webb and Chandra. The study is available as Boyce et al. (2019).

Combining wavelengths helps astronomers distinguish what is happening in a complex region. Chandra can identify high-energy gas and X-ray sources; infrared observations can reveal structures and variability in the dusty environment. NASA’s Sagittarius C example combines Webb infrared observations with Chandra and radio data, illustrating how different bands add context. It concerns a nearby star-forming region, and the possible supernova remnant in that report is a candidate—not a confirmed discovery about Sagittarius A*. See NASA’s Sagittarius C report.

Catalogs also help connect observations. NASA’s Chandra Source Catalog provides precise positions and X-ray energies that can be compared with observations from Webb and other observatories. The HEASARC catalog of Galactic Center Chandra X-ray sources with near-infrared counterparts records candidate matches. A proposed counterpart or color-based classification is not certain identification for every source.
