The projects added about 10.8 megawatts (MW) of critical capacity, bringing the company’s global data-center capacity to more than 185 MW, according to its July 22, 2015 announcement.
Which six markets did CenturyLink expand in?
The 2015 projects covered these six markets:
- Boston
- London
- Minneapolis–St. Paul
- Phoenix
- Seattle
- Washington, D.C.
The six-market expansion referred to projects in North America and Europe. CenturyLink separately described extending its public-cloud platform into Asia-Pacific and partnering with a data-center provider across five Australian markets; those moves were not part of the six named expansions.
How much capacity did the projects add?
CenturyLink reported that the completed work added approximately 10.8 MW of critical capacity. Afterward, the company said its global data-center capacity exceeded 185 MW. It also said the expanded facilities were designed to support up to an additional 35 MW as demand grew. These are company-wide totals and design capacity figures, not a breakdown by city; the announcement does not state how much capacity each market received.
Why did CenturyLink choose these markets?
CenturyLink said demand patterns drove the expansion. Enterprises were consolidating infrastructure previously kept on-site or spread across data centers and shifting workloads toward cloud and hybrid IT. The company positioned colocation as a way to obtain flexible, reliable capacity in specific geographic regions.

That geographic emphasis matters for organizations choosing where workloads and infrastructure should reside. The announcement describes CenturyLink’s rationale, but does not provide city-by-city latency measurements, connectivity comparisons, or facility-level power figures.

In November 2016, CenturyLink announced an agreement to sell its data centers and colocation business to a consortium led by BC Partners and Medina Capital for $2.15 billion in cash plus a minority stake. The announced portfolio included 57 data centers, approximately 195 MW of capacity, and 2.6 million square feet. CenturyLink said it would continue offering colocation through commercial relationships after the sale.

The transaction closed on May 1, 2017. CenturyLink’s 2017 Form 10-K says the company received $1.8 billion in pre-tax cash proceeds and a minority stake in the limited partnership that owned the newly formed Cyxtera Technologies. Thus, the six-market expansion was a CenturyLink-era investment; the later sale transferred the data-center and colocation portfolio into the Cyxtera structure.
