A centralized exchange (CEX) manages crypto held in your exchange account and intermediates trades. A decentralized exchange (DEX) can let you swap crypto directly from a self-custody wallet using smart contracts. The key difference is who controls the assets and who must handle access, execution, and risk—not a guarantee that one option is cheaper or safer.
How centralized and decentralized exchanges work
A CEX provides an account through which you trade. The platform manages the crypto held in that account and handles the trade as an intermediary. Many centralized exchanges use order books, though the exact trading model depends on the venue. For an overview of the distinction, see Coinbase’s explanation of exchanges and self-custody wallets.
A DEX lets users trade through a wallet and smart contracts rather than handing custody of their assets to a conventional exchange account. In the Uniswap model, swaps interact with liquidity pools using an automated market maker (AMM), rather than matching orders in a traditional order book. That is one DEX design, not a rule that applies to every DEX. See how the Uniswap protocol works.
What changes for you
| Consideration | Centralized exchange | Decentralized exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | The platform manages assets held in your exchange account. | You can retain assets in a self-custody wallet and sign transactions yourself. |
| Trade execution | A centralized intermediary handles trades; order-book trading is common but not universal. | Smart contracts execute swaps. Some DEXs, including Uniswap, use AMMs and liquidity pools. |
| Costs | Fees and pricing depend on the particular platform and trade; there is no universal CEX fee schedule. | Network gas applies to onchain activity. An interface may also charge a service fee, and liquidity and execution affect the result. |
| Asset access | The platform selects which assets it supports. | Interfaces may expose a wider range of tokens, but availability does not mean a token has been vetted. |
| Access and recovery | You use the platform’s account and depend on its access and withdrawal procedures. | You manage wallet access and transaction authorization; losing access can mean losing control of the assets. |
Custody: convenience versus direct control
With a CEX, the platform manages account assets
Using an exchange account means trusting the provider to safeguard and make assets available under its terms. You also depend on its account-access and withdrawal processes. Read the platform’s withdrawal conditions and consider what happens if the provider changes its service or you cannot access your account.

With a DEX, you manage the wallet
The self-custody flow described here requires a wallet: you control its private keys and authorize transactions. That gives you direct control, but recovery and security are your responsibility. A hardware wallet is optional; the sources cited here do not establish that any particular device is necessary or evaluate specific models. Coinbase summarizes the distinction between platform-managed funds and self-custody in its wallet and exchange guide.
Compare the full cost of a trade, not one fee
There is no supported one-number answer to whether CEXs or DEXs are cheaper. Costs vary by venue, chain, token pair, trade size, and current market conditions. A DEX swap incurs network gas, paid in the network’s native currency. The interface may add a separate service fee, while liquidity and the quoted execution price affect how much crypto you receive.

Token availability is not the same as token quality
A centralized platform curates its supported assets. A DEX interface may make more tokens available, but access alone does not show that a token is legitimate, liquid, or safe. Coinbase explicitly notes that DEX assets available through its described product have not passed its asset-listing process. Before swapping, verify the token and chain using reliable information, and examine the transaction details rather than relying on a token name or search result.

Risks and responsibilities to weigh
Risks when using a centralized exchange
- You depend on the provider’s custody, account systems, and withdrawal terms.
- Supported assets and services are determined by the platform.
- Platform-specific restrictions and availability can vary by location.
Risks when using a DEX
- You are responsible for wallet access, choosing the correct network and token, and signing the intended transaction.
- Smart-contract, network, or execution problems can affect a trade even when you retain control of your wallet.
- Slippage and limited liquidity can produce a result different from the one you expected.
- An available token has not necessarily been reviewed or approved by the interface you use.
Neither model removes risk; it changes which parties and failure modes you must account for. Ethereum.org’s discussion of provider trust in delegated staking concerns staking services specifically, not every exchange product, but illustrates the general custody trade-off: relying on a provider means relying on its processes and terms.

- Consider a CEX if you prefer an account-based service and are comfortable relying on the provider’s custody, supported assets, and withdrawal rules.
- Consider a DEX if you want to trade from a self-custody wallet and can manage wallet access, transaction approvals, and onchain costs.
- Compare the actual trade when price matters: check the same asset pair and approximate size, then review the current quote, fees, liquidity, and execution details for each available venue.
- Pause if a requirement is unclear: do not approve a wallet transaction until you understand the network, token, amount, and permissions it requests.
DEX interfaces, fee structures, supported chains, and regional access differ. Coinbase’s product-specific help page, for example, describes its own DEX flow and regional scope; confirm current terms in the service you plan to use.
