Moving perpetual trading from a centralized exchange (CEX) to an on-chain venue changes where you place trust; it does not remove trading risk. A CEX usually concentrates custody and key operations in a company. An on-chain venue may let you keep control of your wallet and inspect some activity on a public blockchain, but shifts responsibility toward your own key security and adds exposure to contracts, blockchains and related infrastructure. Both models can expose you to leverage, funding, liquidity, execution and liquidation risk. Which is more suitable depends on the specific venue, its rules and your ability to manage those risks—not on the label “centralized” or “decentralized.”

What changes when you trade perpetuals on-chain?

A perpetual contract is a leveraged derivative with no fixed expiry date. Its price can differ from the underlying spot price; periodic funding payments are intended to encourage trading that narrows that difference. Funding can change over time, and a trader may pay it rather than receive it. Unlike an expiring futures contract, a perpetual has no maturity date that guarantees convergence to spot at a particular time.

The venue determines how orders, collateral, margin and liquidations are handled. On a CEX, customers commonly trade through exchange accounts and rely on the operator’s systems and custody arrangements. An on-chain venue may instead have users connect wallets and interact with smart contracts or other blockchain-based components. Designs vary: “on-chain” does not, by itself, tell you where every part of execution happens or what assets a user controls.

How the main risks differ

Risk area Centralized exchange On-chain perpetual venue
Custody and recovery Where customer assets are held, how account balances are recorded, and whether withdrawals remain available depend on the operator and its custody arrangements. Insolvency treatment can depend on applicable law and the specific arrangements; it should not be assumed from the venue category. A user may retain wallet control, but must secure the private keys and use the correct wallet and transaction flows. Key loss or compromise can result in permanent asset loss. Self-custody does not remove reliance on every service or infrastructure provider.
Execution and visibility Execution and account records may rely on systems operated by the exchange. What customers can independently verify depends on the venue’s disclosures and design. Some transactions and actions may be publicly auditable, depending on the implementation. Public visibility does not establish that every component is on-chain, that code is free from vulnerabilities or that execution will remain fair in stressed conditions.
Technical dependencies Users depend on the operator’s systems and operational continuity, as well as any external custody or service providers involved. Risks may include smart-contract or protocol vulnerabilities, blockchain disruption and, depending on the product, dependencies such as oracles, bridges, wallets or validators. Which dependencies apply is venue-specific.
Trading and liquidation Leverage, funding, liquidity, slippage and liquidation rules still matter. The exchange’s particular margin, pricing and default-management rules determine how these risks play out. The same market risks remain, alongside the venue’s particular contract, oracle, settlement and liquidation design. Blockchain congestion or a protocol disruption may affect a user’s ability to act, depending on the implementation.

The table describes common differences, not guarantees about every venue. In a comment submitted to a CFTC regulatory docket, a participant described one on-chain implementation as recording actions such as orders and liquidations on a publicly auditable blockchain and using self-custody rather than an exchange omnibus account. The submission also identified private-key loss and software or blockchain vulnerabilities as risks. Those claims concern the implementation described by the commenter; they are not a CFTC finding and should not be generalized to every on-chain venue.

Where CEX custody risk comes from

When customer assets are held or administered by a company, the trader depends on that operator’s asset controls, records, systems, solvency and withdrawal arrangements. An exchange may make account-based trading operationally convenient, but a customer’s practical access to assets can depend on the company and the legal and technical arrangements around custody.

In guidance announced on 12 January 2026, Switzerland’s Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) discussed crypto-asset custody challenges, including technology and infrastructure and legal complexity when custody is abroad. FINMA said customer assets should not form part of a custodian’s bankruptcy estate, while noting the relevance of applicable arrangements and rules. This is Swiss supervisory context, not a universal insolvency guarantee or a statement about derivatives regulation. A trader should check the custody structure and legal protections relevant to the particular provider and jurisdiction.

What self-custody adds—and what it does not solve

With self-custody, control of the wallet’s private keys can remain with the user rather than resting entirely on an exchange’s omnibus custody. That changes the failure mode: the user takes on key handling, wallet security and transaction-signing responsibilities. Poor key security can lead to irreversible loss, and a hardware wallet may help with private-key control without protecting against leverage losses, liquidation, vulnerable protocol code, oracle problems, chain outages or market moves.

Publicly inspectable transactions can help users examine certain execution events or fund flows. But transparency is not a safety guarantee. It does not prove that a protocol’s code is sound, that all relevant operations are visible on-chain, that a market has enough liquidity, or that an oracle and underlying blockchain will behave as expected.

Funding is not a guaranteed return

Funding is a recurring payment mechanism intended to help keep a perpetual’s price aligned with spot; the rate can vary, and the payment can flow in either direction. A positive funding rate observed at one moment is not a promise that it will persist or that a position will earn a net return after costs and risk.

Cross-venue funding arbitrage is a basis trade, not frictionless carry. A 2026 open-access paper by Edson Pindza in Digital Finance identifies several ways such a trade can fail:

  • Funding-spread compression: the difference between venues’ rates can shrink before or while the position is held.
  • Imperfect hedging: positions on different venues may not offset each other exactly as prices or contract behavior change.
  • Execution frictions: fees, slippage and difficulty getting both sides filled can erode the apparent spread.
  • Forced liquidation: leverage and margin rules can close a leg of the trade before the expected funding is realized.
  • Settlement or technical disruption: contract, settlement or smart-contract problems can interfere with a hedge or its exit.

The paper’s empirical design used Binance Futures funding observations for BTC, ETH and SOL from January 2021 through December 2024. It also modeled synthetic DEX funding rates to examine oracle lag, structural spreads and higher rate noise, and included a robustness exercise using observed dYdX v4 funding data over an overlapping available period. The synthetic scenarios are not observations across all DEXs, and the authors caution that results depend on assumptions; the study does not establish frictionless profits or a current, market-wide ranking of venue safety.

Do not treat a disclosed safeguard as equivalent to a guarantee: read its scope, conditions and exclusions. The answer may differ by product, legal entity, user location and contract.

What regulation can—and cannot—tell you

Regulatory requirements are jurisdiction- and product-specific. A 2026 high-level framework from Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission concerns perpetual contracts offered by SFC-licensed virtual-asset trading platforms. The framework describes funding payments as a way to promote intra-day and/or daily price convergence and discusses disclosure of risks, liquidation triggers and settlement prices, loss allocation, and reserve or insurance-fund arrangements. Its scope is licensed Hong Kong platforms; it should not be read as a global rule or as automatically applying to permissionless protocols.

Regulatory oversight, where it applies, can shape disclosures and operational expectations, but it does not remove market or technical risk. Check whether a provider is licensed for the service in question and whether the protections described actually cover your product and location.
