The Celestron SkyMaster 15×70 is a budget-oriented binocular that can make the Moon and broad deep-sky targets enjoyable to explore, but it is best used on a sturdy tripod. Its 15× magnification makes handheld viewing shaky, and a hands-on review reports visible color fringing around bright objects. It is a better fit for astronomy and distant stationary subjects than for tracking birds or other moving targets.

What the SkyMaster 15×70 is—and what it is not

Celestron identifies this model as the SkyMaster 15×70 Porro binocular, item 71009. It is not the SkyMaster 15–35×70 zoom model or one of the SkyMaster Pro or Pro ED models. Similar names do not guarantee matching specifications or included accessories, so check the exact model when comparing the range.

The combination of 15× magnification and 70 mm objective lenses is intended to gather more light than compact binoculars while showing a narrower slice of the scene. That makes it more suited to looking at the Moon, star fields, and distant stationary subjects than to following fast movement.

How it performs for astronomy

In Kimberley Lane’s hands-on review for Live Science, published March 10, 2025, the binoculars delivered bright, sharp views of the Moon. The reviewer also enjoyed finding star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. Those observations make the model a plausible starter for someone who wants a relatively large aperture without moving immediately to a telescope.

The same review reports visible chromatic aberration—color fringing around bright objects—and a stiff focus wheel. The reviewer saw Uranus and Neptune during a planetary parade, but cautioned that the binoculars should not be expected to show detailed planetary views. Treat those observations as one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of identical results for every unit or viewing condition. Read the Live Science review for its full account.

Why a tripod matters

At 15×, small hand movements are magnified along with the view. Lane found handheld views shaky and said a sturdy tripod was needed for steady extended observing. The included adapter lets you mount the binoculars, but you must supply the tripod. Select support that can carry the binoculars securely and still allow a useful range of pointing for sky viewing.

Is it suitable for birdwatching or daytime viewing?

It can be used for distant, stationary scenery, particularly when mounted, but it is not an especially convenient choice for everyday wildlife viewing. Celestron lists a 4.4° angular field, equivalent to 231 ft at 1,000 yd; the Live Science reviewer found that field narrow for tracking wildlife and considered the high magnification less practical for moving birds.

Celestron SkyMaster Pro ED 15x70 Binoculars for Sharp Night Views
  • PREMIUM ED OBJECTIVE LENSES: Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass virtually eliminates chromatic aberration or color fringing, a visual defect common in binoculars. You'll enjoy razor-sharp images with outstanding, true-to-life color.
  • POWERFUL 15X MAGNIFICATION: With these giant astronomy binoculars, you get massive 70mm objective lenses and powerful 15x magnification. It's the most popular combination for viewing objects in the night sky and distant land-based targets.
  • XLT LENS COATINGS: All air-to-glass surfaces are multi-coated with Celestron’s proprietary XLT coatings – the same ones we use on our observatory-class telescopes. XLT maximizes light transmission through the optical path for brighter images.
  • THREADED TO ACCEPT ASTRONOMICAL EYEPIECE FILTERS: Add an 1.25" astronomical eyepice filter to each eyepiece to experience game-changing views.
  • DURABLE, WATERPROOF BODY: A rubber-armored, polycarbonate housing protects your binoculars from damage and stands up to the toughest weather conditions. They're also fully waterproof and nitrogen purged to prevent internal fogging of the lenses.

For choosing between binoculars, consider the target and not just magnification: a wider field and easier handheld handling matter when following movement, while a stable mount and light-gathering aperture are more useful for stationary sky targets.

Weather handling and care

Celestron labels the binocular water resistant, but says it is not nitrogen filled. In the Live Science review, the binoculars fogged when moved between cold and warm environments, and the reviewer described them as not fogproof. Those are distinct points: the maker’s water-resistance description does not establish waterproof or fogproof performance.

Who should consider the SkyMaster 15×70?

  • Consider it if you want an entry-level, large-aperture binocular for the Moon, broad sky viewing, or distant stationary subjects, and are prepared to use a sturdy tripod.
  • Look elsewhere if handheld comfort, following birds, or more strongly corrected views around bright targets are priorities. The review’s reported chromatic aberration and narrow field are relevant trade-offs.
  • Compare exact models if you are considering another SkyMaster: Celestron lists 12×60, 25×70, 20×80, and zoom variants, but their specifications and accessories may differ.

Important solar safety warning

Never look directly at the Sun through the SkyMaster 15×70, and never use it to project the Sun’s image onto a surface. Celestron warns that direct viewing can cause permanent, irreversible eye damage; solar projection can heat and damage the binoculars and attached accessories. Follow the warning on Celestron’s product page and the manufacturer’s instructions.
