A CDN delivers and accelerates content through distributed servers; a web application firewall (WAF) inspects HTTP(S) requests and applies rules to control which requests reach an application. Bot protection is a set of controls for automated traffic, and providers may build it into a CDN, a WAF, or an integrated security service. The categories overlap, so the practical comparison is what each product detects, where it acts, and what it can do with a request—not whether one label replaces another.
What each tool does
CDN: deliver content from the edge
A content delivery network (CDN) serves content through a distributed network, often bringing delivery closer to visitors. Some CDN services also offer security controls at the edge, including bot handling. Those controls are product capabilities, not an automatic feature of every CDN.
WAF: inspect application requests
A WAF evaluates HTTP and HTTPS requests and applies rules to decide which should reach protected application resources. AWS defines AWS WAF as a service for monitoring requests forwarded to protected resources and controlling access based on specified conditions. See AWS’s overview of AWS WAF.
Bot protection: identify and handle automation
Bot management focuses on automated traffic. Depending on the provider, it may identify bots, classify requests, and let operators monitor, rate-limit, challenge, CAPTCHA, or block selected traffic. AWS Bot Control, for example, labels bot-related requests so rules can match them and customize handling. Its common and targeted levels differ in detection depth; targeted detection includes methods such as browser interrogation, fingerprinting, behavior heuristics, and optional machine-learning analysis. These are AWS product details, not a standard feature set shared by all CDNs and WAFs. See AWS WAF Bot Control and AWS guidance on choosing and configuring Bot Control.

How CDN bot protection and WAF bot controls compare
| Question | CDN bot protection | WAF bot protection |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Content delivery; bot controls may be part of an edge-security offering. | HTTP(S) request inspection and rule-based access control; bot controls may be included or integrated. |
| Where it acts | Often at the CDN edge, before traffic reaches the application. | Where the WAF is deployed in the request path; it may be associated with a CDN or another protected resource. |
| Detection to check | Whether the actual product identifies bots, which categories it exposes, and whether detection extends beyond self-identified or common bots. | Whether bot identification is included, what labels or evidence are available, and whether sophisticated-bot detection requires a separate level or service. |
| Available responses | Verify whether the service can observe, rate-limit, challenge, CAPTCHA, or block. | Verify which actions its rules support and whether rules can be tested in monitor or count mode before enforcement. |
| Client IP handling | Confirm how the edge service identifies the originating visitor when traffic is proxied. | Ensure rules that use IP addresses receive the correct client IP rather than only the address of an intermediary proxy. |
| Cost and operations | Check whether bot features are included or separately charged, and what logging and tuning they require. | Check managed-rule and bot-feature charges separately, along with rule maintenance, logging, and incident response. |
Can a CDN replace a WAF?
Not by definition. A CDN may offer request filtering and bot controls, but delivery and security features vary by provider and product. A CDN is not a substitute for a WAF merely because it sits in front of an application. Check whether its rules inspect the requests and conditions you need to control, and whether its enforcement and logs meet your operational requirements.
Likewise, a WAF does not automatically provide a CDN’s content-delivery function. If an integrated service combines both, evaluate the actual capabilities and traffic path rather than relying on the product name.

Can a WAF stop bots?
It can, if it has suitable bot-management features and rules. Basic request rules may filter traffic based on request attributes, but identifying automated clients and distinguishing harmful automation from legitimate crawlers can require dedicated bot detection. AWS Bot Control illustrates one implementation: it labels bot traffic, and rules can then monitor, block, rate-limit, or otherwise customize how matching requests are handled. AWS says the managed rule group incurs additional charges; the cited documentation does not establish a current price, so check current AWS pricing before budgeting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a CDN and WAF together?
Yes. A CDN can handle delivery and edge enforcement while a WAF applies request-inspection rules. AWS documents enabling AWS WAF protections, including Bot Control, for CloudFront distributions; this is a specific AWS configuration example, not a guarantee that every provider integrates the same way. See AWS instructions for enabling AWS WAF for distributions.

For that integration, AWS Bot Control automatically recognizes traffic from CloudFront, Cloudflare, and Fastly and uses the originating client IP from standard client-IP headers. AWS’s documented behavior is specific to that managed rule group; it should not be assumed for other proxies, vendors, or WAF rules. For other proxy paths or IP-based rules, configure forwarded-IP handling as needed and verify that the rule sees the visitor’s address. See AWS WAF Bot Control documentation.

How to choose and deploy the right controls
- Define the problem. Decide whether you need content delivery, general HTTP request filtering, bot identification, or a combination. Name the traffic you want to handle, such as scrapers, scanners, crawlers, or abusive automated requests.
- Trace the request path. Identify where the CDN, other proxies, WAF, and application sit. Check which component makes each decision and whether it receives the real client IP.
- Compare detection and actions. Confirm what bot categories and evidence the service exposes, whether it detects only common or self-declared bots or also more sophisticated automation, and which responses are available.
- Test before enforcing. AWS recommends testing and tuning Bot Control in a test environment, then using count mode with production traffic to observe likely effects before turning on enforcement. See AWS guidance on testing and deploying Bot Control.
- Review cost and operations. Check for separate bot-control charges, and plan for logs, rule tuning, false-positive review, and incident response. AWS states that Bot Control has additional charges; the amount depends on current pricing and is not specified here.
What to verify before buying or enabling bot protection
- Does the product provide delivery, request filtering, bot management, or a clearly documented combination?
- Where does enforcement occur, and does traffic pass through that point consistently?
- Can operators distinguish legitimate crawlers and other useful automation from unwanted bots?
- Can rules be observed in count or monitor mode before they block or challenge visitors?
- Are client IP headers configured correctly for every proxy and rule that relies on IP addresses?
- Are bot features separately charged, and are their logs and actions sufficient for your team to tune them?
