CAT and DE suit different portfolio exposures, not a simple “better company” contest. Caterpillar’s business is centered on construction, mining and resource industries, and power and energy; Deere combines agricultural equipment with turf, construction and forestry. Both also finance equipment purchases. Choose which mix better matches the industries and risks you want exposure to, then compare valuation and financial strength using the same date and methods. The latest reported quarters offer useful context, but they ended on different dates and do not establish which stock is the better buy.

How do Caterpillar and Deere make their money?

Caterpillar: construction, resources, and power and energy

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) reports businesses spanning construction industries, resource industries, and power and energy, alongside Financial Products. That gives it exposure to demand for construction and infrastructure equipment, mining and other resource-related machinery, and power-generation and energy equipment. Its mix is broader than construction alone, but results remain sensitive to customers’ investment plans and the industries Caterpillar serves.

Deere: agriculture, turf, construction, and forestry

Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) reports Production & Precision Agriculture; Small Agriculture & Turf; Construction & Forestry; and Financial Services. Agriculture is a defining part of its equipment mix, while turf, construction, and forestry provide additional end-market exposure. Deere’s finance operation also ties its results to customer equipment purchases and access to credit.

Both companies sell capital equipment and operate financing businesses, so neither is a pure-play manufacturer insulated from credit conditions. The meaningful distinction is the balance of end markets: CAT is more aligned with resource, construction, and power-and-energy spending; DE has more direct agricultural exposure.

What do their latest reported results show?

The reporting windows differ: Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 ended June 30, 2026, while Deere’s Q2 2026 ended May 3, 2026. The percentages below are year-over-year comparisons reported by each company; they are not results for identical calendar periods.

Company and period Sales and revenues Profit measure What the release indicates
Caterpillar, Q2 2026; quarter ended June 30 $20.543 billion, up 24% year over year Operating profit of $4.295 billion, up 50% The company attributed the increase mainly to higher sales volume. Operating profit included $392 million of expected IEEPA tariff recoveries.
Deere, Q2 2026; quarter ended May 3 $13.369 billion, up 5% year over year Net income of $1.773 billion, down 2% Production & Precision Agriculture results were weaker, while Small Agriculture & Turf and Construction & Forestry showed growth.

These figures come from Caterpillar’s August 4, 2026 earnings release and Deere’s May 21, 2026 earnings release. Sales growth alone does not settle which is the stronger investment: the firms have different segment mixes and reporting dates, and Caterpillar’s reported operating profit included the stated tariff-recovery item.

Fiscal-year context

For fiscal 2025, Caterpillar reported $67.589 billion in sales and revenues. Deere reported $5.027 billion of net income attributable to Deere & Company, down from $7.100 billion in fiscal 2024. These are different financial measures, so they should not be read as a direct size or profitability comparison.

Deere’s Q2 2026 release also gave management guidance for fiscal 2026 net income of $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion. That is an outlook, not a realized result, and could change as market conditions evolve.

Which stock better matches the exposure you want?

  • Consider CAT’s business mix if you want exposure to construction, mining and resource industries, or power-and-energy equipment demand.
  • Consider DE’s business mix if you want more direct exposure to agricultural equipment, with additional turf, construction, and forestry businesses.
  • For either stock, account for financing. Equipment finance connects results to customer demand and credit conditions as well as manufacturing operations.

This is an end-market fit framework, not a buy recommendation. A company’s industry exposure does not by itself show whether its shares are attractively priced or appropriate for a particular investor.

How should you compare CAT and DE before investing?

  1. Start with segment mix. Read each company’s latest annual filing and identify which businesses drive sales and operating results. Segment labels and definitions differ, so compare the underlying markets rather than treating the segments as interchangeable.
  2. Separate operating drivers. In quarterly releases, distinguish volume, pricing, currency effects, costs, and unusual or nonrecurring items. For example, Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 operating profit included expected tariff recoveries, while its release also cited higher sales volume and favorable pricing.
  3. Review financing and credit exposure. Consider each finance operation alongside equipment demand: customer access to credit can affect purchases, and finance businesses have their own credit-cycle risks.
  4. Compare financial capacity from matched filings. Use comparable definitions and periods to assess cash generation, debt, dividends, share repurchases, and finance-segment risks. The headline quarterly figures above are not a substitute for that work.
  5. Compare valuation on one date and one basis. Use synchronized share prices and consistently calculated measures, such as price-to-earnings, enterprise value to operating earnings, or cash-flow multiples. Different measures can imply different relative valuations, especially when earnings are cyclical.
  6. Fit the risk to your portfolio. Consider your time horizon, ability to tolerate cyclical swings, existing exposure to industrials or agriculture, and whether either company would concentrate risks you already hold.

What are the main risks in this comparison?

  • End-market cycles: construction, mining, agriculture, forestry, and other capital-spending markets can weaken, reducing demand for new equipment.
  • Different segment conditions: Deere’s Q2 2026 release described ongoing challenges in global agricultural markets; weaker Production & Precision Agriculture results coexisted with growth in Small Agriculture & Turf and Construction & Forestry.
  • Credit conditions: customers’ ability and willingness to finance equipment purchases can affect both manufacturers and their finance operations.
  • Items affecting reported results: Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 operating profit included expected IEEPA tariff recoveries. Investors should distinguish such effects from underlying operating trends and consult the full issuer filings for risk factors.
  • Outlook uncertainty: company guidance and historical earnings are not guarantees of future results. Quarterly reports also cover different periods and cannot be treated as perfectly aligned snapshots.

Neither company is a universal winner on the evidence of its latest quarter. A current relative-value conclusion would require synchronized share prices and comparable valuation calculations, as well as an investor-specific view of business mix, cyclicality, and portfolio fit.
