For most gigabit connections, Cat 5e is enough. Choose Cat 6 for extra headroom or a shorter 10 Gb/s link; for a new copper run that must support 10 Gb/s across a channel up to 100 m, choose Cat 6A. The cable category alone does not set your internet speed: both connected devices and the correctly installed link must support the target rate.

Cat 5e vs. Cat 6 vs. Cat 6A at a glance

Category Maximum specified frequency Supported use in Fluke Networks’ comparison Best fit
Cat 5e 100 MHz 1 Gb/s over a channel up to 100 m Ordinary gigabit links
Cat 6 250 MHz 1 Gb/s over a channel up to 100 m; 10 Gb/s to about 35 m Gigabit links with headroom, or a qualified shorter 10 Gb/s link
Cat 6A 500 MHz 10 Gb/s over a channel up to 100 m New long copper runs designed for 10 Gb/s

These figures are from Fluke Networks’ network engineer guide. The distance figures describe channel support in that comparison, not a guarantee for every cable, connector, or installation.

Which cable should you buy?

Choose Cat 5e for a typical gigabit connection

Cat 5e is a reasonable choice when your network connection is 1 Gb/s or less and the cable and installation meet specification. Its 100 MHz rating is a cabling frequency specification, not a 100 Mb/s speed cap; the category does not determine your internet plan’s speed.

Choose Cat 6 for extra headroom or shorter 10 Gb/s links

Cat 6 supports 1 Gb/s over a 100 m channel and can support 10 Gb/s on shorter links; Fluke Networks’ comparison lists 10GBASE-T to about 35 m. Do not assume that Cat 6 supports 10 Gb/s across a full 100 m channel. Whether an existing Cat 6 link can run faster also depends on conditions such as crosstalk and installation quality.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose Cat 6A for a new 10 Gb/s run up to 100 m

If you are installing copper cabling intended to carry 10GBASE-T across a channel up to 100 m, Cat 6A is the supported choice in the cited comparison. Its 500 MHz category rating accompanies support for that longer 10 Gb/s channel; it does not make devices at either end faster.

When can Cat 5e or Cat 6 run faster than 1 Gb/s?

Fluke Networks notes that Cat 5e and Cat 6 may support 2.5 or 5 Gb/s in some qualified installations, and that Cat 6 may support 10 Gb/s over shorter links. These are conditional capabilities, not blanket promises for every existing cable run. Alien crosstalk and other link conditions affect whether a particular installation qualifies. See Fluke Networks’ 10GBASE-T field-testing requirements for the testing context.

Check the whole link, not just the cable label

  • Confirm device speeds: The Ethernet ports at both ends must support the desired rate. A higher-category cable cannot upgrade a router, switch, computer, or internet service.
  • Consider the complete channel: The supported distance applies to the channel, not merely a cable segment in isolation. Connectors and installation conditions matter.
  • For a permanent run, verify the installed link: Category markings on cable and connectors alone do not establish that the completed installation is certified. Fluke Networks says certification requires compliant components, correct installation, and a passing test from a compliant field tester. Its guide explains these requirements at Fluke Networks and discusses the importance of certification at 3 Reasons Cabling Certification Is More Important Than Ever.

Why the category numbers can be misleading

The MHz figures describe cabling performance specifications; they are not Ethernet link speeds. A 100 MHz Cat 5e cable can support 1 Gb/s Ethernet over the channel length listed above, while a cable’s category by itself does not promise that a specific setup will achieve a particular internet speed. Standards terminology also deserves care: Fluke Networks cautions that TIA and ISO standards are not necessarily completely equivalent.

Fluke Networks lists Cat 5e as ratified in 2001, Cat 6 in 2002, and Cat 6A in 2009. Those dates identify category history, not how widely any category is currently used.

A quick decision checklist

  • For a normal gigabit link: choose Cat 5e if it meets the installation requirements.
  • For additional headroom or a potentially faster, shorter link: consider Cat 6, but do not count on 10 Gb/s over 100 m.
  • For a new copper channel up to 100 m that must support 10 Gb/s: choose Cat 6A.
  • Before expecting a speed increase, confirm the ports at both ends support it and that the installed link meets the relevant requirements.
