Neither cats nor dogs are automatically easier or better pets. A cat may fit a home that can provide daily attention, play, indoor enrichment, and clean litter facilities. A dog may fit a home that can reliably provide outdoor trips several times a day, exercise, training, and companionship. The right choice depends on your ordinary schedule, housing, household, budget, and the needs of the individual animal.
Which is easier to care for, a cat or a dog?
Neither is maintenance-free, and “independent cat” or “high-maintenance dog” are not dependable rules for an individual pet. Both need daily feeding, interaction, activity, appropriate grooming, and veterinary care. Their routines differ: dogs need outdoor opportunities multiple times a day, while cats need suitable indoor activity and a clean place to eliminate.
| Decision | Cat | Dog |
|---|---|---|
| Daily care | Feeding, social interaction, play, exercise, grooming as appropriate, and litter-box cleaning. In a multiple-cat home, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends multiple litter boxes in several locations. | Feeding, grooming, exercise, play, and outdoor access multiple times a day for elimination and activity. |
| Home setup | Can adapt to many housing types when needs are met. Provide enrichment and opportunities for exploration, predatory play, and scratching. | Consider the animal’s size and energy, housing rules, and access to suitable exercise areas. Some large or high-energy dogs can be harder to accommodate in apartments or condominiums. |
| Time away | Plan for care and attention during workdays, travel, illness, and emergencies. | Plan for outdoor access and social interaction. A dog left alone all day without activity or companionship may have unmet needs. |
| Age and training | Assess the particular cat’s activity, grooming, attention, and behavior needs rather than assuming all cats require little care. | Puppies need extra housetraining, socialization, training, feeding, exercise, and supervision. Some adult dogs are already housetrained and know basic commands. |
For cats, “indoors” does not mean “no exercise.” The AVMA says cats can adapt to many housing types when they have appropriate accommodations and opportunities for exercise, and advises providing an enriched indoor environment. For dogs, outdoor access is part of the daily plan, not an occasional extra. The AVMA cautions that a dog left alone all day without outlets for exercise, exploration, and social needs may become bored and destructive. AVMA guidance on selecting a cat and AVMA guidance on selecting a dog explain these species-specific considerations.
Is a cat or dog better for an apartment?
An apartment can work for either species if the home and routine meet the individual animal’s needs and the lease permits it. Cats may adapt to varied housing when they have enrichment, play, scratching options, and appropriate litter facilities. A dog’s fit depends in part on its size, energy, exercise needs, and access to suitable places for activity and elimination. A large or high-energy dog may be more difficult to accommodate in an apartment or condominium, but size alone does not determine suitability.

Should I get a cat or a dog if I work all day?
Start with the care plan you can actually sustain on a busy weekday. A dog needs multiple outdoor opportunities and social companionship; if those needs cannot be met while you are away, arrange reliable help rather than assuming the dog will manage alone. A cat still needs feeding, interaction, play, exercise, litter cleaning, and enrichment, as well as care during travel or unexpected absences.

Identify who will cover workdays, trips, illness, and emergencies. Do not assume a child can carry the responsibility without adult supervision. If no dependable person or service can provide the care the animal needs, reconsider the timing or choice of pet.
How do age and temperament change the choice?
A puppy or an adult dog
Puppies generally require more time for housetraining, socialization, obedience training, frequent feeding, exercise, and supervision. Some adult dogs already know basic commands and are housetrained, which may suit a household seeking a more established routine. Exercise and grooming needs vary among dogs; breed or mix, age, sex, health, temperament, and training all affect the fit. See the ASPCA’s general dog care guidance for factors that influence exercise needs.

The individual cat or dog
Ask a shelter, rescue, breeder, or veterinarian about the animal’s health, temperament, activity level, grooming, social needs, and training. Those details matter more than a broad claim that one species is always easier. As the AVMA puts it, “As its owner, you will ultimately be responsible for your dog’s food, shelter, companionship, exercise, and physical and mental health for the rest of its life.” The same basic commitment to meeting an animal’s needs should guide the decision about a cat.

Plan for more than adoption or purchase costs. Include food, routine and unexpected veterinary care, grooming, boarding, supplies, identification, and sterilization; dog owners may also need to budget for training, licensing, and dog-specific equipment. Actual costs depend on location, the animal’s needs, product choices, and care arrangements.

How to decide between a cat and a dog
- Check permission and household readiness. Confirm lease and local rules, consider allergies and other household members, and agree on who will be responsible.
- Write down a realistic weekday routine. Include a dog’s outdoor trips and activity, or a cat’s play, interaction, litter cleaning, and indoor enrichment.
- Make a backup-care plan. Decide who can help during workdays, travel, illness, and emergencies.
- Compare individual animals. Ask the shelter, rescue, breeder, or veterinarian about health, temperament, activity, grooming, and training needs.
- Estimate ongoing and unexpected expenses. Get current local costs; treat the ASPCA’s 2021 figures as historical estimates, not a quote.
- Prepare the appropriate setup. A cat may need a litter box, carrier, and scratching post. A dog may need a leash, collar, identification, and suitable resting space. These are examples, not exhaustive supply lists.
