Sambamurthy, had two public milestones: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released it in Bengaluru on 26 September 2026, and IIT Madras hosted a campus event celebrating its arrival on 5 October. The distinction matters: the IIT Madras event was not the date or location of the earlier release.
What happened at IIT Madras?
IIT Madras hosted a campus event on 5 October 2026 to mark the arrival of Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything. PTI’s report, published by ThePrint, says former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan described UPI as “an envy of the world now, and open to everyone from a street vendor to a billionaire.” Rangarajan also called the book a “brilliant narrative” of the events, policies and personalities behind UPI.
Where and when was the book released?
The earlier release took place on 26 September 2026 at IITMAA Sangam in Bengaluru, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released the book. The Ministry of Finance release documents that event. The 5 October gathering at IIT Madras was a separate campus event celebrating the book’s arrival.
What is Cashless Nation about?
Penguin Random House India describes the book as a narrative about UPI’s development and its effects on Indian payments and the relationships among citizens, markets and the state. Its stated focus includes the institutional, technological and partnership work behind India’s digital payments transformation. That makes the subject broader than a guide to making UPI payments: it is an account of how the system developed and changed the payments landscape.

The book’s promotional site displays figures including more than 200 billion UPI transactions annually, more than 500 million citizens reached and more than 65 million merchants enabled. It also claims India accounts for more than half of global digital payments. The site does not identify the original statistical publisher or a year for these figures, so they are best understood as promotional claims rather than independently verified current statistics.
Who wrote the book?
The authors are technologist and entrepreneur Santanu Paul and career banker B. Sambamurthy. According to their biographies published by Penguin Random House India, Paul’s experience includes technology and NPCI, while Sambamurthy’s career includes banking and roles at IDRBT and NPCI. These backgrounds place the authors close to the technology and institutional landscape the book describes.
