How Cardsmith turns a document into flashcards
According to creator Arthur031221’s October 1, 2026 launch post, Cardsmith accepts PDFs, PPTX slide decks, and plain text. It extracts text, divides it into chunks of roughly 120–900 words, and sends each chunk to a local model through Ollama with instructions to make cards using only facts from that chunk.
Each generated card includes a source_quote: the sentence intended to support it. Before you save cards, Cardsmith checks whether that quote is an exact substring of the original chunk. The creator says users can review the cards, edit them, or delete them. Cards are stored in a local SQLite database; the described workflow also includes a basic SM-2 review scheduler and export to an Anki .apkg deck.
These are implementation details reported by the creator; the repository was not independently verified. The creator describes the tool as single-user and single-machine, without an account or sync. Their post also identifies the project as MIT-licensed, a claim that should be confirmed in the repository before relying on it.

What the source check does—and does not—verify
An exact match establishes that the cited wording appears in the source chunk. It gives you a path to inspect why a card may have been generated, which is useful when reviewing AI-created material. It does not establish that the question is clear, that the answer faithfully represents the passage, or that the document itself is correct.
The distinction matters in practice: a card can quote a real sentence yet misinterpret it. The creator acknowledges that the default 4B model sometimes paraphrases quotes, which can make the mechanical check flag a card even when the intended support is nearby. A flagged quote therefore calls for review, not an automatic verdict about the card’s quality.
What the creator’s small evaluation found
In one creator-reported run on a 3,248-word public-domain biology chapter, Cardsmith produced 152 cards in about 13 minutes on a MacBook Air. The quote check matched 142 of the 152 card quotes to exact substrings in the source. The creator also hand-rated a sample of 40 cards: 37 were judged accurate, one inaccurate, and two unusable. The creator reported this as 92.5% accuracy, counting the 37 accurate cards against the 40-card sample.
Those numbers describe one run and one manually reviewed sample, not an independent benchmark. They do not establish how Cardsmith performs on other documents, models, or computers, and they say nothing about learning outcomes. The launch post says the evaluation method and raw cards are in the repository’s eval directory, but those materials were not independently reviewed.

PDFs with scans, equations, and diagrams
Cardsmith’s described workflow does not include OCR or a vision model. A scanned PDF whose pages are images therefore needs OCR preprocessing to turn the page content into readable text before the tool can use it. In a same-day creator Reddit post, the creator says image-only equations and diagrams are skipped. Selectable equations may be extracted, though their formatting can be imperfect.
This makes the preview especially important for technical material. Check generated cards against the original page, and edit or remove cards that depend on garbled equations, missing visual context, or a misleading interpretation.
How to judge whether Cardsmith fits your workflow
Cardsmith may suit someone who wants a locally described document-to-card workflow and values being able to inspect a cited passage before saving a card. Before choosing it over a hosted service or another local tool, compare the parts that affect your own study routine:
- Privacy and setup: The creator describes processing through a local Ollama model and local storage, with no account or sync. Confirm the current setup and data handling in the project’s own documentation.
- Traceability: Check whether cards cite supporting text and whether the tool verifies an exact match, semantic similarity, or something else. Cardsmith’s reported check is an exact substring match.
- Document coverage: Consider whether your materials contain selectable text or rely on scans, diagrams, and image-only equations. The described Cardsmith workflow does not OCR or interpret image-only content.
- Review and portability: The creator reports a basic SM-2 scheduler and Anki package export. Confirm that those features match your preferred review app and card workflow.
- Evidence for quality: Treat creator-run sample results as an initial indication, not a guarantee. The reported manual check covered 40 cards from one chapter.
