Cardano and Ethereum support different ways to build smart contracts and agent payments; neither is a universal winner. Ethereum’s account-based design and ERC-4337 smart-account infrastructure support programmable authorization, bundled operations, and optional sponsored or token-denominated fees. Cardano’s eUTxO model represents transactions as inputs and outputs, and its agent documentation describes x402 payments for HTTP requests and Masumi escrow. The right fit depends on how your application represents shared state, how much authority an agent receives, and which payment and wallet integrations its users need.

How do Cardano and Ethereum differ at the contract level?

Design question Cardano Ethereum
Ledger model Extended UTxO (eUTxO): transactions consume discrete outputs and create new ones. Application state can be carried in output data, often called datums. Account-based: addresses have balances in global state, and contracts can maintain their own storage.
Contract execution A validator checks whether a proposed transaction satisfies its rules. The transaction is assembled before evaluation. A contract’s code executes when it is called and can update contract storage.
Composing operations A transaction can spend from multiple script addresses and mint under multiple policies; its validators are checked as part of that transaction. Composition commonly uses contract calls, routers, aggregators, or multicalls.
Agent-payment building blocks documented by the platforms x402 for per-request HTTP payment; direct address payments, Masumi escrow, or a seller-selected custom contract. ERC-4337 UserOperations, bundlers, smart accounts, and optional paymasters for fee sponsorship.

This distinction affects how developers model state and concurrency. A Cardano validator evaluates a transaction’s proposed transformation; it does not independently initiate an action. Because a transaction commits to particular inputs and outputs, an input spent before submission can make the transaction fail. Ethereum contracts instead operate on shared account and contract state, so developers must reason about calls that read or change that state. Neither model automatically makes an application cheaper or simpler: transaction shape, contention, tooling, and workload matter. These descriptions follow Cardano’s developer comparison and smart-contract guide.

How can an AI agent pay on Ethereum?

Smart accounts and UserOperations

ERC-4337 adds account abstraction without changing Ethereum’s consensus protocol. A smart account can define its own validation and signature rules. Rather than sending an ordinary transaction directly, a client submits a UserOperation to a separate mempool. A bundler collects operations and submits a transaction that calls the EntryPoint contract, which processes them.

This separates the agent’s authorization logic from the bundler’s transaction submission. ERC-4337 also specifies optional paymasters: contracts that agree to cover transaction costs for a sender. The standard’s goals include sponsored fees, fees paid in ERC-20 tokens, custom validation, and bundled operations; these are capabilities of the design, not guarantees that every wallet, network, or service supports every option.

What fee sponsorship changes operationally

Sponsorship can remove the need for a new user or agent to hold ETH for every transaction, but it moves fee management to the paymaster or sponsoring service. That operator needs funding, rules about which operations it accepts, and monitoring for unexpected usage. Bundlers and paymasters are infrastructure dependencies, not permissions that make an agent’s spending safe by themselves.

Ethereum.org’s account-abstraction overview, last updated October 1, 2026, reports more than 26 million smart wallets and more than 170 million UserOperations. Those are figures reported by ethereum.org for the account-abstraction ecosystem; they do not establish how many wallets or operations belong to AI agents, or provide a direct comparison with Cardano.

How can an AI agent pay on Cardano?

x402 for HTTP services

Cardano’s official agent-commerce documentation describes an x402 flow for paying for a service request: the service responds with HTTP 402 Payment Required and payment terms, the client pays on-chain, then retries the request with proof of payment. The documented payment choices are a direct address payment, Masumi escrow, or a custom contract chosen by the seller. This is a documented integration pattern; an individual service still has to implement the payment terms and verification.

The same Cardano page says a hosted facilitator URL would be published later. That is a deployment detail to verify with the current service or implementation before building against a hosted facilitator; the documentation does not establish that such a hosted endpoint is available.

Masumi for agent-job workflows

Cardano’s agent documentation describes Masumi as an agent-economy layer covering payments, identity, traceability, and discovery. Its escrow option is intended for funds held against job terms, rather than a simple direct payment for each request. These documented components can be relevant when a buyer and agent need a defined job-and-payment workflow. Documentation of a feature is not evidence of broad production adoption, transaction volume, or independently measured reliability.

How should an agent’s spending authority be designed?

Payment settlement answers where funds go; authorization determines what the agent is allowed to do. An autonomous agent with access to signing authority can act within that authority, so wallet design and key custody deserve the same attention as the chain choice.

Autonomous signing

If an agent can sign transactions, define its permitted assets, destinations, and spending limits in the wallet or surrounding system where possible. Protect the keys, monitor activity, and plan how to halt or recover the system if credentials are exposed or behavior goes wrong. The protocols described here provide payment and validation mechanisms, not a comparative security audit or a guarantee against loss.

Human-reviewed transaction drafting

Cardano’s official overview also describes an MCP pattern in which an agent can read chain data or draft a transaction, while a user reviews and signs it through a wallet. In that arrangement, the model or server need not hold the signing key. It is a distinct, human-in-the-loop interaction—not an inherent property of every Cardano agent tool, and not equivalent to a fully autonomous wallet.

Review what the wallet will sign

Cardano’s contract guide notes that a transaction can be evaluated before signing and recommends checking the transaction and using audited, public-code applications. Pre-signing evaluation does not make a malicious transaction harmless: the signer should inspect the actual inputs, outputs, and requested actions rather than rely on the fact that a script was evaluated.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
  • How is state represented? Choose an eUTxO design if the application’s state and transitions fit naturally into discrete outputs and transaction-carried data. An account-based design may fit better if the application depends on familiar EVM contracts and shared mutable storage.
  • Will operations compete for the same state? Independent payments may behave differently from jobs that repeatedly update shared state or try to spend the same input. Model likely contention and transaction failures explicitly.
  • What does a payment need to guarantee? A direct per-request payment, escrow against job terms, refunds, dispute handling, identity, and discovery are different requirements. Confirm that the selected implementation actually supplies the workflow you need.
  • Who signs? Decide whether the agent may spend autonomously or only draft a transaction for human approval. Set key custody, limits, monitoring, and recovery procedures accordingly.
  • Who pays network fees? If onboarding depends on sponsorship or token-denominated fees, check support on the chosen network and wallet, and account for the service responsible for funding and enforcing sponsorship.
  • What do users already support? Identify required networks, stablecoins, wallets, APIs, and developer SDKs before committing to an architecture.

Can you compare speed, fees, or reliability?

There is no established apples-to-apples performance result here for AI-agent payments on Cardano versus Ethereum. The consulted platform documentation and standard describe capabilities, not a controlled comparison of end-to-end latency, all-in cost, throughput, inclusion success, or failure rates. Network, token, transaction shape, wallet setup, payment facilitator, and workload can all affect the result.

For a real decision, benchmark the same representative workflow on each candidate implementation. Measure the full path—from the agent’s request through payment, inclusion, verification, and service response—at the expected volume. Record failed and retried transactions, total fees and service charges, and the effect of concurrent requests. Do not treat general network transaction counts or ecosystem wallet totals as evidence of AI-agent adoption or as a substitute for that test.
