Announced by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) on 5 October 2026, it is described as Scotland’s first saltmarsh flux tower and the most northerly site in a UK coastal monitoring network. Its measurements are intended to improve understanding of saltmarsh carbon storage—not to establish a carbon balance for Caerlaverock yet.
What the tower measures
The gas flux tower records carbon exchange between the saltmarsh and the atmosphere in real time. In practical terms, it helps researchers track whether and when the ecosystem is taking up or releasing carbon dioxide. The installation announcement does not specify the tower model, sensors, gas species measured, or sampling intervals.
A tower’s readings are measurements of exchange at its site and over time. They are not, by themselves, a final estimate of a habitat’s long-term net climate effect. That assessment requires data spanning changing seasons and conditions, and comparisons across locations.
How saltmarsh can affect carbon
Saltmarsh plants absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Tides also bring carbon-rich sediment and organic matter, which can become trapped among plants’ roots and stems. These processes can store carbon in the habitat.

The balance is not automatically positive: when saltmarsh becomes unstable and sediment erodes, greenhouse gases produced in the soil may be released at enhanced rates. The net effect depends on what is taken up, deposited, stored, or released over time, which is why researchers need continuing measurements rather than a single snapshot.
Where Caerlaverock fits in the monitoring network
Caerlaverock is on the Solway Firth, on Scotland’s southwest coast. UKCEH describes the new tower as the most northerly addition to a network of flux towers around the UK coast. The project is a partnership involving UKCEH, the Scottish Government, NatureScot, and WWF-UK. Funding from the Scottish Government, NatureScot, and WWF-UK, with support from Postcode Lottery players, made it possible.

Greenhouse-gas fluxes vary from place to place and over time, UKCEH says. A northern site therefore adds evidence to a wider monitoring effort; it should not be treated as a definitive result for all UK saltmarshes.
What existing figures say—and what they do not
- UK saltmarsh loss: UKCEH estimated in 2025 that about 85% of UK saltmarsh has been lost since the mid-19th century. It attributes losses to land reclamation for agriculture, development and coastal defences, pollution, and climate change. This is a UK-wide estimate, not a measurement of loss at Caerlaverock. - Estimated sink potential: In a 2026 overview, UKCEH put the potential net carbon sink of natural UK saltmarshes at 6.5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per hectare per year. This is an estimate for natural UK saltmarshes, not a result measured by the Caerlaverock tower. UKCEH’s blue-carbon overview.
- Ribble Estuary measurements: One year of tower data from the Ribble Estuary in Lancashire found that spring and summer CO₂ uptake exceeded autumn and winter release. That finding belongs to the Ribble site and does not establish Caerlaverock’s seasonal or annual balance. UKCEH’s 2025 overview.
Why the data may matter for UK climate accounting
UKCEH’s January 2026 overview said saltmarsh was not then included in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector of the UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory. The Caerlaverock measurements are intended to build evidence that could inform possible future inclusion. The installation announcement does not report an adopted policy change or say that saltmarsh is already included.

NatureScot Coastal Habitats Adviser Corallie Hunt described the installation as a milestone for environmental research and a priority in Scotland’s Blue Carbon Action Plan. UKCEH wetland scientist Annette Burden said data from the tower could help explain saltmarsh’s role in climate mitigation and provide evidence relevant to inventory treatment. Those are the project’s aims, not findings from completed Caerlaverock measurements.

The announcement does not provide a Caerlaverock carbon-balance result or an expected date for first results. It also does not identify technical specifications or the tower’s measurement schedule. Until measurements are reported, claims about how much carbon this particular saltmarsh stores or releases would go beyond the available evidence.
