Capitol Records’ reported signing of FN Meka in August 2022 was short-lived: Capitol Music Group said it had severed ties with the project effective immediately after criticism of its content. FN Meka was presented as a virtual, AI-powered rapper, but reporting said a human studio musician performed the vocals.
What happened with FN Meka and Capitol Records?
On August 23, 2022, Futurism reported that Capitol Records had added FN Meka to its lineup. The project’s single “Florida Water,” featuring Gunna, was part of the announcement. Contemporary coverage associated FN Meka with Factory New and described it as a virtual celebrity and AI-powered rapper.
The arrangement did not last. A report by chorus.fm, quoting a statement attributed to Capitol Music Group, said the company had “severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately.” That is the reported outcome; the available accounts do not establish contract terms or provide a direct copy of a signed agreement.
What did “AI rapper” mean in this case?
Futurism reported that FN Meka’s creators said the music was based on AI, from lyrics to chord progressions. The same reporting said the vocals were performed by a human studio musician. Those are distinct contributions: the project was described as AI-based, but the evidence reported does not support saying that an AI system itself performed the vocal.

The reporting did not provide technical documentation showing which systems were used, how much material they generated, or how the creators edited and produced the final track. The extent of AI’s role should therefore be treated as the creators’ account, not as independently verified technical detail.
Why did the project draw criticism?
In its August 24, 2022 coverage, The FADER reported criticism of earlier FN Meka content, including the use of a racial slur and imagery that critics said trivialized incarceration and police brutality. These were criticisms directed at specific material and its presentation, rather than a technical objection to AI music in general.

The controversy matters because a virtual persona is still a creative and commercial choice made by people and organizations. Generative tools do not remove the responsibility to consider the language, imagery, cultural references, and audience impact attached to a project.
What did the project’s creator say about making artists with AI?
Anthony Martini, co-founder of Factory New, told Futurism that “the old model of finding talent is inefficient and unreliable.” He also said, “Now we can literally custom-create artists using elements proven to work,” and argued that a 2% success rate would double what he called the industry standard.

Those remarks express Martini’s view of talent development and commercial strategy. The cited reporting does not independently verify the claimed industry standard or establish that custom-created virtual artists reliably succeed.

FN Meka is a dated example of a virtual music project described as AI-powered, a major-label signing reported in August 2022, and a rapid separation after public criticism. It does not establish the present status of the project, Capitol’s current relationship to it, or a general trend in how labels sign AI-made artists.

When assessing other virtual or AI-assisted music projects, useful questions include who wrote and produced the music, who performed the vocals, how clearly the creators disclose AI’s role, what cultural references shape the persona, and how listeners and collaborators respond. The FN Meka coverage does not provide a basis for ranking current AI music tools or systems.
