Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Windows 11 can reject a Microsoft account sign-in for several reasons: you may be using the wrong sign-in method, Windows may need an internet connection or verification, or it may be unable to load your user profile. First identify whether the problem is at the Windows lock screen, while adding an account inside Windows, or in one app or service.
The steps below distinguish a Windows Hello PIN from your Microsoft account password and cover each type of sign-in problem.
1. Try the correct sign-in method at the Windows lock screen
At the lock screen, select your account, then select Sign-in options. Choose the method you want to use:
- Select the password icon and enter your Microsoft account password.
- Select the PIN icon and enter your Windows Hello PIN.
- If configured, use face recognition, a fingerprint, or a security key.
Your Windows Hello PIN is not the same as your Microsoft account password. The PIN is specific to the device, while the password is used with your Microsoft account and services. See Microsoft’s guide to user account access in Windows.

The password option is missing
Windows 11 can intentionally remove password sign-in. If you can sign in through another administrator account, check:
Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings
Turn off For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device, then check Sign-in options at the lock screen again. If this is a managed work computer, an administrator may control the setting. A missing password icon does not mean Microsoft deleted your account.
A Windows 11 issue with an invisible password icon
Microsoft documented an issue primarily affecting managed or enterprise Windows 11 installations after the August 2025 preview update KB5064081. The password icon could be invisible even though its button was still present. Hover over the blank area in Sign-in options and select it to open the password field.
Microsoft says the issue was addressed by KB5074105 and later updates. It was considered very unlikely on personal Windows 11 Home and Pro computers. See Microsoft’s January 13, 2026 update notes.
2. Reset a forgotten or broken PIN
If Windows rejects the PIN, select I forgot my PIN below the PIN box and follow the identity-verification prompts. Select the correct Microsoft account if Windows lists more than one, then create a new PIN. This option is available for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts.
If the link is missing:
- Select Sign-in options.
- Select Enter your password.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account password.
- After reaching the desktop, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Select PIN (Windows Hello) > I forgot my PIN and complete the reset.
To change a PIN you still know, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello) > Change PIN and enter the existing PIN. This changes only the device PIN, not your Microsoft account password. See Microsoft’s guide to changing or resetting a PIN.
3. Check the Microsoft account password and username
If Windows rejects the password, make sure you are entering the Microsoft account password rather than the PIN. Check Caps Lock, keyboard layout, and the account name.

- The spelling of the email address.
- The domain, such as outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, or a country-specific domain.
- That you are using the intended account, not another Microsoft account.
- Whether a phone number or alternate email address is another alias for the account.
If you forgot the password, select I forgot my password at the sign-in screen. Depending on the screen, you may also be able to select Sign-in options > Web sign-in and follow the prompts. You can reset the password from another device using Microsoft’s password-reset page.
If a password that used to work is no longer accepted, use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper. It checks issues such as:
- A username or password that has stopped working.
- “We couldn’t find an account with that username.”
- “That Microsoft account doesn’t exist.”
- Uncertainty about which email address or alias belongs to the account.
An account unused for more than two years may have been deleted under Microsoft’s inactivity policy and cannot be reopened. See the Microsoft account activity policy.
4. Connect Windows 11 to the internet at the sign-in screen
Internet access may be needed after a password change, account recovery, identity verification, or another account-security event. To connect before signing in:
- Select the Network, Sound, or Battery area in the lower-right corner of the lock screen.
- Open the available network controls.
- Select your Wi-Fi network.
- Select Connect.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password if requested.
A connected Wi-Fi icon does not guarantee Microsoft sign-in servers are reachable. VPNs, proxies, DNS filtering, firewalls, captive portals, and company network policies can interrupt authentication. If possible, try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, and temporarily disconnect a VPN.
After signing in, Windows 11’s Wi-Fi controls are at Network, Sound, or Battery icons > Manage Wi-Fi connections. For broader connection problems, open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Status > Network troubleshooter. See Microsoft’s guides to connecting to Wi-Fi and fixing Wi-Fi connection issues.
5. Fix verification-code problems
If Microsoft asks for a code that never arrives, check the account’s aliases and approved verification methods. Common causes include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The email went to junk or was sent to a different alias.
- The phone blocks messages from unknown numbers or its SMS inbox is full.
- The number is a VoIP number, which cannot be used for Microsoft sign-in or verification codes.
- Microsoft temporarily limited delivery because of unusual activity or too many requests.
- Microsoft Authenticator is still registered on an old phone.
Legitimate Microsoft verification emails come from an address ending in @accountprotection.microsoft.com. Do not repeatedly request codes using different addresses or phone numbers; excessive requests can temporarily block delivery. See Microsoft’s verification-code troubleshooting guide.
If you replaced your phone, check the old device for the Authenticator approval. If that is impossible, choose another verification method if available, or remove the old method after recovering the account.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Be careful with I don’t have any of these. Replacing all security information can create a 30-day restriction before sign-in is allowed. Using the original security information during that period cancels the replacement process.
6. Unlock a locked Microsoft account
If Microsoft explicitly says the account is locked, go to account.microsoft.com and request a security code. Enter the code and create a new password if Microsoft prompts you.
The phone number used for the unlock code does not have to belong to the account; it only needs to receive text messages. The code expires after 10 minutes. See Microsoft’s locked-account instructions.
If the page does not show a Next button and instead provides an aka.ms reinstatement link, follow that process. This may indicate a lock related to suspicious activity or a terms-of-service issue. Repeatedly entering the old password will not resolve it.
7. Recover a temporary Windows profile
The message “We can’t sign in to your account” does not necessarily mean the Microsoft account password is wrong. Windows may have loaded a temporary profile because it could not load the original user profile.
Do not create or edit important files in that temporary session. Microsoft warns that files changed there can be lost when you sign out. Copy anything important to an external drive before restarting.

- Start Windows in Safe Mode.
- Sign in with the original profile.
- Check whether your normal desktop settings and files have returned.
- Restart normally and try the account again.
A normal restart may be required more than once. See Microsoft’s temporary-profile recovery guidance.
Start Safe Mode from Windows Recovery Environment
Open Windows Recovery Environment, then select:
Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart
At the Startup Settings screen, choose:
| Key | Mode |
|---|---|
| 4 or F4 | Safe Mode |
| 5 or F5 | Safe Mode with Networking |

8. Repair Windows system files
Use DISM and System File Checker if the account works elsewhere but Windows sign-in or profile loading remains damaged.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the following command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
When DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. These commands repair Windows component and protected system-file corruption; they cannot recover a forgotten Microsoft account password or bypass account security. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guide.
9. If the account works in a browser but not in Windows
Try signing in to the Microsoft account from another device or browser. The result helps separate account problems from Windows problems:
| Browser result | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Sign-in also fails | Password, alias, verification method, account lock, or recovery problem |
| Sign-in works | Windows Hello, a damaged local profile, cached credentials, network policy, or a Windows component |
For an individual app, sign out and back in only after confirming the account works in a browser. Problems with Edge and other Microsoft applications can involve cached credentials, the Token Broker service, operating-system settings, firewall rules, network configuration, or policy restrictions. See Microsoft’s Edge sign-in troubleshooting.
10. Add a Microsoft account inside Windows
If you are signed in to Windows with a local account, open:
Settings > Accounts > Your info > Sign in with a Microsoft account instead
Follow the prompts, select Next, then choose Sign out and finish when asked.
This link appears only for a local Windows account. If it is missing, the current account may already be a Microsoft account or the computer may be managed with a different account configuration. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing from a local account to a Microsoft account.

Work and school accounts use a different recovery process
An account ending in a company or school domain may be managed by Microsoft Entra ID and the organization’s IT department. It is not recovered in the same way as a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com account.
For a work or school account, use the organization’s password-reset process or contact its IT administrator. If available, review sign-in failures through My Sign-ins. See Microsoft’s guidance on viewing work or school sign-in activity.
FAQ
Why does Windows 11 reject my Microsoft account password when it is correct?
Windows may be using the PIN sign-in method, may be offline after a password change, or may be unable to load your normal profile. Select Sign-in options, choose the password icon, connect to the internet, and test the account in a browser.
Is a Windows Hello PIN the same as a Microsoft account password?
No. The PIN is a device-specific Windows Hello credential. Resetting it does not reset or change the Microsoft account password.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is there no password option on the Windows 11 lock screen?
The setting at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings may allow only Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts. Turn it off from another administrator account if you need password sign-in.
What should I do if the Microsoft verification code does not arrive?
Check every account alias, the junk-mail folder, your phone’s blocked messages, and the old phone registered with Microsoft Authenticator. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes because delivery can be temporarily blocked.
Does “We can’t sign in to your account” mean my Microsoft password is wrong?
Not necessarily. Windows may have loaded a temporary profile because it could not load your normal profile. Back up files created in that session, restart in Safe Mode, sign in with the original profile, and restart normally.
Can Microsoft Support bypass the account recovery process?
No. Microsoft’s account-recovery guidance says support agents cannot send password-reset links or access and change account details to bypass account-protection procedures. See Microsoft’s sign-in recovery guidance.

The Bottom Line
Start by separating a Windows lock-screen problem from an app or account problem. At the lock screen, use Sign-in options to choose the password instead of the PIN, connect Windows to the internet, and reset the PIN or password through the appropriate Microsoft recovery process. If browser sign-in works but Windows does not, investigate Windows Hello, the local profile, network policies, and system-file corruption. For a work or school account, involve the organization’s administrator rather than using personal-account recovery.
