TELUS later reported that the companies transferred quantum information over 30 kilometres of its installed commercial fibre in a February 2026 quantum teleportation demonstration. Both are research milestones announced by the companies—not a consumer quantum internet service.
What Photonic is testing over TELUS fibre
On October 28, 2024, TELUS announced that it would give Photonic dedicated access to a 30-kilometre fibre network in British Columbia. TELUS said the route was connected to its national network and would let Photonic test increasingly complex quantum networking and explore possible real-world applications. TELUS’ 2024 announcement
The arrangement is a company-to-company research collaboration: Photonic supplies the quantum technology, while TELUS supplies access to fibre infrastructure. Potential applications mentioned by TELUS included quantum key distribution and secure communications. They were areas under development, not services made available to TELUS customers.
Why use fibre?
Quantum networking research seeks to connect quantum systems at separate nodes and transfer quantum information between them. Testing over fibre lets researchers investigate how quantum signals behave across real network infrastructure rather than only within a small, isolated setup. TELUS described the original route as dedicated access for testing; that does not mean the entire national network was converted into a quantum network.

What changed in February 2026
On February 13, 2026, TELUS reported that Photonic and TELUS had transferred quantum information over 30 kilometres of installed commercial TELUS PureFibre network in a quantum teleportation demonstration. The companies called the result a “world-first”; that is their characterization, not an independently adjudicated priority claim. TELUS and Photonic’s 2026 announcement
Here, “quantum teleportation” means transferring quantum information, as described in the companies’ announcement. It does not mean transporting matter or people. The announcement reports a technical demonstration, not a retail product or a schedule for commercial deployment.

What the milestones do—and do not—establish
The 2024 access arrangement established an opportunity to test quantum networking over a dedicated fibre route. The 2026 announcement added a reported demonstration over installed commercial fibre. These are distinct steps: access to infrastructure is not itself a completed transmission result, and a demonstration does not establish that the technology is ready for routine customer use.
- Established by the announcements: TELUS provided Photonic access to a 30-kilometre British Columbia route for testing, and the companies later reported a 30-kilometre quantum teleportation demonstration over installed PureFibre.
- Not established: that home subscribers receive quantum encryption, that quantum communications are deployed nationwide, or when a commercial service might become available.
- Validation: the cited milestone is company-reported. The available sources do not provide independent technical validation of the “world-first” claim.
Engineering challenges in sending quantum signals
In an EE Times interview, TELUS principal technology architect Rainer Iraschko described a challenge involving erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, which are important in long-range optical fibre communications. He said entangled photons could not be transmitted through those amplifiers. This is a reported engineering issue from the interview, not evidence that every fibre route or quantum-network design faces an identical universal limit.

Iraschko said TELUS had spare fibre available and was willing to loan it to Photonic for development and testing. The company’s choice to provide a dedicated route illustrates one practical way to let researchers experiment without presenting the work as a service already running for ordinary subscribers.
