Yes. You can use an external SSD to store a video that OBS loops while it sends the stream to YouTube Live. The SSD is only the file’s storage: your computer, OBS, the connected drive and a reliable internet connection still need to stay available throughout the broadcast. OBS documents playback from local media files, though its documentation does not specifically certify external-SSD playback, so test your own setup before relying on it for a long stream.
How to loop an external-SSD video in OBS
- Connect and mount the SSD. Keep it connected to the computer for the entire stream. Make sure the video file is accessible from the operating system.
- Add the video in OBS. In your scene, add a Media Source and browse to the video file on the SSD. OBS lists local playback support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. The documented workflow covers local media files; it does not specify an SSD model, connection standard or minimum drive speed. OBS: Media Sources
- Turn on looping. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop to replay a single file when playback ends.
- For multiple clips, use a playlist source. Add a VLC Video source, create or select a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for the VLC source to appear in OBS. OBS: Media Sources
- Set up YouTube Live in OBS. Your channel must have livestreaming access. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, set up an encoder stream and enter the stream key and server URL in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or include it in a public recording. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Preview and test before going public. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor both audio and video. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate for upload bandwidth; this is YouTube’s operational recommendation, not an SSD specification. What the SSD does—and what it does not do
The SSD supplies the media file. OBS and the computer read and play that file, encode the scene, and send the stream over the network to YouTube. The drive does not host or transmit the broadcast by itself. For this reason, the computer must remain powered, OBS must remain open, the SSD must stay accessible, and the network connection must hold.
There is no published SSD speed or capacity threshold in the cited OBS and YouTube guidance for this particular workflow. Choose a drive that can hold your media and connect to your computer, then test the exact file, port and setup. An external SSD is not a guarantee against interrupted playback or a dropped stream.
Which looping setup fits your content?
| Setup | What repeats | What must stay available | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local file | Computer, OBS, accessible SSD and network | A single video you want to replay |
| OBS VLC Video source | A playlist of local files | Computer, OBS, VLC, accessible files and network | Several clips in a chosen sequence |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Uploaded prerecorded videos or a playlist | StreamNeo account and configuration, plus network access for setup | A YouTube stream that should keep running without a home computer |
YouTube’s official encoder directory includes a cloud service category for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but a category listing alone does not establish the terms or suitability of a particular service. YouTube Live streaming tools and services

Check YouTube rights and stream health
Looping a file does not change whether you have the rights to stream its audio and video. Before broadcasting, confirm that you are entitled to use every part of the recording, including music, footage and other incorporated material. A successful technical setup is not permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream health; keep a local archive where appropriate so you can verify what was sent. Troubleshooting an SSD-based loop
- The video does not appear or stops playing: Check that the SSD is mounted and the file path still resolves. Re-select the file in OBS if its drive letter or mount point changed.
- The video ends instead of restarting: Reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that livestreaming is enabled for the channel, the encoder is configured with the correct server URL and stream key, and OBS is connected. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems: Check the upload connection and reduce competing network use. Compare available upload bandwidth with the total stream bitrate, leaving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Test the stream in the preview before making it public.
- The picture or audio is wrong: Monitor the preview and OBS output with the actual file before a long broadcast. The official local-media guidance does not promise that every file and computer combination will behave identically.
