It is not locating itself from Earth’s magnetic field alone: the map must be prepared in advance, and walking sensors can help resolve ambiguous readings and track movement.
How magnetic indoor positioning works
A smartphone’s built-in magnetometer measures the magnetic field around it. Steel, concrete, and other building materials can distort the local geomagnetic field, creating patterns that vary from place to place. A positioning system records those patterns across a building and uses them as a magnetic map.
During navigation, the phone takes new readings and compares them with the mapped patterns to estimate where it is. The map is specific to the building; the phone does not independently recognize its location anywhere simply by sensing Earth’s field. The cited systems use built-in phone sensors rather than requiring a separate magnetic beacon, but they do require that advance mapping.
Why movement data helps
A single magnetic reading may match more than one location. Systems can compare a sequence of readings collected while someone walks and combine those observations with motion estimates from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. This pedestrian dead reckoning helps track a path between magnetic matches, rather than treating every reading as a definitive location.

What accuracy have studies reported?
Published results depend on the system, mapped building, test conditions, and error measure. These figures show experimental feasibility, not guaranteed accuracy for a phone or building you choose.

The 2012 accuracy statement and the 2018 RMS error results come from different studies and evaluation settings, so they are not a head-to-head comparison or a ranking of systems. RMS error is a study metric; it should not be read as a promise that every position estimate will fall within that distance.

What would it take to use this in a building?
The building needs a magnetic map made before the system can match a visitor’s readings. The cited work demonstrates mapped-building prototypes; it does not establish a universal, ready-to-use map covering indoor spaces, widespread commercial availability, or compatibility across current phone models.
Kim and colleagues described their 2012 approach as needing no physical infrastructure and therefore being possible to realize at low cost. That means it can avoid installed positioning beacons in the system they described; it does not remove the need to create a building-specific magnetic map.

Is it really “just like a pigeon”?
Only in the broad sense that both the engineering technique and pigeon-navigation research involve Earth’s magnetic field as a possible source of spatial information. A smartphone uses an electronic sensor and software to match readings against a stored building map. Pigeons have biological navigation mechanisms that researchers continue to investigate; there is no basis here for saying that a pigeon reads a building-like magnetic fingerprint or that a phone reproduces pigeon magnetoreception.
A 2022 review notes that testing magnetic navigation in pigeons is difficult because other cues—including visual landmarks, the sun compass, and olfactory information—can outweigh magnetic cues. The precise role and sensory mechanism remain debated. In a 2004 research letter, Mora and colleagues observed: “Although magnetic effects on pigeon orientation provide indirect evidence for a magnetic ‘map’, numerous conditioning experiments have failed to demonstrate reproducible responses to magnetic fields by pigeons.” That is a historically situated statement, not a summary of every later finding.

Can your phone find you indoors right now?
Not from its compass reading alone. The method described in these studies needs a magnetic map for the building and a positioning system that matches sensor readings to that map. The evidence establishes that this approach can work experimentally in mapped settings; it does not show that a typical phone can provide magnetic indoor navigation in an arbitrary building without that preparation.
