Several kinds of evidence support the presence of neurogenic cell populations in adult human hippocampal tissue. The hard part is distinguishing a cell that looks immature from one that was recently born, matured, and joined a working neural circuit.
Where researchers look for new neurons
The main focus is the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus involved in learning and memory. Adult neurogenesis—the production of new neurons—is well established in many animal studies. In humans, it is harder to measure directly, and the evidence is more qualified.
Researchers are not asking only whether a tissue sample contains cells with features associated with immaturity. They also want to know whether those cells were recently generated, whether they develop into mature neurons, and whether they become functionally integrated. Those are separate claims, and evidence for one does not automatically establish the others.
What the different methods can show

Why studies have reached different conclusions
Two prominent 2018 studies illustrate the disagreement. Sorrells and colleagues reported that markers of neurogenesis fell to negligible levels by childhood. Boldrini and colleagues reported evidence consistent with neurogenesis persisting through adulthood. These results cannot be reduced to a simple contest in which one finding automatically cancels the other: studies may differ in tissue quality, postmortem interval, fixation and staining, marker selection, sample composition, and the biological stage they seek to detect.

A dividing precursor, an immature neuron, and a newly generated neuron that has matured are not interchangeable targets. The more specifically a study identifies its target—and the more its findings are corroborated by independent methods—the easier it is to interpret what the evidence actually establishes.
A 2024 systematic review synthesized 112 papers on hippocampal neurogenesis in adult primates, including humans. It reported repeated observations and a gradual decline with age, while noting that varied outcome measures limited quantitative synthesis. This supports a substantial body of evidence, but not a single settled rate or precise age-related trajectory.

What the newer molecular study adds
A 2026 Nature study analyzed 355,997 nuclei from human hippocampal samples using molecular approaches to examine cell identities and gene-regulatory patterns. The authors reported neural stem cells, neuroblasts, and immature granule neurons in adult samples. They compared young adults, cognitively typical older adults, people with preclinical Alzheimer’s pathology, people with Alzheimer’s disease, and SuperAgers.
The study reported changes in chromatin accessibility in neurogenic cells in preclinical Alzheimer’s pathology, more pronounced changes in Alzheimer’s disease, and a distinct profile in SuperAgers. These are molecular observations in sampled tissue. They do not show that neurogenesis causes memory resilience, prevents Alzheimer’s disease, or can be increased through a consumer intervention. The authors note that “little is known about the fate of neurogenesis in the human brain, let alone its regulatory mechanisms or functional roles in cognition.”

What we can—and cannot—say about memory
Animal research has linked neurogenesis with learning and memory, but those findings do not prove that new neurons have the same cognitive effects in people. The human studies described here are primarily evidence about cell birth, cell states, and molecular profiles; they do not establish that making more neurons improves an individual’s memory.
Nor do these findings demonstrate that a particular exercise, supplement, diet, or brain-training product grows neurons in people. A claim about an intervention would require evidence that it changes human neurogenesis, not merely that it affects a related behavior or biological marker.

How to evaluate a claim about adult neurogenesis
- Check the stage measured: Does the study identify dividing precursors, immature neurons, or cells shown to have matured?
- Ask whether it demonstrates birth or a cell state: A marker or gene-expression profile may be consistent with immaturity without proving recent cell birth.
- Look at tissue and methods: Postmortem interval, preservation, staining, marker specificity, and sampling can influence results.
- Consider the sample: Note its size, age range, and whether its participants represent the group named in the claim.
- Look for corroboration: Findings supported by different methods are more informative than a single marker or analysis alone.
- Separate cell evidence from cognitive claims: Detecting a neurogenic cell population does not establish a benefit to memory or a treatment effect.
