Yes. You can use one WhatsApp account on two smartphones at the same time by linking the second phone as a companion device. Start the link from WhatsApp on your primary phone and scan the QR code shown on the second phone. Don’t register the shared number as a new primary account on the second phone—that moves or re-verifies the account rather than keeping both phones active.
How to link a second smartphone
- Install or update the official WhatsApp app on both phones.
- On the second phone, open WhatsApp and choose the companion-device linking option. It should display a QR code. Do not finish registering the shared number as a new account.
- On the primary phone, open Linked devices. On Android, find it in the menu; on iPhone, open Settings and tap Linked devices.
- Tap Link a device on the primary phone and confirm your identity if WhatsApp asks.
- Use the primary phone to scan the QR code on the second phone.
- After pairing, return to Linked devices and check that the new phone appears. Log out devices you do not recognize or no longer use.
WhatsApp’s official device-linking instructions describe identity confirmation when prompted and scanning the QR code. WhatsApp also documents linking by phone number and a one-time code, but its instructions cover WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows; that is a different flow from linking a second smartphone.
What to expect from a linked phone
Device limit and primary-phone activity
An account can have up to four linked devices, according to WhatsApp’s About linked devices guidance. The primary phone does not need to stay online continuously. However, WhatsApp says it will disconnect linked devices if the primary phone is unused for more than 14 days. It also says linked devices are automatically disconnected after 30 days of inactivity on those devices. These are WhatsApp service rules, not independently measured performance figures.
Chat history and unavailable features
Some linked devices may not show chat history going back a full year. WhatsApp identifies this as a known issue and advises checking the primary device for older history; availability may change as the service updates. WhatsApp also lists live-location viewing, creating or viewing broadcast lists, and interacting with businesses through WhatsApp Flows among features that are not supported on linked devices.

Encryption and account safety
WhatsApp says messages, media, and calls remain end-to-end encrypted on linked devices, and each linked device connects independently. Use only the official WhatsApp app and linking screens, review Linked devices periodically, and log out any device you do not recognize. WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps or websites can compromise an account or lead to a ban.
Linking is different from moving your account
A WhatsApp account is verified with one registered phone number; it is associated with the number, not a particular SIM card or SIM slot. Registering or transferring that number to another primary phone is not the procedure for keeping the account active on two phones simultaneously. WhatsApp warns that frequently switching an account between devices can eventually prevent re-verification. Use the companion-device flow when you want both smartphones connected to the same account.
