Usually, not as a drop-in internal drive. An internal M.2 SSD must match each handheld’s size and interface. A removable microSD card is the more practical shared-storage option on supported devices, but moving the card does not guarantee that every game or launcher will recognize and run its library. An external USB-C SSD is a third option, but it connects as a peripheral rather than fitting inside the console.
First, which kind of “SSD” do you mean?
People use “expansion SSD” to describe three different things: an internal M.2 drive, a removable microSD card used for game storage, or an external SSD connected over USB-C. They have different compatibility rules. In particular, a microSD card is flash storage, but it is not an M.2 SSD.
- Internal M.2 SSD: check the exact drive dimensions and interface for every handheld. A drive that fits one model may not fit another.
- microSD card: can be physically moved between devices with compatible readers, but formatting and game-library recognition still matter.
- External USB-C SSD: avoids opening the handheld, but requires a suitable port, cable or enclosure, and compatible operating-system and launcher setup.
What each handheld documents

Can you move an internal M.2 SSD between handhelds?
Only if the target device supports the drive’s physical size and interface—and even then, a physical fit does not establish that the operating system or existing installation will work. Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 guide specifies a single PCIe Gen4 M.2 slot for 2242 or 2280 drives. That specification applies to the Legion Go 2, not automatically to a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or other model.
Before opening either handheld, check the official specifications and maintenance guidance for both exact models. Compare the M.2 form factor and interface, and check installation requirements. Removing or installing a drive is a hardware change, not a casual way to transfer a game card; operating-system recovery or reinstallation may be needed, and the cited device guidance does not establish a universal procedure.

Can you reuse one microSD card?
Physically, a microSD card can move between these examples because Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go 2 each document microSD support. That does not mean the same card and game library will work identically on all three. The receiving operating system and game launcher must be able to use the card and recognize the installed games.
Steam Deck formatting and existing data
Valve says, “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” Steam Deck requires formatting a card for use through its storage settings. If the card contains files you want to keep, back them up before formatting: formatting can erase the data. A card already formatted for one device may therefore need to be reformatted, which can prevent direct reuse of its existing contents.

What the Steam Machine example does—and does not—show
Valve gives a specific portability example: “If you’ve previously used a microSD card for Library storage with a Steam Deck, you should be able to use that card with your Steam Machine and play the installed games without performing any additional steps.” This supports reuse between those two Steam devices for installed games. It does not establish the same result for a Windows handheld, another operating system, or a non-Steam launcher.

An external SSD connects to the handheld rather than occupying its internal M.2 slot. It can be useful when the device is stationary or docked, but portability involves carrying and connecting the drive, and game access still depends on the operating system and launcher. Confirm the specific handheld supports the intended drive setup. Lenovo lists USB-C ports for Legion Go 2 and notes that transfer rates vary with the host, peripheral, files, configuration, and environment; that is not a guaranteed speed for every external SSD or handheld.

Check compatibility before moving or buying storage
- Identify the storage type. Determine whether you have an internal M.2 drive, a microSD card, or an external USB-C SSD.
- Check the target handheld’s official specifications. For M.2, compare the precise form factor and interface. For microSD, confirm the reader and card support.
- Protect your files. Back up a microSD card before formatting it, especially if you are moving it to a device that requires its own format.
- Check the game setup separately. Confirm that the target operating system and launcher can recognize the library; card support alone does not promise that installed games will launch.
- For external storage, check the whole connection. Verify the USB-C port, cable or enclosure, and intended launcher use, and account for the drive being physically attached.
