Open-source tools can take a design through synthesis and place-and-route to a bitstream for some commercially sold FPGAs, including documented flows for Lattice iCE40 and ECP5. Support is not universal: check the exact device, board, and features your project needs before choosing a toolchain.
Which commercial FPGA families have documented open-source support?
F4PGA describes itself as an open-source HDL-to-bitstream solution and documents targets that include Xilinx 7-Series, QuickLogic EOS-S3, Lattice iCE40, and ECP5. That list is bounded: it does not establish support for every device in those families, newer generations, or other vendors’ chips. Check the current project documentation and device support for your exact part.
A 2019 paper describing the Yosys and nextpnr framework reports support for commercially available Lattice iCE40 and ECP5 devices. It also reports hardware-proven example designs, including a low-power neural-network accelerator and an OpenRISC system-on-chip capable of booting Linux. Those examples show that open-source flows can produce working results on real chips; they do not guarantee that a different design will meet your timing, IP, or production requirements.
F4PGA’s documentation describes its target families at the F4PGA project site. The device support and databases are project-specific and may change. The Yosys+nextpnr paper is available at arXiv.

What does “open-source FPGA tools” mean?
A complete FPGA design flow can involve HDL synthesis, place-and-route, bitstream generation, device programming, and vendor-specific IP or hard blocks. A toolchain may cover some or most of those stages for supported parts, but an open-source tool or platform layer does not make every component of a vendor’s implementation flow open source.
For example, Altera’s Open FPGA Stack is open-source hardware and software infrastructure for custom acceleration platforms using Stratix 10 and Agilex devices. That is a distinct claim from saying that the complete vendor implementation suite for those devices is open source. See Altera’s Open FPGA Stack description for its scope.

GOWIN’s RISC-V support page describes an integrated software and FPGA hardware design flow, including synthesis and place-and-route, for GW2A-18/55 devices. It directs users to register to download GOWIN EDA and apply for an FPGA design license. That is vendor-tool availability, not evidence of an open-source third-party flow for those devices. Details are on GOWIN’s support page.
Are vendor FPGA tools free, or do you need a license?
“Free” and “open source” are separate questions. Vendor tools may have no-cost editions with device or feature limits, while particular IP or software capabilities can have separate licensing terms.

- Altera: Its version 25.3 licensing guide says Quartus Prime Lite is free and requires no license. It says most Altera FPGA software requires a license; the guide’s stated Quartus Prime Pro Edition exception applies only to Cyclone 10 GX devices. It also says Questa Altera FPGA Starter Edition is free but requires zero-cost licenses. Check the current terms for your edition and target in Altera’s 25.3 licensing guide.
- Edition and device limits: Altera’s tool comparison lists Vivado WebPACK and Quartus Prime Lite as editions that do not require a license, with limited device and feature support. Use the mapping in Altera’s tool comparison rather than assuming a no-cost edition supports your chip.
- AMD tools and IP: AMD’s licensing FAQ describes product entitlements, version limits, and licensing for particular IP. It notes that some no-fee IP licenses do not expire, but that does not remove the stated conditions for licensed IP and tool versions. Check the relevant terms in AMD’s licensing FAQ.
How to choose an open-source flow and board
Choose the toolchain based on the exact chip and project requirements, then select a board that fits that flow. ECP5 is a plausible starting point for investigating an open-source hardware experiment because both F4PGA and the Yosys+nextpnr paper document it. That does not establish compatibility for every ECP5 board or revision.
- Identify the exact part. Record the FPGA family and full part number from the board specifications; a similar family name is not enough.
- Check the flow’s current device support. Confirm that the exact part—not merely the broader family—is supported by the relevant synthesis, place-and-route, and bitstream tools.
- Check board-specific requirements. Review constraints, pin assignments, clocking, memory, and any vendor-specific hard IP the design uses.
- Confirm programming support. Find out how the board is programmed and whether the required programmer interface works with your intended workflow.
- Match the flow to the project. If you need particular vendor IP, a timing target, or a production support commitment, verify that the open-source flow can meet that need before relying on it.
- Check the vendor-tool fallback. Verify current licensing, device coverage, and version terms for the vendor suite in case you need it for features or debugging.
Before buying, confirm the board revision and programming instructions as well as the FPGA part. No particular ECP5 board model, listing, stock status, or price is established here.

How to compare open-source and vendor flows
There is no single answer to which approach is better. Compare the specific flows against the work your design must do:
- Device coverage: Is the exact part supported?
- Flow completeness: Can the tools synthesize, place and route, generate a bitstream, and program the board?
- Feature coverage: Are required hard IP, timing features, and design constructs supported?
- Licensing: What are the current edition, device, IP, and version conditions?
- Practical setup: Are your operating system and board programmer supported?
- Project risk: Does the design require vendor support or a production guarantee that the chosen flow does not provide?
The available evidence establishes working open-source examples on specific iCE40 and ECP5 hardware, not a controlled performance comparison across vendors or a general claim of production readiness.
