A Chromebook-specific version of Thunderbird has not been confirmed in the official material reviewed. However, Thunderbird for Android is available, and it may work on a Chromebook that supports Android apps. Whether it will work depends on the Chromebook model.
Is a Chromebook version of Thunderbird coming?
Thunderbird’s public roadmaps list desktop, Android, and iOS clients. The desktop roadmap names Windows, macOS, and Linux—not ChromeOS. A Thunderbird mobile update published July 30, 2026 discusses Android and iOS development, but does not announce a Chromebook-specific release or launch date.
That means the official material reviewed does not confirm a native Chromebook version. It does not establish that Thunderbird will never make one.
Can you run Thunderbird for Android on a Chromebook?
Possibly. Thunderbird for Android reached a stable release in October 2024, so Chromebook owners do not necessarily need to wait for a separate ChromeOS app. A Chromebook that supports Android apps may be able to run the existing Android version.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Android-app support varies by Chromebook. The Chromium Project’s compatibility guidance says devices launched in or after 2019 support Android apps unless otherwise specified, but also cautions that not every Chromebook can receive them. Check the compatibility information for your exact model before relying on this option.
How the two routes differ
| Route | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook-specific Thunderbird | No native Chromebook release or launch date is confirmed in the official material reviewed. | Follow official Thunderbird announcements for any future release. |
| Thunderbird for Android on ChromeOS | The Android app has a stable release, and some Chromebooks support Android apps. | Verify Android-app support for your Chromebook model. The available sources do not establish feature parity with desktop Thunderbird on Chromebooks. |
What this means if you want Thunderbird on your Chromebook
- Identify your Chromebook’s exact model. General statements about Android support are not a guarantee for every device.
- Check that model against the Chromium Project’s Android-app compatibility information. If the device is unsupported or excluded, the Android-app route may not be available.
- Decide whether the Android app meets your needs. The existence of the app does not show that it has the same features as desktop Thunderbird when used on a Chromebook.
A Mozilla Support question from 2014 asked whether Thunderbird would be built for Chromebooks, but that historical discussion is not evidence of current product plans. The current answer should be based on the roadmaps and updates above.
