Preview data handling also needs special care: Mistral’s terms allow training use in certain cases, including Labs or Preview Models, and say other-product settings such as zero data retention do not apply to those models.
What commercial use means for Large 4
There are two distinct routes: using the hosted API and using model weights. The hosted API is available in public preview, identified in Mistral AI Documentation as “Public Preview Open v26.10.” Mistral’s announcement says it planned to release the weights by the end of October 2026; that was a plan, not confirmation of a completed release as of October 7.
For API use, Mistral’s commercial terms grant a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-sublicensable (except to end users) right to access and use Mistral AI Products, subject to the terms and applicable policies. That supports business use of the service within those rules; it is not an unrestricted license to copy, redistribute or operate the model weights.
Mistral’s general licensing guidance says most of its open models use Apache 2.0, while some use modified MIT terms and may have additional commercial-license conditions. It directs users to each model card for the applicable license. That general guidance does not establish Large 4’s weight license. Check the Large 4 model card and license notice once available, particularly before redistributing weights or building a commercial self-hosted service.

Responsibilities when using the API
- You must have the rights and permissions needed for data you submit, and use the service lawfully.
- You are responsible for evaluating outputs for accuracy and suitability before relying on them or sharing them. Mistral does not guarantee that outputs are unique or accurate.
- The terms assign you ownership rights in Customer Data and ownership of Output to the extent permitted by applicable law; Mistral assigns any rights it may have in that Output. This does not override third-party rights or other applicable law.
- The terms restrict certain conduct, including unlawful or infringing use, some attempts to reverse engineer the products, compromising product security, and certain transfers of accounts or API keys.
Which deployment route is available?

For the API, Mistral AI Documentation listed $0.68 per million input tokens, $0.07 per million cached input tokens and $2.09 per million output tokens on October 6, 2026. These are displayed prices from that date, not a guarantee of current or recurring rates; check the live pricing page before budgeting.
To compare hosted use with self-hosting, assess the data boundary and contractual residency, training and retention controls, license and redistribution rights, operational responsibility, service availability and total cost. Large 4-specific weight licensing and hardware requirements were not established in the reviewed documentation, so a reliable self-hosting cost or configuration comparison was not yet possible.

Will Mistral train on your prompts?
Do not assume that Large 4 preview prompts are excluded from training because you selected an opt-out or zero-data-retention preference elsewhere. Mistral’s commercial terms permit training use in specified circumstances, including configured opt-in or default rules, feedback, an order form, or use of Labs or Preview Models. Mistral says inputs and outputs for Labs or Preview Models may be used to train its models, and that preferences for other products—including zero data retention—do not apply to Labs or Preview Models.
The available documentation does not resolve whether every customer’s Large 4 Studio preview is designated a Labs or Preview Model for the account, or how a particular account’s settings apply. Confirm that designation and the governing terms with Mistral before submitting confidential, personal or otherwise sensitive information. Treat the preview as potentially eligible for training unless the applicable contract and product terms establish otherwise.

How other data terms fit in
Mistral’s terms also say it uses customer data and outputs to provide, maintain and optimize its products, including debugging and performance review; that clause excludes model training, which is addressed separately. When Mistral processes personal data on your behalf while you use its infrastructure, the Data Processing Agreement applies. Review the commercial terms, any additional product terms, the DPA and privacy policy, plus partner-served terms where relevant.
If your workflow uses connectors, the data boundary may extend beyond Mistral. Mistral’s additional terms make the customer responsible for third-party connector terms and requested actions, and state that Mistral does not control third-party MCP servers’ processing, routing, storage or transfers. Verify the connector’s own policies and behavior as well as Mistral’s terms.

Is Large 4 open source, and can you self-host it?
Mistral describes Large 4 as an open-weight model and announced that weights were planned for release by the end of October 2026. As of October 7, however, the reviewed model page did not expose the specific weight license or instructions for deploying Large 4. “Open weight” describes access to model parameters; by itself, it does not tell you whether commercial use, modification, redistribution or particular deployment arrangements are permitted.
That means hosted commercial API use and commercial use of downloaded weights must be assessed separately. Before using weights in a product, check the model-specific license for commercial restrictions, attribution or redistribution conditions, and any other obligations. Do not assume that Mistral’s general licensing guidance or the API terms settle those weight-specific rights.

Mistral’s description of European infrastructure concerns its own preview service. It does not establish that every customer’s API request is contractually confined to Europe. For self-hosting, operating the model yourself could give your organization greater control over infrastructure and data handling, but the Large 4-specific deployment recipe and hardware sizing were not stated in the reviewed documentation.
What to check before putting Large 4 into a business workflow
- Choose the route. Decide whether the public-preview API meets your requirements or whether you need to wait for documented weight availability and self-hosting terms.
- Confirm the applicable contract. Review Mistral’s commercial terms and any additional product terms; for partner-served access, identify the intermediary’s terms and responsibilities. Check the DPA if personal data is processed.
- Resolve preview data handling. Ask whether your Large 4 preview is treated as a Labs or Preview Model for your account, whether inputs and outputs may be used for training, and which retention settings apply to that specific service.
- Set data and output controls. Submit only data you are authorized to use, assess connector processing where applicable, and review outputs for accuracy, suitability and third-party rights before operational use.
- For weights, verify the model-specific documents. Confirm the license, redistribution rights and deployment requirements from the Large 4 model card and accompanying terms before committing to a commercial rollout.
- Validate costs and region. Check current API rates and the region and residency commitments that apply to your account rather than relying on a general infrastructure description.
