Sometimes. An APS-C lens can work on a full-frame camera when the mount and the specific body-and-lens combination are compatible. The camera may crop the image to the smaller area the lens is designed to cover, which avoids dark corners but uses fewer sensor pixels. If the camera records the entire full-frame sensor, the lens may not cover the corners. Check the exact camera and lens documentation before relying on the combination.
What APS-C lens compatibility means
APS-C is a smaller sensor format than full frame. A lens projects an image circle, and an APS-C lens is designed to cover a smaller sensor area. A full-frame camera can sometimes use that lens by recording only the center of its sensor, where the lens coverage is sufficient. Using the whole sensor instead can produce vignetting or other image-quality problems at the edges.
Format names are system-specific. Nikon uses DX for its smaller DSLR format and FX for full frame. Sony identifies APS-C E-mount lenses with the E prefix and full-frame E-mount lenses with FE. These labels do not make lenses interchangeable across different brands or mounts.
What happens on documented camera systems
Nikon DSLR: DX lens on an FX body
Nikon says an FX-format DSLR automatically engages DX crop mode when a DX lens is mounted, recording only the sensor’s center section. Nikon describes the crop factor as 1.5×. The exact crop behavior and resulting image dimensions depend on the camera, so check the relevant body manual. Nikon’s FX and DX format guidance and Nikon’s crop-factor explanation describe these points.

Sony E-mount: APS-C lens on a full-frame body
Sony documents supported combinations of APS-C and full-frame E-mount cameras and lenses, with cautions depending on the models and settings. On a full-frame E-mount body, APS-C/Super 35-sized capture may be selected by the user or determined automatically, depending on the camera and configuration. Sony warns that shooting may not work well when APS-C/Super 35 is set to Off. Some settings, including certain 4K recording situations, can also limit the available crop choice. Consult Sony’s compatibility guidance and the manual for the particular camera.
Sony A-mount: a system-specific caution
Sony’s guidance for APS-C capture in a cited full-frame A-mount camera context says DT lenses are still not recommended, even with APS-C capture selected. It notes that exposure may be improper for some subjects and lighting. This warning applies to that A-mount context; it should not be generalized to every Sony camera. See Sony’s APS-C capture guidance.

- F2 bright and large large aperture: The large aperture of F2 has relatively less noise in low-light environments, thereby improving image quality. In addition, the large aperture can also be used to create a beautiful bokeh.
- Large aperture increase creative fun: The maximum aperture can reach F2, which greatly enhances the degree of creative freedom-whether it is shooting in low-light environments or pursuing beautiful bokeh, the larage aperture of F2 can meet your creative needs.
- Excellent close-up funtion: The closest focusing distance is only 0.25 meters. Shooting scenes such as food, flowers, and small objects can show the details and beauty of these objects at a closer distance.
- Free to carry, multi subject gear: The equivalence of a full frame is about 37.5mm. which is close to the natural field of human eyesight, and meets the shooting needs of various subjects from daily photography to visual art creation. The compact design improves portability, making it convenient for photographers to take it with them from time to time.

What to check before using or buying a lens
- Confirm the mount and combination. Check the exact lens and camera model in the manufacturer’s compatibility information. A format label alone does not establish that the lens will physically mount or that autofocus, exposure, stabilization, electronic communication, and firmware will work as expected.
- Find out how the camera handles coverage. Check whether it automatically crops, lets you select APS-C/Super 35 capture, or permits full-sensor recording. If full-frame capture is available, an APS-C lens may leave dark corners or have poor edge coverage.
- Check the crop’s output resolution. Cropping records fewer sensor pixels than a full-sensor image. There is no universal megapixel result; it depends on the camera’s sensor and crop dimensions.
- Check for mode restrictions. Crop options can depend on camera settings, firmware, or recording format. Review the body manual and the manufacturer’s compatibility page for the exact model, especially before a shoot that depends on a particular video or still-image mode.
- Decide whether full-sensor coverage matters. If you want to use the full sensor area, consider a compatible full-frame lens for that mount. An adapter should not be assumed to solve image coverage, autofocus, or electronic-communication limitations.
When an APS-C lens makes sense on a full-frame camera
Using one can be practical when the specific combination is supported and you are comfortable with the camera’s crop and resulting resolution. It is less suitable when your work requires full-frame coverage or the maximum pixel count from the sensor. Verify the camera’s behavior rather than assuming all full-frame bodies handle smaller-format lenses alike.
