Android supports batteryless devices at the software-framework level, but that is not a promise that an ordinary Android phone will boot or run after its battery is removed. The answer depends on the exact model and its hardware and manufacturer configuration.
What “Android supports batteryless devices” means
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) documents how Android handles products designed with no internal battery. Such products are connected to an external power source, such as an AC outlet or another device’s USB port. That documentation describes how manufacturers can implement batteryless products; it does not establish a user procedure or compatibility guarantee for consumer phones. AOSP’s batteryless-device documentation, updated April 10, 2026, says the framework generally treats a batteryless product as running on external power rather than battery power.
The manufacturer’s implementation matters. On Android 9 and later, if Android does not detect a battery device, documented default battery values include present=false, status unknown, and remaining capacity 0. Manufacturers can change defaults through a kernel power-supply driver or the Health HAL. AOSP also describes product-level ways to report an AC or USB charger as online. These are engineering details for manufacturers, not settings a user can apply to bypass a phone’s battery.
Can your particular phone run without its battery?
There is no model-independent answer. The phone model is essential because both its hardware and its manufacturer’s software configuration determine whether it can start and remain operational without a battery. The AOSP documentation does not show that an unspecified consumer phone supports this use.

Before making a decision, check the exact model’s manufacturer documentation or ask its support team whether it explicitly supports operation with the internal battery absent. Distinguish that from ordinary wired or wireless charging guidance: instructions for charging a phone do not establish that it can run with its battery removed. The reviewed sources do not identify a compatible battery-bypass accessory or a universal external-power specification.
What Google says about Pixel battery removal
Google’s Pixel charging help page explains normal charging but does not provide a way to operate a Pixel without its battery. It says: “If you want to remove the battery, it’s best to take it to an authorized repair partner. We do not recommend that you take the battery out yourself.” Google Pixel Help: Charge your Pixel phone.

For the Pixel 4a specifically, Google’s safety manual says: “Don’t attempt to remove the battery. Contact Google or a Google authorized service provider to have the battery replaced.” It warns that replacement by non-qualified professionals can damage the phone, and that improper replacement or use of a non-qualified battery may create fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazards. This warning is specific to the Pixel 4a; consult the safety and repair guidance for your own model. Google Pixel 4a Safety and regulatory manual.

A phone that fails to start may have a charging problem rather than a batteryless-use capability. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the cable, power adapter, outlet, and charging port, then contacting support or arranging repair if those checks do not resolve the issue. Those steps address charging; they do not establish that a phone will work with its internal battery absent. Follow the troubleshooting process for the exact model and do not open the phone or bypass its battery circuitry based on AOSP framework documentation.
