Ask the school or district before submitting one: its ID-photo specifications, yearbook rules, AI policy, and privacy practices determine what is allowed.
Ask the school before submitting an AI portrait
Check the current student handbook, ID-photo instructions, yearbook submission guidance, and district AI policy. Then contact the ID office or yearbook adviser if the rules do not explicitly address AI-generated or AI-edited images. A portrait accepted for an ID may not necessarily be accepted for a yearbook or directory.
Ask these specific questions:
- Are AI-generated, retouched, or composite portraits accepted for this particular use?
- Must the image show the student’s current appearance? What are the required dimensions, background, clothing, and other technical specifications?
- Must the family disclose that AI was used, or provide parent or guardian permission?
- Will the image be used only for an ID, or also in a yearbook, directory, website, or vendor system?
- If a commercial AI service created or edited the image, is that service approved for student data, and can the uploaded image be deleted?
These are questions to clarify local requirements, not universal rules. The sources reviewed do not establish a countrywide approval or ban, or a universal disclosure requirement.
Why ID and yearbook rules may differ
School ID photos
An ID image has an identification purpose, so the school may require a recognizable likeness that reflects the student’s current appearance. Whether it accepts a synthetic or substantially altered portrait is a local decision; confirm the requirement rather than assuming that a polished image will qualify.

There is also a privacy distinction. The U.S. Department of Education says a photo can be an education record under FERPA when it directly relates to a student and is maintained by a school or a party acting for it. The agency identifies a photo focused on a particular student, such as an ID photo, as a factor in that assessment. This is a context-specific privacy classification, not a rule that schools must accept AI-generated images or that every photo is automatically an education record. Yearbooks and other school publications
A yearbook portrait may be governed by publication, consent, and directory-information practices as well as image specifications. For example, NYC Public Schools says photographs may be designated as directory information for school-community publications and describes notifying families and giving them an opportunity to opt out. That is NYCPS practice, not permission for AI images or a rule for other districts. NYC Public Schools’ data privacy and security policies explain its local approach.

Consider likeness, disclosure, and image handling
Truthfulness and disclosure
Ask whether the school expects the portrait to match the student’s current appearance and whether it requires disclosure of AI generation or editing. AI can alter facial features or other identifying details, so an image may not meet a current-appearance standard even if it looks realistic. The available district and agency guidance does not establish a universal standard for AI portraits.
Third-party AI tools and vendors
If an AI service receives a child’s photo, ask whether the school permits that service and what happens to the upload: who can access it, how long it is retained, whether it is used to train models, and whether it can be deleted. Do not assume a service is approved simply because it can generate a portrait.

Vendor arrangements matter too. The New York State Education Department explains that photography and yearbook vendors working under contract may perform contracted services subject to requirements for third-party contractors. That is a reason to ask how the school’s own vendor handles images, not evidence that a particular AI tool or portrait is approved. Read NYSED’s FAQs for data protection officers.

NYC Public Schools’ 2026–27 guidance describes generative AI as capable of producing text, images, audio, and other content, and cautions that output can be inaccurate or biased. Its guidance, like the ISD 761 policy, applies locally; neither creates a rule for every school. Read NYC Public Schools’ AI and screen-time guidance.
