A Thunderbolt port uses the USB-C connector and is designed to work with USB devices. A USB-C peripheral connected to it still operates according to the USB protocol and capabilities supported by the device, cable and computer; the Thunderbolt port does not turn it into a Thunderbolt device.
USB-C and Thunderbolt are different things
USB-C describes the reversible connector and cable family. It does not, by itself, tell you which data protocol a port supports, how fast it transfers data, whether it outputs video or how much power it can provide. Thunderbolt is a connectivity technology that uses the USB-C connector and can carry multiple protocols.
Intel describes Thunderbolt 4 as compatible with USB and DisplayPort standards and previous Thunderbolt generations. Its Thunderbolt overview says Thunderbolt products are designed for compatibility with USB 3 and USB 4 products. That makes a Thunderbolt port a suitable connection for many ordinary USB peripherals—but the specific functions available still depend on the computer, peripheral and cable. Intel’s Thunderbolt technology overview.
What to expect with common USB-C devices
| Device or connection | Likely result in a Thunderbolt port | Check before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse, keyboard, headset or similar USB peripheral | Usually connects and operates as a USB device. | Confirm it is a USB device and that you have the required plug or cable. |
| USB-C storage | Can connect as USB storage; it does not become Thunderbolt storage. | Check the storage protocol, cable rating and computer’s USB support. |
| USB-C monitor or video adapter | May work if the computer supports the video path the display or adapter requires. | Check host video output, monitor or adapter input, and the required resolution and refresh rate. |
| USB-C charger or device being charged | May work if the computer and device support a compatible power arrangement. | Check the port’s power-delivery support, required wattage and cable capability. |
| Thunderbolt-only accessory in a USB-C-only port | The connector may fit, but Thunderbolt operation is not established. | Verify that the computer port itself supports Thunderbolt. |
Why a USB-C device does not get Thunderbolt speed
A port’s maximum capability is not automatically the speed of every device connected to it. A regular USB peripheral communicates using the USB capability it supports, and its cable and workload can also affect performance. Connecting USB storage to a Thunderbolt port does not make it Thunderbolt storage or guarantee Thunderbolt data rates.

- The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter lets you connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices — such as external hard drives and Thunderbolt docks — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) / USB 4 ports on your Mac.
- As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra or later.
- In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays — such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) / USB 4 ports on your Mac. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter.
- Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.
Intel’s 2023 technical brief lists a 40 Gbps minimum PC bandwidth for Thunderbolt 4 and an 80 Gbps PC speed requirement for Thunderbolt 5. It also lists 120 Gbps for Thunderbolt 5 universal cables and explains that display-heavy Bandwidth Boost can allocate up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive. Those are Thunderbolt-generation figures, not promised transfer rates for a USB peripheral. The same brief lists a 15 W minimum PC port power for accessories for Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5; that is a standard-level minimum, not a guarantee that every USB-C device will charge at that wattage or that a laptop can be charged at that power. Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 technical brief.
Video and charging need separate checks
USB-C monitors and video adapters
A USB-C-shaped port does not guarantee video output. For a monitor or video adapter, confirm that the computer supports the required display output and that the monitor or adapter supports the connection you plan to use. Resolution and refresh-rate needs may also affect compatibility. If the computer lacks the required video path, the fact that its port is USB-C or Thunderbolt does not supply it.

Charging through USB-C
Charging depends on what the computer’s specific port, the device and the cable support. Check the device’s required wattage and power-delivery requirements against the computer’s port specification and the cable’s rating. Thunderbolt power requirements do not mean every connected USB-C device will charge, or that a port can provide enough power for laptop charging.

- Look for the Thunderbolt symbol next to the USB-C port. Intel cautions that not every USB-C connector is a Thunderbolt connector.
- Open the official specifications for the exact computer model and check its I/O section for Thunderbolt support and for the particular function you need: data, DisplayPort or video output, or power delivery.
- Check the peripheral’s requirements and whether it needs a particular cable or adapter. A cable that fits may not support the data, video or power capability you need.
- If a Thunderbolt connection produces an error, check for current drivers and firmware updates from the computer’s manufacturer.
Intel gives the same practical guidance in its Thunderbolt 5 guidance for gaming: look for the Thunderbolt icon or check the product’s I/O specification rather than relying on the USB-C connector shape alone.

What to do if the connection does not work as expected
- A basic USB peripheral is not detected: Confirm the peripheral and cable are USB-compatible, then check the computer manufacturer’s specifications and current driver or firmware updates.
- A USB-C monitor shows no picture: Verify that the computer port supports the required video output and that the display or adapter accepts it. Connector fit alone does not confirm video compatibility.
- A device charges slowly or not at all: Compare the device’s power requirement with the port’s power-delivery support and the cable’s capability.
- A Thunderbolt accessory fails in another USB-C port: Check whether that port supports Thunderbolt. USB-C identifies the connector, not the protocol support.
