What a Home hub lets you do
An Apple Home hub extends what you can do with compatible smart-home accessories. At home, HomePod can control HomeKit- or Matter-enabled accessories by voice. When you are away, you can use the Home app on Apple devices to control accessories. A hub also supports sharing accessory control with other people and running automations triggered by time, location, or another accessory. Apple’s HomePod guide describes these control options.

How to set up and check your HomePod hub
- Set up HomePod or HomePod mini. Apple says both models automatically become home hubs during setup. Apple’s home hub setup guide does not describe an additional HomePod activation step.
- Check the hub status. In the Home app, tap More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges. The active hub appears at the top.
- Choose a preferred hub if needed. If multiple hubs are configured, you can turn off Automatic Selection to select a preferred hub manually.
What to check if HomePod does not appear as a hub
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking setup permissions, account security, software, power, and network access:
- Make sure you are the home owner. Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to the Home app to set it up as a hub.
- Update HomePod and the related Apple devices.
- Restart the HomePod.
- Confirm HomePod is at home, powered on, and connected to your home Wi-Fi.
- Check that iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication are enabled for your Apple Account.
For Apple TV hub setup, Apple also advises checking that your name is selected as the Default User in Apple TV Settings > Users and Accounts if you cannot add the Apple TV to a room. Apple’s setup and troubleshooting instructions cover these checks.

Does HomePod support Matter and Thread?
A home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. Thread-enabled Matter accessories have an additional requirement: the hub must support Thread, or you need a supported third-party Thread border router. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled hub examples; its iPhone User Guide also lists HomePod (2nd generation). So, “HomePod works as a hub” does not establish that every HomePod model meets every Thread requirement. Check the specific accessory’s requirements against the exact hub model before buying.

HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV?
Apple lists HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hub devices. The practical choice depends on the accessories and protocols you intend to use, particularly whether a Thread-enabled Matter accessory needs a Thread-capable hub. Apple’s guidance cited here does not establish a general speed, reliability, or performance ranking among these options. Availability of HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV can also vary by region.
