Yes. Apple says you can use a higher-wattage USB-C power adapter with an iPhone. The iPhone draws power in line with its charging requirements, so a bigger wattage rating does not automatically make every model charge faster. For the fastest wired charging Apple documents, check the requirements for your exact iPhone and use a suitable cable.
What matters more than the charger’s wattage?
For fast charging, the adapter must meet the requirements Apple lists for your iPhone model. Apple supports compatible third-party USB-C adapters; where it specifies a third-party fast charger, look for USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). Apple also says third-party power adapters should comply with applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards. The cable matters too. Follow Apple’s cable recommendation for your model; for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple specifies a 60W-rated cable alongside the recommended adapter.

Apple says iPhone 8 or later can reach around 50% charge in about 30 minutes under its stated fast-charge test conditions. Its guidance lists around 50% in 20 minutes for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max when used with a 40W-or-higher adapter. These are Apple test figures, not promises for every battery, temperature, software version, or charging setup. Apple says its January 2026 iPhone 17e tests used pre-production devices, software, a USB-C charge cable, and Apple’s 20W USB-C adapter (model A2305); its July 2025 tests used pre-production iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air units with specified Apple adapters and MagSafe chargers.

Why might a high-wattage charger still charge slowly?
- Power is shared: A multiport charger may split or reallocate output when another device is connected, leaving less available to the iPhone.
- The connection limits power: Charging through a computer or USB hub can provide less power than connecting the iPhone directly to a suitable wall adapter.
- The adapter or cable does not meet the model’s requirements: A high wattage rating alone does not establish that the charger supports the required charging standard or cable configuration.
Apple says iOS 18 and later may display a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. In iOS 26, an “Incompatible Charger” message may appear when a connected charger is not charging the iPhone. Apple explains these alerts in its charging-speed guidance.
How to choose a USB-C charger for your iPhone
- Identify your iPhone model. Find it in Settings > General > About, then check Apple’s fast-charge guidance for that model.
- Check the adapter’s output and protocol. Confirm it meets the model’s stated wattage requirement and supports USB-PD where Apple specifies that for a comparable third-party adapter.
- Check the cable. Use the connector and rating Apple recommends for the model; do not assume every USB-C cable supports the same charging capability.
- Check port sharing. If you charge multiple devices at once, confirm how the adapter allocates power across its ports. For a speed check, connect the iPhone directly to the adapter.
- Choose a compliant product. Apple advises that third-party adapters meet applicable local regulations and safety standards.
A USB-C charger with more capacity than your iPhone requires is fine under Apple’s compatibility guidance, but it is not inherently the best choice. The useful match is one that meets your model’s adapter and cable requirements, supplies enough power under your actual port configuration, and complies with relevant safety rules.
