No—not for normal setup and use. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions require you to sign in to an Amazon account or create one during setup. That does not mean you need Amazon Prime: the setup guidance specifies an Amazon account, not a Prime membership.
Do you need an Amazon account to set up a Fire TV Stick?
Yes. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup guide lists an Amazon account and an internet connection among the basic requirements. During setup, you connect the Stick to Wi-Fi and sign in or create an account, either by scanning the displayed QR code or by visiting the on-screen web address and entering the activation code.
Amazon’s general Fire TV setup instructions describe the same process: connect the device, choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to an Amazon account or create one, and follow the remaining prompts. About Amazon also says users will be asked to connect the Stick to Wi-Fi and sign in or create an account in its Fire TV Stick overview, updated January 10, 2025.
Does the account requirement mean you need Prime?
No Prime membership requirement is stated in the setup instructions. An Amazon account and an Amazon Prime subscription are different things: the documented setup calls for an account, but does not say you must subscribe to Prime to complete it.

Streaming apps and services can have separate subscription requirements for particular content. The setup sources do not provide a complete list of which services or titles require payment, so check the terms of the app or service you want to use.
Will a deregistered Fire TV Stick work without an account?
Amazon Staff guidance says a Fire TV Stick works only when registered to an Amazon account. In a September 20, 2022 Amazon forum response, Amazon Staff explained that deregistering removes content associated with the account and allows the device to be registered to another Amazon account. It does not describe deregistration as an account-free operating mode.

In practical terms, deregistering separates the Stick from its current account; it is not a documented way to keep using the device without registration. If you have a model whose on-screen setup differs from these instructions, consult Amazon’s current support guidance for that model.

If you strictly do not want to create or use an Amazon account, a Fire TV Stick does not meet that requirement under Amazon’s documented normal setup process. If your concern is Prime rather than account registration, the setup sources do not require Prime; you can decide separately whether the apps and content you want require paid subscriptions.

The guidance establishes the ordinary setup requirement, not every possible flow across all models, software releases, or regions. For a particular device, follow the current instructions shown by Amazon for that model.
