Yes—according to a September 12, 2026 report, Android 16 QPR2 lets some Pixel users unlock by placing a registered finger on the under-display sensor while the display is off, without first tapping the screen or pressing the power button. The toggle is reported to be in the fingerprint settings under Security and privacy. The report does not identify compatible Pixel models or exact software builds, so availability may vary.
What screen-off fingerprint unlocking changes
Normally, a Pixel owner who wants to use the under-display fingerprint reader while the display is off may need to wake the screen first—by tapping it or pressing the power button. With the reported Android 16 QPR2 option enabled, the phone can respond to a registered finger on the sensor without that preliminary step.
Dhruv Bhutani described the behavior in Android Police on September 12, 2026, writing that users can “configure the phone to unlock from a fully dead screen.” That is the reporter’s description, not a statement from Google. The report concerns Pixel phones with under-display fingerprint sensors, but does not name supported models or builds.

Where to look for the setting
Open Settings and look under Security and privacy in the fingerprint settings for an option to allow fingerprint unlocking while the screen is off. The report identifies that general location but does not give a complete menu sequence or the toggle’s exact label, so wording and placement may differ by device.

If you do not see the option, the report does not establish why it is missing. It does not say which Pixel models or Android 16 QPR2 builds support the feature, whether it is enabled by default, or whether a device policy can hide it. Check that the phone is running the relevant software, then look again in its fingerprint settings; do not assume every Pixel will offer the toggle.

Bhutani characterized Always On Display as a battery-life tradeoff for his own use. The report provides no measured battery comparison, unlock-speed test, or security comparison for these choices, so it does not establish that the new option saves power or unlocks faster.
