Yes—many Project TinyMiniMicro (TMM) systems can run pfSense, but “TinyMiniMicro” is a class of compact computers, not one standard hardware platform. The deciding factor is whether your exact model can accept compatible wired network interfaces and has enough processing, memory, storage, and cooling for your connection and firewall features.
A Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q Tiny is a documented example of adding a multiport NIC through an expansion slot. That does not establish compatibility for every M920q configuration, other Lenovo generations, or Dell and HP mini PCs. Identify and verify the computer, riser, and NIC as a specific combination before buying parts.
Check the exact Tiny model before choosing parts
Start with the system’s full model and generation—not just its brand or the phrase “Tiny” or “Mini.” Compact business PCs differ in expansion slots, risers, brackets, internal clearance, and cooling. A part that works in one generation may not fit or function in another.
For the ThinkCentre M920q, a ServeTheHome M920/M920q guide documents an expansion path that can be used for add-on cards, including a quad-port 1GbE NIC. This is a useful example of what an M920q build can involve, not a universal parts list or a measured pfSense performance result.

Before ordering a card, confirm all of the following for your exact computer:
- The full machine model and generation, and whether it has the needed expansion capability.
- Whether the correct riser is installed or available, and its exact part number.
- Whether the NIC’s dimensions and bracket fit the chassis and riser.
- Whether the card’s chipset has suitable FreeBSD support and works with pfSense.
- Whether the installed card leaves adequate space for airflow and cooling.
A ServeTheHome Tiny reference thread illustrates why generation-specific checks matter. Contributor Parallax cautioned that there was not enough information to make broad recommendations for Gen 3 systems and that older PCIe cards, such as the Intel I350-T4, “may or may not work” with particular risers. Treat that as community guidance, not official Lenovo or Netgate certification.

Choose supported wired network interfaces
A firewall needs compatible wired interfaces for its WAN and LAN connections. Netgate recommends Intel NICs for their FreeBSD driver support and performance, while warning that other implementations can be unstable or slow even when a chipset has a driver. Its guidance says not to use USB network adapters of any make or model because of reliability and performance concerns. A USB flash drive can be used as installation media; it is not a substitute for a supported Ethernet interface.
Netgate also advises choosing adapters capable of hardware VLAN processing if you need VLANs. Check the actual NIC chipset and its FreeBSD support rather than relying only on a seller’s description, the physical connector, or the fact that a card fits the machine. Netgate’s hardware guidance points readers building their own systems to FreeBSD hardware notes for compatibility checks.

Size the system for your connection and firewall workload
For hardware not sold by Netgate, its stated minimums are a 64-bit amd64 processor, at least 1 GB RAM, at least 8 GB of storage, one or more compatible NICs, and bootable installation media. Netgate explicitly cautions that these minimum requirements are not suitable for every environment. They are a floor, not a recommendation for a high-throughput connection or a firewall running additional services. See Netgate’s minimum hardware requirements.
Size the system against the work you expect it to do, not CPU generation alone. Netgate identifies required throughput and features as the main sizing factors: CPU is often the first throughput bottleneck, and NIC quality can also affect throughput. VPN performance depends on cryptographic acceleration and the VPN choices in use. Packages that inspect or intercept traffic, such as Snort and Suricata, can raise hardware demands. Netgate says 1 GB RAM should be considered a minimum for those packages, and some configurations may need 2 GB or more in addition to memory used by the operating system, states, and other packages. Consider your expected WAN speed, inter-VLAN traffic, VPN use, and traffic inspection needs together. The cited sources do not establish a throughput figure for a particular TMM processor or NIC combination, so do not assume a system will sustain a specific rate based on its CPU model alone. You need evidence for the exact hardware and workload to make that prediction.

Netgate’s installation process uses prepared bootable media and an online installer. Before starting, prepare the installer, arrange console access to the Tiny system, and make sure its internet connection can reach Netgate’s servers. Do not trust a pfSense installation preloaded on hardware from a commercial vendor other than Netgate or an authorized partner. Netgate warns that such software may have unknown alterations and instructs users to wipe the system and reinstall using a genuine copy. Its pfSense installation documentation covers this warning. Buying or using a USB flash drive for the installer is distinct from using a USB Ethernet adapter, which Netgate does not recommend as a firewall interface.
Decide whether a Tiny build or tested firewall hardware suits you
A TMM conversion can make sense if you already own a suitable system, can verify its expansion parts and NIC, and are comfortable assembling and maintaining a hardware-specific configuration. It is less straightforward if the system lacks a compatible expansion path or if you cannot confirm driver and riser compatibility.
If you prioritize a platform tested for pfSense releases over reusing a compact PC, Netgate says its own store hardware is tested with each release and also describes purchases through authorized partners. Compare the options based on your support needs and budget; a specific Tiny combination cannot be treated as tested hardware without evidence for that exact configuration.
