Meta says Muse has safeguards, but it is a cloud-based agent that can work across connected apps, and the company says it may access service data when needed to operate Muse. Meta also says some conversations and tool-use records may train future models unless you opt out. A journalist’s report of unexpected Apple Messages data syncing raises a serious consent question, but its technical cause has not been publicly resolved. That is reason for caution—not proof that Muse routinely bypasses permissions.
Why Muse deserves more caution than a regular chatbot
Muse is designed to do more than answer questions. Meta introduced it in September 2026 as a personal AI agent that can work across connected apps, browse the web, and continue tasks in the background. It can request approval before certain sensitive actions, such as sending email or making purchases. Meta says people can choose which apps to connect, adjust access, disconnect a service, and ask Muse to forget learned information. These are company product claims, not independent test results. That range of access changes the privacy question. With a conventional chatbot, the main concern is often what you type into the conversation. An agent may also handle information available through connected accounts and tools, and it may act while you are not actively chatting. The more sensitive the account and the more autonomous the task, the more important it is to know exactly what access you granted and what data the service can reach.
What Meta says happens to your data
Where workspace data and credentials are kept
Meta says each Muse user gets a dedicated cloud virtual machine (VM) that stores workspace data and credentials for connected services. Muse can use connectors to Meta and third-party services, and Meta says it can create custom connectors for services that provide an API or command-line interface. The VM is isolated from other users, according to Meta’s technical security description. Isolation is a design claim; it does not mean that the data stays only on your device or that Meta personnel can never access it.

How Meta says it limits actions
Meta describes several safeguards: an isolated runtime container, separation of credentials, a Sentinel that evaluates proposed actions and network traffic leaving the environment, browser protections, and approval prompts for some actions. Meta also acknowledges that Muse can make mistakes and that prompt injection remains an open problem. These are descriptions from Meta, not independently verified findings about how the system performs in practice.
Training and operational access
Meta says conversations, tool calls, and handoffs between subagents—records it calls “trajectories”—may be used to train future model checkpoints after key personally identifying information is removed. Meta says users who do not want this use can opt out in Muse settings. Sanitization and an opt-out are relevant controls, but they do not mean that no conversation data is used by default.

Meta also says conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems, although Muse’s actions on the open web or on Meta services could indirectly affect ads shown elsewhere. And Meta’s security post is explicit: “It does not prevent Meta from accessing data when necessary to support, secure or operate the service.” In other words, the hosted VM is not described as inaccessible to Meta in every circumstance.
Confidential VM is a planned change, not a current guarantee
Meta announced a Muse Confidential VM intended to use cryptographic protections to prevent Meta from accessing VM contents. At the time of its announcement, Meta said the mode was being tested and externally reviewed, with a goal of introducing it later in 2026. That is a stated future goal, not evidence that the protection is available to every Muse user now.

What the Apple Messages report does—and does not—show
In a 2026 first-person account for Inc, columnist Jason Aten said Muse suggested article ideas based on conversations in Apple Messages, even though he believed he had declined access. Aten wrote, “Not only had I not asked it to do that sort of thing, I never gave it permission to read my messages.” He said Muse attributed the information to notification banners, then he found that a local Messages database was syncing to Meta’s servers. He reported seeing the sync progress through row 187,462; that is a database progress marker, not a count of messages.
Aten said he had not enabled Full Disk Access and that the app’s permission prompts were not clear enough. He also reported that Meta had not immediately answered his questions, and that Meta Superintelligence Labs CEO David Singleton replied publicly with a technical explanation that Aten understood as implying he had enabled settings needed for the behavior.
TechRadar and Tom’s Hardware also covered Aten’s account. They are coverage of the same reported incident, not independent reproductions. Tom’s Hardware noted that how Muse gained access remained unclear. The reviewed reporting does not establish the technical cause or provide a complete public incident explanation from Meta.

That distinction matters: the account raises a concrete question about whether users can understand and control the permissions they grant, but it does not show that Muse universally bypasses permissions or that every user’s messages are being accessed. Aten also noted that a language model may not know which system component supplied information, so the incident alone does not establish that the chatbot intentionally lied.
How much weight to give the privacy numbers
TechRadar reported a 2026 Surfshark comparison of Apple App Store privacy disclosures for 13 AI chatbots. It counted 31 of 35 listed data types for Muse and 33 of 35 for Meta AI. Those figures describe categories disclosed in App Store labels—not how much data a service actually collects, how often it collects it, or whether its technical controls work. How to decide whether to try Muse
If you choose to try Muse, treat it as a cloud service with access to the accounts you connect, not as a private assistant confined to your device. Start with the least access you need and avoid connecting accounts whose contents would cause serious harm if exposed or mishandled.
- Leave sensitive email, messaging, financial accounts, and work files disconnected until you understand the permission controls and are comfortable with Meta’s stated data practices.
- Review Muse’s training opt-out in settings, and check its activity history so you can see what actions it reports taking.
- Use approval prompts for consequential actions where available; an approval step reduces the chance of an unintended action but is not a guarantee against data exposure.
- Disconnect services you no longer need and use the available controls to ask Muse to forget learned information.
- Before entrusting it with high-consequence data, look for a clear explanation of the Messages incident and independent verification of the relevant permission and security behavior.
For any agent, compare the granularity of permissions, whether background work is enabled, what data is stored or used for training, whether actions require approval, what activity you can inspect or delete, and whether the provider can access hosted data. No like-for-like evidence here establishes a safer competitor, so a winner-and-loser ranking would be unjustified.
