You can use ChatGPT to explain ideas, brainstorm options, and organize questions—but don’t treat its advice as an authority. It can give incorrect answers confidently, reflect biases, or agree with a strongly framed opinion. For important decisions, check current, authoritative sources; for high-stakes medical, legal, financial, or safety matters, consult a qualified professional.

What does it mean to trust ChatGPT for advice?

Trust depends on what you’re asking and what you plan to do with the answer. ChatGPT can be a useful starting point for understanding a topic or preparing questions. It is not a substitute for checking evidence or getting professional judgment when the decision has serious consequences.

OpenAI’s Help Center puts the central reliability warning plainly: “Confidence isn’t reliability: The model may express high confidence even in incorrect answers.” A polished explanation or decisive tone is not proof that a claim is true. OpenAI Help Center: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?

When it can help

  • Explaining unfamiliar terms or summarizing a topic as a first pass.
  • Generating options to consider or questions to ask a professional.
  • Organizing your own thoughts, provided you verify factual claims before relying on them.

When not to rely on it alone

Don’t make a consequential health, legal, financial, or safety decision solely from a chatbot response. Those decisions may depend on current rules, individual circumstances, or facts the chatbot does not know. Check authoritative primary sources and involve an appropriately qualified professional.

How can bias appear in ChatGPT’s advice?

Bias is a possible pattern in responses, not proof that every answer is biased or that outputs all lean in one simple political direction. It can be influenced by training data, evaluation choices, the wording of a prompt, and the conversation’s context.

Bias can also show up as agreement rather than an obvious stereotype. OpenAI says ChatGPT may agree with a user’s strong opinion on a political issue and reinforce that belief. That possibility matters when a prompt presents one interpretation as settled or asks the model to validate a conclusion. OpenAI Help Center: Is ChatGPT biased?

Fairness and bias mitigation remain active areas of work. OpenAI’s fairness research acknowledges limitations, and its political-bias evaluation says the tests cover only a narrow slice of everyday use. NIST warns more broadly that AI systems can increase the speed and scale at which harmful biases spread. These sources describe risks and ongoing work—not a finding that any particular response is biased. How should you check advice before acting on it?

  1. Separate facts from assumptions. Ask ChatGPT to identify which parts of its answer are factual claims, which are assumptions, and what remains uncertain.
  2. Look for a competing interpretation. Ask for the strongest reasonable counterargument or an alternative explanation, especially if the first answer agrees with your framing.
  3. Request sources for factual claims. If ChatGPT has web search or deep research enabled, it may provide more current sources. Open the cited pages yourself and confirm they support the claim and are current; a citation is a lead to inspect, not proof by itself. OpenAI Help Center: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?
  4. Match verification to the stakes. For a consequential decision, use authoritative primary sources and seek qualified professional advice rather than relying on the chatbot alone.
  5. Limit sensitive details. Avoid sharing personal information that is not necessary to get a general explanation or prepare questions.

These checks can help you scrutinize an answer, but they do not guarantee that it is accurate.

What do studies say about ChatGPT’s reliability and advice?

Published studies can illuminate specific questions, but their findings need to be read in context rather than turned into a general accuracy guarantee.

A question-answering evaluation

A 2023 paper, In ChatGPT We Trust? Measuring and Characterizing the Reliability of ChatGPT, evaluated 5,695 questions across ten datasets and eight domains. Its abstract notes that system roles could affect reliability. This was a particular evaluation setup, not a measure of every kind of advice or a guarantee about current ChatGPT models, which may differ from those studied. In ChatGPT We Trust? Measuring and Characterizing the Reliability of ChatGPT.

An experiment on people taking advice

A separate 2023 paper, Taking Advice from ChatGPT, studied how participants weighed advice. In that experiment, the advisor’s identity (AI chatbot versus human expert), a written justification, and whether the advice was correct did not significantly affect advice weighting. That result concerns participants in the study’s experimental setup; it does not establish that chatbot advice is safe or correct for an individual reader. Taking Advice from ChatGPT.

For a broader framework, NIST describes trustworthy AI in terms that include validity, reliability, and fairness—qualities to assess rather than assume. NIST: Trustworthy and responsible AI.

Should you ask ChatGPT or go directly to a source or professional?

Use the stakes, need for current information, ability to verify the evidence, and dependence on personal circumstances to choose. ChatGPT can help you get oriented on a low-stakes question; as uncertainty and consequences rise, direct verification and professional judgment matter more.

Situation More suitable approach Why
Low-stakes brainstorming or learning basic terminology Use ChatGPT as a starting point It can generate options or explanations, but verify factual details you plan to rely on.
A claim that may have changed or needs evidence Open and assess authoritative, current sources A chatbot’s answer or citation alone does not show that the claim is current or supported.
A decision depending on personal context or professional judgment Consult an appropriately qualified professional A general chatbot response may not account for the facts and expertise the decision requires.
A high-stakes medical, legal, financial, or safety decision Use primary sources and qualified professional advice; do not rely on ChatGPT alone An error or missing context can have serious consequences.
