Sometimes. A storefront closing usually stops new purchases, but it does not automatically stop every game already installed from launching. What happens depends on the platform and the individual game: redownloading, updates, license checks, launchers, online servers, and offline play can all be affected separately.

What a storefront shutdown can—and cannot—mean

“The store is closed” can describe one service ending while others continue. New sales, redownloading previous purchases, updates, online multiplayer, and offline gameplay are distinct capabilities; they need not end together.

  • Installed game: The game files are on your device. That alone does not prove the game can launch without an account check, launcher, or server.
  • Redownload: If you delete the game or replace the device, getting it back depends on whether the platform still serves previous purchases.
  • Updates and add-ons: These may have different availability from the base game. A platform may keep purchased downloads available but stop offering other content, such as demos.
  • Online features: Multiplayer or other network features can end even if a game’s offline modes remain usable.

So, “I downloaded it” and “I can keep playing it indefinitely” are not equivalent. The answer for a particular title depends on its technical requirements and the platform’s current policy.

What happens on platforms with announced closures?

The official examples below show why it is important to check which service is ending, and where and when. Policies can change; the dates and availability here reflect the cited platform announcements as of October 7, 2026.

Platform or service What ends or has ended What the platform says remains available
Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop New purchases stopped in March 2023. Nintendo later ended online play and other online-communication functionality for 3DS and Wii U software on April 8, 2024. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC, plus software updates, can be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. It says non-online features and modes may still be used. Free content, including demos, is no longer downloadable. “For the foreseeable future” is not a promise of permanent hosting.
PlayStation 3 stores Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement schedules closures by territory, not on one global date: Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026; additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries in late 2026; other countries in July 2027. Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future after closure, and owned content can still be played subject to each game’s online features and service availability.

These examples do not establish a universal rule for other storefronts, regions, or games. Nintendo’s policy distinguishes prior purchases from free downloads, while Sony’s dates apply to the territories identified in its announcement. Check the platform’s current support information for your country.

Why an installed game may still need the internet

A game can be stored locally yet depend on something outside the device when it starts or runs. It might check an account or license, require an external launcher, connect to publisher servers, or require an online connection even for solo play. A failed check can prevent play despite the game files still being present.

Offline support is title-specific. Steam’s Offline Mode documentation says games requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in that mode; some games also need an initial online startup. Sony’s U.S. software EULA treats virtual content as licensed and says offline modes are not guaranteed if online services end. That agreement is specific to Sony’s U.S. terms; it should not be treated as a statement of law or as the terms for every store.

Prepare a Steam game for Offline Mode

Steam’s instructions offer a practical way to check a game’s offline behavior while the service is available. Follow these steps before you expect to be without a connection:

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
  1. Start Steam while online and make sure the game is fully updated.
  2. Launch the game while connected. Confirm it has no remaining startup requirements, such as an additional update or setup prompt.
  3. Save your account credentials so you can sign in again if needed.
  4. In Steam, choose Go Offline, then test the game in that mode.

This is preparation for Steam Offline Mode, not a guarantee that a game will remain playable if Steam itself or a third-party launcher or service disappears. Steam specifically warns that games requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in Offline Mode.

Check a specific game before relying on it

For the game and platform you care about, verify each of these separately:

  • Is the game installed now, or would you need the store to let you download it again?
  • Does it authenticate a license at launch, periodically, or after a hardware change?
  • Does it need an always-online connection, an external launcher, or publisher servers—even for solo play?
  • Does it offer an offline mode, and have you tested that mode with the device disconnected?
  • Has the platform said whether previous purchases, updates, and DLC remain available after closure? Does its statement apply to your region, and is it a continuing guarantee or only “for the foreseeable future”?
  • Are multiplayer, cloud saves, DLC, and the base game dependent on separate services?

Test offline access while you still have a connection, keep the installed game and updates on the device, and retain the information needed to recover your account. These are sensible precautions, not proof that a particular game’s license, launcher, or servers will continue working. A disc or cartridge edition may be an alternative for a specific title if it exists and is compatible with your system, but it is not a way to preserve the downloaded copy; check the title’s requirements.
