Choose the right Windows 11 update path
First decide whether you need an update for a PC already running Windows, the current Windows 11 release, or 23H2 installation media. Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page currently identifies Windows 11 2026 Update as the current release. It does not offer a 23H2 selector.

Update a PC that already has Windows 11 23H2
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and review what Windows offers for that PC. Microsoft says updates download and install automatically when automatic updates are enabled and updates are available. Installing the latest update also includes earlier updates the device missed, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 23H2 update history.
- Check your Windows edition and its servicing date below before deciding whether to remain on 23H2.
A cumulative update for an existing 23H2 installation is not the same thing as a 23H2 feature-version download or installer. Microsoft’s update documentation lists cumulative servicing for 23H2, but that does not add a 23H2 option to the public download page.
Install the current Windows 11 release on this PC
Microsoft describes the Installation Assistant as the option for installing Windows 11 on the device you are currently using. On the public download page, that means the current release displayed there—not 23H2.

- Open Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page and select the download option under Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
- Confirm that the PC is eligible. Microsoft lists a 64-bit x64 processor, Windows 10 version 2004 or later, an eligible Windows license, and 9 GB of free disk space as requirements. The assistant does not run on Arm-based PCs.
- Run the assistant as an administrator, accept the license terms, and follow its prompts. Microsoft says the PC restarts during installation.
Create Windows 11 installation media
Use the Media Creation Tool if you are reinstalling Windows or preparing a different PC. It creates media for the current release on Microsoft’s page, and supports x64 only. Microsoft directs Arm-based PC users to wait for the upgrade offer through Windows Update.
- On Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page, select Create Windows 11 Installation Media and download the Media Creation Tool.
- Run the tool as an administrator, accept the terms, choose the language, edition, and architecture, then select USB flash drive or ISO.
- For USB media, use a blank flash drive with at least 8 GB. The tool erases the selected drive, so back up its contents first. For DVD media, Microsoft specifies a blank DVD with at least 8 GB capacity and a DVD burner.
- Before installing, back up important files and confirm the target PC meets Windows 11 requirements. Microsoft warns that installing on hardware that does not meet minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues or affect update entitlement.
Windows 11 23H2 support depends on edition
Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 23H2 servicing notice gives these end-of-support dates:

For the listed edition, end of support means the end of free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes. Microsoft recommends moving to the latest Windows 11 release to stay protected and up to date. Its March 10, 2026 update documentation is an example of continued cumulative servicing for applicable 23H2 systems; it is not a public 23H2 media download.

Some Enterprise editions may be available through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, depending on an organization’s licenses, as described in Microsoft’s administrative guidance. This is a separate, license-dependent route; it does not establish consumer availability. If you need 23H2 for a managed device, ask your organization’s administrator or check its authorized Microsoft licensing portal. Avoid unofficial ISO links, and do not assume that a Microsoft account or product key guarantees access to 23H2 media.
